For the past few birthdays, someone usually asks me if I want a kindle or other device to read books on. I always decline. I explain that I like my physical books and I spend too much time in my workday looking at screens. I understand that those devices are more convenient and can hold an entire library's worth of books, but I just like the feel of paper too much to give up the real deal.… Continue

We have been in the used book store for more than an hour. Since my son has started reading on his own, picking out new books has become a MUCH more serious task than it used to be. I normally let him move at his own pace in the bookstore, but it is past lunch time, and I am pretty convinced he will sit on the floor all day and read every book he can if I let him.… Continue

I recently took all my cookbooks to our used book store and traded them in for store credit. While there, I let my son choose some new books. He was super excited to go to his section and pick out whatever books he wanted (at only $2 per book, I said yes to everything he chose.) He chose some new Disney story books, a few I Can Read books and some Sesame… Continue

My son's school is having a book fair this week. Of course, we will go. I have fond memories of school book fairs when I was little, and they haven't changed much. You look through the catalog, go through the tables at the fair, buy your books and stay up late over the weekend reading them all so you could trade books with friends the next week at school.…

Book Giveaway: My Book of Counting
Added by Kristi Bernard on September 28, 2014 at 9:01pm —
A few weeks ago, my son and I went through his bookshelf. We pulled out all the books that he identified as "baby books," and ones that he didn't want to read. My little guy can read lots of words by himself now, and although he hasn't moved on to reading himself full books yet, I want his shelves to be ready for him. So, we said good-bye to the "I Love Daddy Because" or "Count to 10" books and took them to our second-hand… Continue

Like lots of families, we are purging the massive amount of toys from our household this summer. (Seriously...why does my son have so many cars?) We go through his bins, his closet and his toy trunk, and he identifies the items that he no longer wants to play with so they can go "to other children that would probably like them."… Continue

We've all heard the expression 'football widow', but have you heard of a 'technology orphan'? I use this term to describe children who do everything they can to get their parent's attention while the parent has their nose stuck in their smartphone.
I may be a grandmother of five, but do get it. I am guilty of reading a book, playing a game, or texting (or all three) on my phone while watching TV. And I see nothing wrong with occupying yourself on the phone while waiting in a line or… Continue
