Compulsive overeating or binge eating both fall under the general category of food addiction. Not unlike an addiction to other substances such as drugs or cigarettes, people use food as their 'drug of choice' as a way to avoid dealing with difficult emotional issues, daily stress or to fill a void within themselves.
