I'm so outnumbered

I am now a Mom of 2 Boys!

3 Weeks ago I gave birth to our second son, William. He's already showing his family traits too, started before he came out...because he didn't want to! Stubborn as all the rest of the males in his bloodline...

William was due on December 15th, the day came and went and on the 21st I got a call to come be induced. After a very painful labor (I wanted the epi, but because of car accident, the Dr's were unable to hook me up so I felt… Continue

Teaching my son to be a man: Excuse my potty mouth

potty training for boys

This weekend me, the kids, and the boyfriend braved the crazy cold weather to watch the Little Rock Christmas Parade (after being FORCED to watch the crappy Jacksonville Christmas Parade because my daughter's band chose to partake) which is a component of our holiday tradition that we continue to maintain.

At some point near the end, my six year old, could not wait to go pee. So the boyfriend did the honorable thing and volunteered to… Continue

I Write Love Letters and Save Them

I write love letters to my sons. I save them after they’ve read them, in the back of their sock drawers. They resurface when it’s time to do laundry and get buried again when we put the clothes away.

I file away artwork. The large pieces are in a suitcase in the basement, up off the floor in case the ten-year old hot water heater decides to blow, or the plumbing explodes while we’re out of town. I’ve heard about that happening. It only happens when you’re not home.

Their… Continue

Think of it as Cultivating Talent not Ineffectual Parenting

My husband took our 9-year old clothes shopping. It seems Vincent cannot sit in his size 10 jeans anymore without the top snap popping open. I would have thought the time to shop for the next size up would have been weeks ago, when overnight all his jeans turned into capris. Judging by their purchases, it seems my husband is no better at shopping with Vincent than I am. Had I known they were going to combine their trip to the flying field with clothes shopping, I would have prepped my husband.… Continue

No Girls Allowed

I won’t say the name of this organization because then I can speak more freely, but there was a meeting last night that my son and husband attended. It was a meeting for kids. Boys only, to be specific. While I say this with complete and utter respect, compassion and understanding, women and girls have no place at these meetings. Trust me. [more HERE]

Okay, is it 3 times a charm, or 3 the magic number?

I LOVE my boys but I do not get it. I can say something to my oldest one and he will not do it until the third time...most of the time, sometimes we get to the 5th time. I find myself saying...Did you hear what I said? Did you hear me? until finally I hear, ritualistically, "Huh, I did not hear you" or "Oh, you meant now?", and my two favorites..."Oh, Me, mom?" and "Oh, I forgot" . First what is "HUH?" Is there an unspoken rule among the males or among children in general? I was taught that… Continue

HAVE SPORTS BEEN GOOD FOR YOUR CHILDREN?

When I got my second call from Brevitt’s teacher, in a three day span, I hung up the phone and had to think for a few moments. Almost ten, Brevitt is becoming a calmer and less anxious boy and is learning how to respect authority. So why was he getting into trouble? I could understand the teacher’s fear that energetic Brevitt and his pack of friends were going to be the bain of his existence for yet another year but I felt the need to tell him to give Brevitt a chance and to practice patience… Continue

Top 10 Ways to Create an Independent Son

Being a parent is one of the hardest jobs you'll ever have. While raising competent, responsible individuals capable of making sound decisions is every parents goal, creating a balance of nurture with freedom can be a difficult balance for a parent to achieve. In my opinion, being a good parent means providing a consistent framework of guidance and nurture while letting go of a little control so your child can confidently learn how to make good choices independently. Someone once told me, a… Continue

beanpoles are people too

Gals do your sons play football? If they do, I am sure can relate. As a mom it is beyond scary! Yesterday was the first day my son put on pads and began hitting and I needed a drink BIG TIME! Full… Continue

From Poop to Penis

Can someone please explain to me why boys are so obsessed with potty humor? I mean literally if I have to hear one more fart jingle I just might loose my mind. Yesterday I went to the bathroom (yes girls poop too) and found myself singing: Beans, beans, good for your heart – the more you eat the more you fart! Somebody please help me get that garbage out of my head!

I know this is probably not news to most of you, but boys find humor in the most repulsive things. It is hard being the… Continue

Finding The Right Camp for Your Kids is Sometimes Decided After they Return

I dropped both boys off at camp Sunday afternoon and an hour hasn’t gone by without me wondering how they’re doing. The last time my 13-year old went to camp, it was a disaster. We sent him to [...]

Toddlers and Gender Differences

My 2 year-old is a little like Jekyll and Hyde. One moment he’s a really nice guy to have around. He’s funny and has wonderful manners…(says “please”, “thank you”, “your welcome” and a proper “yes” (not yep) without me having to ask him to). Then in a flash, his personality can just change…into a whiny little terror. He screams at decibels higher than I ever thought the human voice could reach. We all cringe. Our moods change. Before you know it, one child is rolling his eyes in annoyance with… Continue

For the First Time

I got to see my sweet baby boy for the first time yesterday, had a 3D sonogram. I love that we now have this awesome technology. I understand what it's like to wait until they are born to see them, my other two are old enough that this was not a possibility when I was pregnant with them.

There are some special things about boys that don't happen with girls. They are taught to feel macho and tough and to not cry. More so by their dads than by their moms. In fact, we have a pink crib… Continue

Ready, Set, Pee!

Being penis challenged, I have absolutely no idea why it seems near impossible for little boys to pee only in the toilet. One would think that the target is big enough. Most toilet seats are about 1.5 feet long, and about 6 inches wide; plenty of room to adequately catch a stream of kiddie pee, right? WRONG. I find pee all over the bathroom. It’s on the floor, sprinkled on the bathtub, and don’t even get me started on the collection of pee I ALWAYS find in puddles at the base of the toilet. It… Continue

I stole this story from my sister.. it is hilarious

"Yesterday the two big boys were playing upstairs when I heard C- give a blood curdling scream, followed by M- tearing downstairs to tell me "C- told me too!" and C- showing up to scream "I DID NOT!"
M- "Oh yes he did. He said bite my butt"

Adolescence and Old Spice

My son has reached the pinnacle of his pre-adolescent career. I know this because he will no longer let me brush his hair.

Now this seems like no big deal, to anyone who has not parented a child. But to this mother, who pushed this particular nine-pound child into the world eleven years ago, it symbolizes the end of an era. I feel like I should be sending out announcements.

I mean, most children scorn their mothers when they see a hairbrush coming towards them, especially… Continue

Holiday Ideas for Teenage Son 17 years old

Every year, I have stuffed my son’s Christmas stocking with hygienic supplies that he usually would not buy for himself, or are a bit more on the luxury scale to make it a bit more special. Mainly, these are items that aren’t too pricey, but he would never buy for himself, or don’t make the day to day budget. Here is an example of what he can expect from Mama-clause thise year (and hopefully he doesn’t read this blog, but if he does, I am sure he won’t be disappointed LOL!)… Continue
