As is true for most people, my relationship with cycling began as a young child. I remember pedaling up and down the block in front of my house nearly every day in the summer. In the second grade, I received my…Continue
When you hear the words summer vacation, what is the one thing that comes to your mind? Water. Whether it’s traveling to the ocean, floating down a…Continue

I'm not wearing my fitbit anymore.
A few months ago, my fitbit stopped recording my data. I was alarmed and upset as I tapped away at the screen only to stare into an empty, unlit space. After a long period of time on the charger, several internet searches and a pulled apart paperclip, I got it up and…

I have a little secret: I am concerned about my son's future weight. He's not in any danger of being overweight right now, but it is an issue that I try to keep my eye on. Is he getting enough regular exercise? Eating enough healthy food? Growing the way he should? I am concerned about all these things.
Clearly, I read too many parent studies and they weigh on my…

When it comes down to it, I have two choices.
1. I could sit here on this park bench, which is in the sunshine and giving me a much-needed boost of vitamin D. And I could read my book, which I have…

Keeping our bodies healthy is an ongoing challenge and every minute it seems that new research reveals another approach to maintaining and improving our health. A few basic facts have managed to stand the test of time, however, and one of these is the impact of exercise on maintaining our bone health.
Growing up as a child in the 80's, "Got milk?" was the…Continue

I spent my entire childhood surrounded by impressive young women. I spent long bus rides with them. Laughed with them, ran with them, and cried with them. This week the gym I grew up playing in got torn down. Well, the whole school is getting torn down, but I could really care less about that. I mean, I'm happy the kids of that town are getting a new school. It was falling apart when I was there 10 years ago, definitely necessary. Yet, something about that filthy old gym getting torn down…Continue

I've just woken up my son for school. He looks at me with blurry eyes and his hair is sticking out in every direction. He even still smells like sleep; to me, he is perfection. He yawns and asks me if I ran that morning. I confirm that I did and he immediately taps my fitbit to congratulate me on all my dots.…

When I turned thirty, my world shrunk drastically. I took a road trip with my three year old from North Florida to the Appalachian mountains in my 15 year old crappy Toyota van to visit another single mom friend. We never made it to the mountains. Instead, the van’s electrical…Continue

When it comes to natural remedies for arthritis, exercise is one of the best things you can try. What can be more natural than moving your body to get fit? Many people prefer natural remedies for arthritis because they are not fond of taking medicine. There is nothing wrong with that, but…Continue

I began using My Fitness Pal last year when I started to exercise more - running, weightlifting and the such. It began as a way to monitor mostly my carb intake but U used it to keep track of all of the food I was eating, water I was drinking, as well as monitor my calorie intake and compare it to the approximate number of calories I was burning throughout the day. You…

To eat and exercise right will benefit the rest of your day. Mornings begin by turning a light on. And what I do for the rest of the day can keep the light on or burn it out. Giving my morning a generous head start keeps my energy and attitude more positive for the rest of the day. I’m a morning person, but a LATE-morning person. I don’t do wondrous things first thing.
After I wake up, I make a sleepy, quiet trek across the house to the kitchen to start breakfast. I stay in my sleepy…Continue

Last weekend’s blizzard was a time of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and self-reflection. Social media provides us with beautiful pictures, exercise demonstrations, inspirational sayings to motivate us to get our sweat on in our baddest, beast mode each and every day.
This weekend I enjoyed posting away while…Continue

I have tried standing more during the day. Because I once read that sitting too much was bad for my health. I tried standing more at home, at work and when I went outside to play with my son. I stood. But, it turns out that I didn't need to.
Another study has just declared that…
Sometimes when my son and I are doing errands on the weekend, he complains that he is tired and needs to sit. I ask him why - especially if he has only been standing for a few minutes - but then I remember that he is in school now and he has become used to sitting all day.…Continue

I still hate running.
I have my good days and my bad days; I have times when I am not getting out of the bed in the morning to run and those times when I am able to convince myself to run because it is the right thing to do. It is a daily struggle. But I try (oh so very hard) to stick with…
A few months ago, a couple of coworkers were trying to figure out my age. Eventually, one of them just came out and asked me. Several of them thought I was significantly younger than I actually am. I know this is not because of the way I look (I think I look my age), but rather because of the energy level that I have.…Continue

All mothers know there are two definitions of the phrase "baby fat." The first definition describes the extra roll of fat that clings to babies and is absolutely adorable. The second definition refers to those extra pounds that cling to a woman's body after she has the baby (and is considered much less adorable). Mothers usually blame their baby for their weight gain, and then try their luck at getting rid of it.…Continue

OK, OK, I know you've "read it all before" when it comes to me posting about going to workout, or going to follow a plan, but by George I think I've finally got it! A few days…
