Establish a Bed Time Routine for Your Child and Calm Their Fears With Monster Defense Spray

Over the last several weeks, I have noticed that my youngest son doesn’t like to go to bed at night.  I am not sure if he is scared of the dark, terrified to be alone, dealing with separation anxiety, if he is just going through a phase where he wants to be independent, or he is afraid of “monsters” hiding under his bed or in his closet.   Every night we go through the same exact routine, my youngest son will throw a fit and he will tell me that he doesn’t want to go to bed.  Each night we…

My son is afriad of heights and I am sure it is my fault

My son is afraid of heights, and until very recently, I thought he developed this fear from a fall at some point. Granted, my husband and I couldn't think of any time when our son had a serious fall (the short fall out of his bed those few times notwithstanding).

It turns out that it's probably my fault. I have a specific fear of heights. It's weird because I'm not afraid…

New Santa: Same Old Fears

I cannot be the only one…who has noticed how much better the “mall” Santa's are looking lately, gone are the days of red polyester suits, cotton masquerading as fur, and those weird shiny angel hair beards, the current Santa’s are bringing it.  Although, even with Santa's modern make-over, the kids standing in the crowded lines, between the red crushed velvet ropes, have the same terror in their eyes I remember from my time as a kid waiting to step up to Santa's…

Freaky Furby

You know how you had that one toy in your bedroom as a kid that kinda creeped you out once your parents turned out the lights and tucked you in for the night?  Mine was a clown who I swear glared at me from his perch high up on my bookcase.  (Special thanks to Poltergeist for that little childhood fear.)  But now that I'm an adult (allegedly anyway), my daughter has…

This Mama is Walking a Catwalk - Read On!

I’m walking the runway March 14 to help introduce VAWK’s new sister line VAWKIN (designed by Project Runway Canada season two winner Sunny Fong)!

How amazingly AWESOME is that?!

Seriously. I am not a model. I’m a 30-something mom and entrepreneur. I clean snotty noses and poopy diapers. I read books about talking squirrels and grumpy birds. I drive a family car with a car seat. I sit behind a computer all day. I write. I drink coffee. I eat cake…You WON’T normally find me…

Facing My Fears in Pregnancy

I have this repeated dream that I am lying strapped down to an operating table, people are moving quickly around me but ignoring my cries of pain. I pass out and its the end of me. The next thing I know I'm looking at myself from above the operating table. I'm gone and my husband is crying. Then I wake up and realize I should be laying in a different position or I should prob myself up a little more and my sciatica pain goes away at least for 10 to 15…

J is Afraid Of His Room...

I remember as a child lying in my room with my covers up to my chin, just staring around at the darkness. I was afraid of the dark for a long long time. Not sure what prompted the monsters in the dark fear, but it was there and still to this day, if I watch a scary movie, my mind moves to the worst possible scenario when I'm turning out the lights for the night.

My son, two, hasn't ever been afraid of anything. Not a lot of toddlers are unless something tells them to be afraid. Many… Continue

Fear and Beyond

Last week I called the instructor at the local Ropes Course. We were set to attend with our homeschool group in a few days, and I realized that although it may be interesting to watch the older kids climb, zip and whirl, it'd be more fun if my two oldest could participate fully.

The answer I got: The harnesses can be fit on very young children. It's more about their personal will and interest.

So, we woke early a few days later, tossed our picnic in the car, and drove as…

One Blind Housewife

Is my 2yo headed to therapy?

Recently my youngest has developed a phobia, to bugs, bumble bees specifically. I know what your thinking, what’s wrong with being afraid of bees, most people are. That’s fine and I think it’s sound advice to encourage kids to stay away from bees if they see them. Is this a stage or a sign that I should be looking for a good therapist? What do you think?…
