I envy people who can play seven unrelated instruments while singing the words to any song, know their way around O’Hare the first time landing there and make their connection just in time, cook and entertain simultaneously (it’s not as easy as it seems), negotiate a deal on a house for tens of thousands off the asking price and get the house even though they weren’t the highest bidder, or land the job even though they weren’t the most qualified but could fake the jobspeak the… Continue

Many parents view their children’s excess weight as an aesthetic issue. They worry their kids won’t be liked in school, won’t be picked in gym, and won’t be pursued by members of the opposite sex. According to the American Institute of Cancer Research, parents have a lot more than looks to be concerned about. New research shows that about 100,500 new cases of cancer are caused by obesity each year.
Obesity is known to cause many deleterious health effects but this study is one of the… Continue

Last month, a colleague approached me about exploring the role of acupuncture in weight loss. As a traditional Western medicine physician, I was skeptical about its merits. While many of my patients have used herbs and other holistic treatments, I have never been a believer. But, since I am willing to do anything to help my patients, I decided to use myself as a guinea pig to see if acupuncture was something I should be recommending.
First, I did some research. I wanted to know the… Continue

Our worst fears have finally come true. Overweight teens are dying from heart disease. Pediatricians have long feared that the rising number of severely obese children and teens would soon start to suffer from adult complications of obesity, like heart attacks, strokes, and death. And now it is happening.
According to the St. Louis County medical examiner, a 13-year old football player who collapsed during football practice died as a direct result of “hypertensive cardiovascular… Continue

I hate to admit this, but I'm feeling guilty so I'd better share it with the world (or my few followers). I skipped my workout today. There it is. I said it. Let everyone know I am a lazy slob. How did I get to this foreign place of feeling anxiety over a missed workout? It was a long road, I tell you. A long, sweaty, arm-pitty road.

This is not a fairytale. This is how I finally figured out how to get my extra baby weight off, get toned up, get organized, and clean my house, in the most “fantabulously” insane way.
My friends have been dying for me to share my plan… so here it is…and for those of you who don’t know me YET… here is a little about me.
I am a stay-at-home/go-to-work mommy to Sophie (6) and Jack (2). Just like you, I carpool. I homework. I run a hundred errands a day. I cook. I clean. And,… Continue

This is the number one issue that I hear from moms in particular. You might think that you don't have time to workout and eat property, but you CAN find the time. Frankly, you MUST find the time for yourself! If you are not healthy and fit, your family can't count on you. Your work productivity will decrease, and you won't feel good about… Continue

Be aware of what and how much you eat. This simple concept will save you from hundreds upon hundreds of calories each week.
To apply this rule, don't eat while your attention is distracted by another activity. Only put food in your mouth when you are hungry and conscious of it. This means turn off the T.V., get out of your car, and no matter what you… Continue

Healthy Birthday Snack Ideas:
A child’s school birthday celebration should be centered around the child; instead, it has become centered around cupcakes. Parents bring in these unhealthy treats and kids rejoice. Yet with the current child obesity crisis, many are rethinking this caloric tradition. In response, I have created this list of healthy birthday school celebrations. Enjoy them! And please, let me know if you have any additional suggestions.

The Cupcake Wars: As Seen in the NY Times (Plus More!)
Last week, there was an article in the NY Times about Meme Roth and her fight with her children’s school concerning school birthday parties and cupcakes.
What sets her off is the junk food served on special occasions: the cupcakes that come out for every birthday, the doughnuts her children were once given in gym, the sugary “Fun-Dip” packets that some parent provided the whole class on Valentine’s Day.
“I thought… Continue

Monday is here again! Time to look back on the week and see how we've done, along with set new goals for the week ahead! I started running with Lucas last week and I'm loving it. We have some nice trails (smooth paths, really) around here and the weather has been so perfect. I also lost a pound, and I'm happy to say that I've lost all my baby weight! It's funny how your body really does change after having kids. I can say that I'm back to where I was weight wise pre-pregnancy, but I definately… Continue

I woke up this morning, itching to move. I’ve been working so hard this week and didn’t work out. I started to write that I didn’t have time to work out but that’s not really true. Anybody can squeeze in a quick workout if she really wants to. It’s just a lame excuse. Even with everything I have going on, I… Continue

This is probably one of the top questions for anyone embarking on a new diet and fitness plan. Follow these simple instructions to determine the approximate number of calories you should be eating to lose weight. To lose a pound a week, you must create a 3,500-calorie deficit, or burn 500 calories per day more than you eat. Here is an example of how a 150-pound personal would achieve that:
Add a zero to your body weight (150 + 0) =… Continue
