Boy, the times have surely changed!

Yesterday, I found myself reminiscing. I was thinking about and appreciating my childhood, old friends and every experience good or bad. I remember going outside to play with my friends. We all had Nintendo and Sega Genesis systems, but those were only played when we had company come over who didn't have their own systems...or we had to be indoors. It wasn't as addictive as games seem to be now…

What Have These Brave Kids Got to Lose?

I am a huge fan of The Biggest Loser TV show.  To me, it’s not just about a group of people losing a large amount of weight and competing for a prize.  It’s about so much more than that.

I am overjoyed that the group behind this show has finally decided to take on the matter of child obesity.  It’s a sensitive subject and, so far, they have handled it beautifully.

Our children watch our every move.  We are responsible for the food we bring into the home, how many times we allow…

Rascal Likes to Play Video Games Too

Rascal came down from the chandelier after the kids went to bed.  He said that he was ready to go for his nightly visit with Santa Claus.  I don’t know why he was in such a hurry to run off, but it must have been very important to Rascal.

Hopefully, he wasn’t off to the North Pole in search of more sweets, this seems to be his favorite thing to eat.  He must have been out pretty late again last night, because he was sneaking back in just as I was coming out of our bedroom to go wake…

Sudoku, My New Hobby

Since the day I am "addicted" to Sudoku, I have downloaded the free games in my "not-so-smart" handphone... at least now I know how to pass time without feeling bored, "impatient", stressful, distracting me from all these anxieties... hahaha...

How addicted am I?  Well... morning and evening "business" allows me to use my brain for at least 15 minutes and I don't smell anything "stenchy" when my grey cells are at work!  hahahaa... Gross?…

Things I've Learned This Week

** All I want for Christmas is a personal chef.  And a bigger bank account to pay for the personal chef.

** Those inflatable lawn Santas look so sad and hungover during the daytime.

** A sick kid at home makes for an incredibly unproductive week.

** I've eaten so many damn holiday cookies that you should probably start calling me…

Video Games: Time Wasters or Career Path Makers?

This morning I was taking my kids plus a friend's child to school and I overheard the friend say this from the backseat:

Friend: In Super Mario Party 8 Luigi wins by doing absolutely nothing!

Finally! A game I could actually be good at.

When I was very young I had dreams of being a medical doctor, more specifically, a general surgeon. And then I had a revelation (thanks to Atari) about how truly horrible my eye-hand coordination…

iPhone Overload

My kids are driving me absolutely CUCKOO-KACHOO with all the friggin' apps they continue to want for the iPhone.  Every day it's something new.  My damn phone now has over 8,764 different games on it!  WTF?!  Ok, so maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but I seriously can't find any of the things that I need on it anymore cause it's so overcrowded with kid…

When technology Takes Over Kids

How do you know when your kids are becoming too attached to their technology?  One mom knew when she asked her son to turn off his Xbox game and instead of turning it off, he shoved her.

Being pushed was a big red flag for her since he was…

Things I've Learned This Week

** Once again, I have no desire to go out and get all crazy on New Year's Eve.  (I'd rather do it the night BEFORE New Year's Eve.)

** Christmas cookies seriously kicked my ass this year.

** Trying to write with a house full of people is like trying to have sex with a house full of people (uh....not that I would know or…

How to use a map? Activities for kids & parents that don't cost anything.

This is so, so important. I can’t stress enough what a vital skill this is.

I know that you may think now: ‘We’re not going to need that with all the GPS & iPhones & smartphones with satellite navigation systems.’

Well, just imagine you are in a place where there is no cell reception (yes, there are places like that on this planet), your battery is dead, you lost your device, etc. Once again, reading maps is an essential skill. And, after all, all these apps on the…

Chess Is So Much For Than A Game

Life is so interesting in so many ways. The history of chess is fascinating. The game of chess is one of those surprising tools that parents and educators are discovering around the world. In its earliest forms chess was played in India during the 6th Century. It spread and developed throughout the world from the Middle East and to Europe. It became part of the education of the Persian nobility. It reached Europe through Persia, the Byzantine Empire and Arabian…

Grandchildren, BINGO and Alzheimer's Disease

I think that one of the saddest things about Alzheimer's disease is the fact that it often robs children of their grandma or grandpa. Children are very astute. They know that grandma or grandpa is there "physically", but they can usually sense that they are not fully "present".

Little ones might be frightened. Tweens might get very quiet, and teens? They might just get angry. So how…

Three Things That Made My Day Less than Stellar

I'm a list girl.  Always have been.  Always will be.

I like a chore list.  I like the focus it gives me during the day and I love, love, love being able to cross things off my list as the day goes on.

I live by a grocery list.  I don't understand how people can go to the grocery store without one.  Unless you have a list in your head of the 3 to 5 things you need, but then again, that's a list.  A mental list?  Yes.  But a list, nonetheless.  Walking through the aisles…
