The democratic family

I often try to involve my son in our family decisions: What do you want to do this weekend?, What do you think we should do about dinner tonight? and even What do you like about this piece of furniture? are all questions that I have asked him within the past week. I ask him about what he wants to eat for lunch while grocery shopping, and I haven't been allowed to choose his clothes since he was three and started to do…

Putting the landing gear on helicopter parents

Are you a cheerleader or a coach?

When our children are little, we are their cheerleaders, praising them for their efforts to learn new skills and to try again when they don't succeed the first time.…

Parenthood: Push or Pull?

Parenthood is an aberration of insanity. In a sense, it's its own mental affliction or state of mind. It's like living with a never-ending battle between push & pull within your brain. Being faced with new challenges in every waking moment, it's like running stuck in overdrive, turning the brain into a computerized robot of sorts. Input challenge, output choice of push or a pull. Yet, as with all computers there's always the occasional viruses, glitches, & freezes. Some parents have way… Continue

5 Healthy Party Habits

November begins the start of party season for many.  Office parties, family gathering and even some formal events will offer tasty food and beverages that can knock us off our game.  Here are 5 small tips that can make a big difference in maintaining our routine but still enjoy the festivities.

1)Don’t skip breakfast – I’m guilty of this myself, thinking, I’m going to have lots of things to eat later so…

Do you like number one or number two?

I recently went for my annual eye exam. My vision is poor, even without all that blue light at night, so I try to be as good to my eyes as possible. I have a good rapport with my eye doctor; she is amazingly gentle with the battery of vision and pressure tests and she understands why I giggle during the main vision test (thanks,…

Milestones Are Not Set in Stone

Rosemary Lichtman, Ph.D. and Phyllis Goldberg, Ph.D.

If you've recently celebrated a landmark birthday, you may be thinking about the milestones in your life. Crossing from one personal decade into another is a significant event and takes on a life of its own. Connecting with friends who are also making this transition can help focus on what you've gained over the years – memories, perspective, wisdom – rather than on what you've lost – agility, some energy, your youth!…

Choices Moms Make

When I was a little girl, the majority of my friends did not come home to an empty house like I did.  They knew that their moms were waiting for them with a hug, a smile and some cookies and milk.  Their moms were there to make sure they changed out of their “school clothes” so that they could go outside and play.  And once their dads came home from work, they knew it was time to “wash up for supper” and join the family at the dining room table.  I’ll admit it; as a little girl, I…

Guilty Mom - Formaldhyde

My husband always tell me to tell it like it is so hear goes....We have 4 young children and as they are developing I realize more and more how important our choices are for them.  Not that we are always making the right ones but at least trying to get it right is better then just not doing anything.

When our first child Luke was born we were like any other parent so conscious of everything.  Is he breathing? Is he to hot/cold? Wanting him to hit every milestone 2 months ahead…

Saving money at the grocery without coupons

Gender Profiles

Yesterday, I bought my son a toy at a local consignment store. It was a little pink plastic doll house complete with little family, furniture and decorative accents. You guys, I have never seen a little boy so excited to get a surprise. He was ecstatic. Thing is though, when I checked out, the lady asked me how old my daughter is. When I replied that it was actually for my oldest son who is three, she made the awfulest face and replied that they had a boy toy’s section and asked if I had…

Motherhood and Identity

Over the past week I've been mulling over my state of affairs. No writing. Thinking. Reflecting. Considering.
I've been thinking about my day-to-day activities and long-term plans. As a stay-at-home mom, I've got a pretty good gig. I can't get fired, I don't get performance reviews (most of the time), and I get to spend time with my kids, volunteer at school and care for my…

Santa Baby: The Great (Santa) Debate

Dear Delilah,

As Christmas draws near, I'm reminded of the one parenting topic that your father and I don't quite see eye-to-eye on. Santa Claus. I know I run the risk of being labeled a scrooge here, but I'm not totally sold on 'doing the Santa thing' with you. You sure do look cute in a Santa hat, though.…

Lack of options for expectant mothers of the Central Coast?

This was originally posted on my blog at www.centralcoasttoday.com.

After having been here nearly 8 months, I am still in shock about the lack of options for expectant moms in central coast.

I have come to learn that there are a couple of hospitals, and one or two home-birth midwives in the area as far as birthing options, and THAT IS IT.

The nearest freestanding birth clinic… Continue

What to do when your kids don't want to listen???

So, my oldest daughter is getting older and with that she wants to make more decisions on her own. I have to realize that she is getting older as much as I don't want to! In one way its great because we can do more and talk about more but then you realize how fast time goes and one day she will be all grown up and on her own. Time goes by to fast. It seems like it was yesterday when it was just her and I. Now, she has friends and those baby moments are just memories. I don't want to loose one… Continue
