Holiday Stress: The Power Is In Your Hands

When I was growing up, the term holiday stress did not exist in my vocabulary. Christmas was fun, joyful, a time to see my entire family, (aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents) and of course, get presents. And back then, it was easy to be with family during the…

Holidays And Grief: Bittersweet Magical Moments

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Your tree is up and decorated. The stockings are hung over the fireplace, and your home is twinkling with Christmas magic. Holiday music fills the air, and everywhere you go people are spreading holiday cheer. This is ordinarily a joyous time meant…

Holiday Traditions: Creating Magic At Home

Holiday traditions can be a tricky thing for new families to tackle. Each person coming into a marriage with their own sentimental attachments to everything they did as a child during the holiday season. Thankfully, my husband and I grew up with pretty similar traditions, so it was never a big issue. And…

The annual gift buying extravaganza

My son struggled with his Christmas wish list to Santa this year. My husband had a theory that this was because our son has too much stuff and didn't know what to ask for. While I do not disagree with the viewpoint that our son has too much stuff, I think there was another reason that he struggled with the list:…

Family Christmas Traditions: Dickens Village

DickensVillage (cover)

I think everyone here is pretty much familiar with the 1843 story of The Christmas Carol: you know, the one about that old miser who hates everything, especially Christmas, until he is visited by four ghosts  (yes, there are four - everyone leaves out poor old Marley), who tell him if he doesn't change his ways he is pretty much going to die alone and miserable…

Our Four Gift Christmas

A few weeks ago, I wrote about our family’s plan to have a more scaled back Christmas, which meant limiting our gift-giving to a simple four gift checklist:

#1. Something they…

Family Christmas Traditions - Washington's Crossing

cover

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas! After a long and super busy week full of birthday and Christmas celebrations, I finally had a moment to sit down, go through some photos, and jot down a few thoughts.

As you can tell, our little family is BIG on traditions. Even thought I come from a terribly dysfunctional family, we had quite a few of our own and…

Family Traditions: Macy's Christmas Light Show

macy'slightshowheader

Philadelphia may not be as decadent and elegant as New York when it comes to our Christmas celebrations, but we definitely have a few things that simply cannot be found elsewhere in the nation. One of these holiday traditions is the Macy's Christmas Lights Show.

When I was a kid, Macy's was actually John…

Family Tradition: Comcast Holiday Light Show

comcastxmas-cover

Part of our Christmas Holiday traditions includes attending the light shows offered all over the city, both commercial and neighborhood run. There are few things more spectacular during the holiday season than elaborately decorated displays with beautifully strung lights, rich deep reds and greens, and the smell of pine emanating from fresh cut Christmas trees. And in addition to the highly publicized, world famous Wanamaker Light Show (now Macy's), which I will be discussing…

PRACTICAL GIFT IDEAS FOR KIDS THIS CHRISTMAS

I always like to say that I am a very practical person. Really. When it comes to receiving a gift I cherish things more that I can actually use regularly as opposed to something ornamental, fashionable, or cliche. Even growing up I much preferred things such as art supplies, or books, or sheet music or clothes as opposed to whatever toy happened to be advertised that year (except for my ALF doll, I really did want an ALF doll! Ha!). In fact, I sometimes think that my love…

I love my Christmas socks

An apology to my family: I know I am a pain to buy gifts for. Sorry about that.

But, I can say that it is probably my Mom's fault.

Baby's Second Christmas

I know it's late, but this year was Jackson's second Christmas. I can't believe how big he is getting. He is at the age that is hard to shop for. He doesn't play with the little baby toys anymore, but he is still too young for some of the other toys out there. There wasn't a huge selection for his age right now. Santa got him a wooden train set table, which he does't really know how to play with yet, he just slaps all the pieces around because he is a destructive little boy who likes noise.…
