Are Bloggers "Starving Artists?"

Here are some truisms about “starving artists:”
  • Most artists will indeed continue to produce work throughout their lives whether or not they ever receive payment, sufficient compensation, or recognition for his or her work, simply because they want to.
  • However, most artists like to be paid for their work rather than continuing as a “starving artist.”
  • Some artists “go commercial,” attempting to combine their…

Dooce Inspired: The Case of Our Deranged Bed

I am reading Heather Armstrong’s (better known as to millions who read her personal blog) book It Sucked and Then I Cried. It’s insightful, self-deprecating and hilarious, as I expected — I love her blog. So I thought I’ll post a dooce-ish entry inspired by Heather’s writing:

So we finally set up our bed tonight. We moved into this house about a month ago, and we still were sleeping on just the box spring and mattress. (Well, mostly Don sleeps in the bed and I… Continue

Blogging Simplified

Taking action to reduce the unnecessary in my life has been my goal this week. I've written down a list of all the things I think I have to do, I think I want to do and what I think I should be doing, and methodically reviewed each one to make sure it's something I'm not wasting energy and valuable time on. Particularly the latter, because I'm time rich right now. Read more...

help, help, help!!!!

Good evening, or early morning everyone! When you get a chance, will you please stop by my blog and let me know your opinion on my items? Especially my memory boards. My husband and I are working on pricing lists for the boards and I wanted to know if anyone makes these or buys them, what do you think a fair price would be? I have an idea in mind, just need some feedback.

Also, does anyone have web-hosting for their blog or just use free sites like Blogger? I am going to register my… Continue

How to Add a Favicon to Your Blog

I decided to add a cute little favicon to my web page. As with the other HTML aspects I have added to my page it took more than a few tries to get it right. I decided it was time to write another HTML lesson to help you guys out if you've been wanting to add a favicon but didn't know how to. Having a favicon for your blog isn't just cute. It will definetly make your blog stand out among others. A lot of people don't have them and don't know how to put one on their page. This is good for us… Continue

I have a doctor's note

Dear Internet,

Please excuse Deb's less-than-prolific (and kind of sucky) posting as of late.

As this writer's physician, I also pronounce that this letter does not violate blogging commandment number 3, as there is a legitimate medical reason behind her lack of inspiring prose (and ability to wash the kitchen floor). In particular, Ms. NoReturnMom's iron level is staggeringly low. How low? Well, an adult female should expect to see an iron count around 100, in order for… Continue

The Picky Follower

I've been blogging for almost a month, and during that time I have done quite a bit of research on the components of a successful blog. Along the way I stubled across a new trend that's swept the blogosphere - "Follow me and I'll follow you."

Now in the interest of building a successful blog I'ms ure it would be much easier to just jump on the bandwagon and follow a million other bloggers and their less than average quality blogs, but that doens't sit well with me. If soemone does follow… Continue

Motherhood = Blogging

It has been a busy weekend for us. From a birthday party, groceries, homework and church and yet my kids still have their gas tanks on full. I'm trying to keep sane from all the tantrums and even my ownself. Keeping a clean house, cooking, laundry, who's turn is it on the tv, keeping order is all too much sometimes. What is the best way to relax and relief stress? Well, that is why I'm trying to blog my stress away. Like I have been noticing,so are other mothers on this site. We are writing… Continue

What is Your Mom Blogger Status?

from my blog post on Mom Spark

I’m curious. Has anyone else seen a trend in the SAME mom bloggers who are being handpicked for special events, conference panels, or incredible business opportunities? With the web overly saturated with so many fabulous mom bloggers, it seems that only a select few are being recognized over and over again. Why is this happening? This observation has me intrigued… Continue

Are Mothers Who Choose Not to Breastfeed Selfish?

While pregnant or even before, every woman inevitably thinks about the topic of breastfeeding. Will I breastfeed my baby? For how long? I think most women have the best intentions and try to breastfeed and then stop after different periods of time – they might breastfeed a week, they make it through the rough first few weeks and go on to nurse for a few months or a year, and then there are the extended breastfeeding moms like me.

I believe your breastfeeding success has everything to… Continue

How a Little Boy Named Stellan Made Me a Better Mother

I learned about Jennifer and Stellan a few days ago, and that sweet little boy has been on my mind since then. Jennifer’s beautiful blog, My Charming Kids, is actually one of the first mom blogs I ever came across seven months ago when I started my blog, but I hadn’t checked in until a tweet by another mom caught my attention. Stellan, one of four, is her nine-month-old adorable little boy who has heart failure, and Jennifer blogs about their difficult and heart-breaking journey every day. More… Continue

First Time for Everything

I was recommended MBC by a fellow blogger friend. I'm a bit overwhelmed by this site for now, as there seems to be alot going on. I'm sure I will get the hang of it when I have time to sit down and check everything out. Sometimes, I feel like I'm a blogger on the run. But I have an excuse this time... I'm on vacation visiting family.

So, first-timer here... signing out.... til next time.

How Long Did You Breastfeed? Why Did You Stop?

After my wonderful experience with it, I have become passionate about breastfeeding and would like to encourage as many moms as possible to start and continue to breastfeed — that is a major reason why I started my blog, No matter how long you choose to breastfeed — one week or four years — I want to be a resource and cheerleader for all new mothers because I believe most women can nurse their child with the… Continue

Internet Connectivity

Argh – I have been offline intermittently for the past 2 weeks. My family and I are in South Haven Michigan on Lake Michigan for several weeks. Until this summer we had only dial-up Internet, which was simply torture. Although we are on the lakefront and near a good size community, our immediate area is very rural. It takes 10 minutes off the main road onto a windy dirt road to get all the way out to us.

In years past we had no phone machine, no fax machine and minimal connectivity,… Continue

Stealing from Blogs Versus Borrowing

The other day, a friend of mine found out that someone she had done a blog makeover for went and used her code to make over someone else's blog. My friend found out when she checked in on the site she had done only to see "I just did this makeover" posted. She emailed the person and contacted the blog owner and was eventually compensated.

Once I was dropping entrecards and I noticed that one blogger had a post divulging someones contact information. The reason? He had been stealing… Continue

Tomatoes, Fish and Blogs

No, it's not a list of ingredients for a weird recipe, just a list of things I have to remember to maintain, and all of which start out with the best of intentions, ending up in a few straggly brown plants, an algae-covered tank, and a bad case of writer's block.

To explain how these odd ingredients actually do connect, I'm borrowing a line from Alan Jay Lerner, the lyricist & playwright (for My Fair Lady, Camelot, etc.). In his memoir, he wrote that he became a theatre writer… Continue
