Star Wars

Hello, dear ones! I’m so excited to share this post with you. I will admit that I was never a fan of the original Star Wars movies. My husband and eldest son love them. I really enjoyed the new Star Wars movie, though.…

Hello, dear ones! Please join me for a word study on motherhood. Even if you are not a mother, you can use what you learn in other relationships. Love Letter To My Sis-in-Law About To Have Baby #5

Dear Amazing Mom, Beautiful Sis, Faithful Friend, Devoted Wife to My Brother & Loving Aunt to My Kiddos,

Can I be you when I grow up?

Sure, I’ve got you by eleven years and your current four children are age 7 and under, while my three are 18 and over.

So what?

Age and family dynamic are relative. We’re all “growing up” each day. The journey of life is timeless. Wisdom merely represents a singular point on a static spectrum.

Moms out there need to…

Please go home, Mom

Sometimes, I work late.

It's not intentional, but things happen, and I work a little later than I originally intended to. It's not frequent, as I am a huge advocate of the work/life balance for my employees, and I believe in setting a good role model for them and showing them that I don't work late (at least…

A phone-free dinner table

It's really hard to follow our own technology rules. We know that. I, for one, would consider it a win to have a phone-free dinner table. Maybe I could use a little help.…

Increasing Trend In Women Giving Up Breastfeeding Early

There has been a radical drop in exclusive breastfeeding in the last few decades. Out of the 90% mothers who initially opt for exclusive breast feeding, only few manage to successfully breastfeed their babies.

Some of the major factors influencing this dreaded drop are fear of insufficient milk…

Who do you think is lonely?

Pause for a moment to take stock of your family and friends. Do you think that anyone you know is lonely? Did you know that you are probably right?

Social isolation isn't good for us - numerous studies have shown that…

How (not) to Write a PhD and be a (not so) Amazing Mama.

How (not) To Write A PhD

When I am feeling my most discouraged and whipped by this PhD I tend to start listing mentally, everything that has happened in my life over the past 2.5 years that have made it impossible for me to “properly” get this thing done. Pathetic, I know- but somehow I think it is kind of a common “poor, poor, pitiful me” thing to do. But, I got to thinking a few days ago that, funnily enough, when I am feeling particularly buoyed and optimistic about getting this…

Getting Started With Cloth Sanitary Towels

Cloth nappies have been becoming more popular lately, but cloth sanitary towels?

I regularly saw them advertised and reviewed in Juno and Green Parent magazine, but I never put much thought into trying them for myself. I don't know why this was, maybe I was suspicious that…

10 Things For the Childless StepParent

When you marry someone with a child, you are getting a packaged deal.  You are not only getting a husband or a wife, but a child.  That comes with a whole new set of rules.  A whole new set of responsibilities.  I just wanted to take the opportunity to address some of the things that kind of slapped me upside the head once I said “I Do” to someones’ dad. Read More…

Life Brothers

Sometimes you find a friend that sticks around for 5 minutes.  Sometimes you find a friend that will tell you they have your back until you realize they’re the one that stabbed you.  Not often enough in life we find that one friend.  That one that no matter how much time or distance life has put between the two of you, they still manage to be there when you need them the most.…

Do I have to eat this?

At the beginning of every month, I plan out all the meals that we are going to eat. For the whole month. I do this for a few reasons (meal planning, to ensure we aren't getting repetitive with our dinners, and to allow myself a few nights off from cooking each week). And I am painfully aware that as I plan out the meals there will be a number of dinners my son will not want to eat. Chicken tikka masala? No way. Pulled pork sandwiches? Not…

It's March!

Hey ya'll!  For the next few weeks I'm going to take a little break from the whole step mother and depressing topics.  I kinda bummed myself out a little.  I've got to throw some excitement in here every once in  awhile!

March is probably the best month there is!  What normal person has a favorite month?  Well everyone if they choose their birth month.  March just happens to be my birth month.  Along with my mother's as well.  I think that's the reason we don't see eye to eye on…

A FEW THOUGHTS ON TWO

It’s hard to believe our twins are already two. I have been eagerly watching them grow and hit developmental milestones, yet the graduation from baby to toddler is paired with feelings of sadness and worry. My babies are grown and it’s happening fast. Just as it did with Thomas. Days…

Let Them Be Little

Kids grow up fast, real fast. One moment they are sitting in the back of the car singing the ABCs, then next moment they are singing ‘hot line bling’. If you think about it, childhood is just small portion of life, not even 10%…I’m not sure who decided that childhood should be so short, but whoever made the decision, they totally got things backwards.

As parents, we want to raise our children to be functioning members of society. We want them to be good people, to know right from…

Family Traditions: Happy Birthday George Washington

washingtonbdaybanner

This past weekend we visited one of our favorite historical parks, Washington's Crossing, to celebrate General George Washington's 284th birthday. This is the second year we visited the park for the event and, luckily, it wasn't 18 degrees with snow and ice covered grounds this time around (although the snow did make… Continue

How to Get Your Kids to the Dentist Without Tears, Tantrums or Throwing

Growing up, you might remember a time in your life when the only thing scarier than the boogeyman was your dentist. Over the years, you grew to appreciate your dentist and his or her service to your dental health, however, it did take you some time to grow into that mentality. Give your kids a…
