Tips to Prevent Getting an Infectious Disease While on Vacation

Dr. Brent W. Laartz thought he was in for the ride of his lifetime when he set out on a horseback riding excursion in Costa Rica.

Admittedly younger and more naïve than he is today, Laartz – an infectious disease specialist and author of the book How to Avoid Contagious Diseases…

Lessons from Shadow: My Life Lessons for Boys and Girls by Shadow Bregman

What a wonderful book for children. Not only is it cleverly written by a worldly black Labrador called Shadow, of course kindly penned by his human daddy Walter Bregman, but it contains some important life lessons for children to learn, and other dogs of course as long as…

Potty Training the Stubborn Boy

Does potty training ever get easier once you start? My knee-jerk reaction is…HELL NO. However, I have only really been at it with my son, Ryder, for the last month or so, and in some ways things have gotten tremendously easier. We have tried so many times before but he just didn’t end up…

Getting rid of the term "tomboy"

My Mother put me in a dress almost every single day. (And looking back over family photos, a large number of them were plaid...) My room was done in a very flowery Laura Ashley pattern (wait - weren't all Laura Ashley patterns flowery?) and my favorite color was pink. I had lots of My Little Ponies and baby dolls and Barbies. I was sometimes referred to as a girlie-girl.…

The Joys of Potty Training

Let me just say that potty training is really annoying. I have been potty training Liam for a little over 2 months now and it has definitely had its trials of frustration. Just when I think he’s understanding how things work and stays dry for a couple days in a row, he goes and has days were all he does is pee in his undies and doesn’t want to go on the potty. I wanted to start him when he was 2, but I was just about to give birth to Reagan. I heard so many stories about kids reverting when…

Slime Time!

Glue

Pour the 1/2 cup of warm water into the glue. You can use less. This is where it gets fun to play around with the amounts and how it changes the consistency. Keep the conversation, and laughs going with the kids.

Once the water is in, you can now add the Borax solution. You can see in the picture below, it immediately starts blobbing. Colin was not all for putting his hands in…

Hard Conversations: Discussing Death with a Child

Every once in awhile something happens with us, and I’m torn about writing it. As a blogger, I don’t want my blog to necessarily come off as doom and gloom, but these things do come up. So bear with me as I get this off my chest. Perhaps it will help another parent out there.

Sunday night, Alex asked if I would snuggle with him in bed. I said fine, as the boys had Monday off from school. I’m not as strict about sleep on…

Everglades Holiday Park Experience (Home of the Gator Boys!)

I was as excited as my husband and kids, anticipating this trip. When we got to the park, everything went smoothly. We picked up our tickets and went to the covered area waiting for our ticket number to be called for the airboat tour. There were a lot of people there, but the wait for the airboat tour was only about 10 minutes.

I know from seeing…

Dessert with Rocco

http://www.thepiggytoes.com/2013/04/12/dessert-with-rocco/

During breakfast on Wednesday morning, I reminded Rocco that we had a date night.  The two of us were going out after dinner to attend, ‘Dessert with Someone Special’ at his pre-school.  Both of the boys got to choose who they wanted to take and to my surprise, Rocco chose ME and Roman chose daddy.  I say, ‘surprised’ because I really…

I Lost my Marbles

http://www.thepiggytoes.com/2013/04/11/i-lost-my-marbles/

What a morning.  You know, it’s so funny to me when people say, “Look at you!  You’re so put together!”  or “I don’t know how you always have it together!”  This whole “together” thing makes me laugh.  And then roll my eyes and shake my head.  Let me tell you, just because I did my…

5 Minute Face for Busy Mamas

http://www.thepiggytoes.com/2013/04/03/5-minute-face/

Almost every day, I run into a busy mama friend and the first thing she says to me is, “Don’t look at me, I didn’t have time to put makeup on today!”  Trust me, I’ve had my days too.  After some time though, it got me thinking.  How long does it really take us to put makeup on?  Is it that time consuming…
