Whenever I used to ask my mother what she wanted for a birthday or Christmas, she would always answer the same thing: "Nothing." If pressed, she would tell me that all she wanted was for us to be happy.
It's the sort of non-answer that a lot of Moms give. Yes, parents want their children to be happy,…

Some years ago, the city of Chicago adopted me.
I grew up in a place where I could see the World Trade Centers from my attic, where Puerto Rican cabbies spoke Yiddish, and where everyone thought Philadelphia was in the Midwest.
But when I moved to Chicago the day after my honeymoon, Sandburg’s “stormy, husky, brawling” city welcomed me with broad shoulders and open arms, and I fell in love with my adoptive city. Put celery salt on my Vienna Beef, make my pizza like a cheese…Continue

While being happy is objective and different things will work for everyone, I wanted to take a few moments to give you some ideas of things to do (or not do!) to live a little bit happier life.
1. Be honest. If you want something, say something. Don’t expect others to know what you desire or need. Be firm, but honest. People love to help others. Ask for what you want.
2. Do nothing. Take some time every day to do nothing. If you are constantly thinking about other…Continue

Wow, I can’t believe it has been two years since I was impatiently awaiting for you to arrive. I remember when I was on my way to my final doctors appointment, I didn’t know that it would be my final visit as a pregnant mom. I had a previous history of low amniotic fluid during my previous pregnancy and she order the ultrasound to ensure that I still had enough fluid…Continue

I remember when I was pregnant with my very first baby in 1996 and on Mother’s Day that year, it dawned on me that I was going to be a mom later than year. I was excited, scared, and nervous at the same time. If you are a mom, I am sure that you can relate to all of those feelings. It is scary to think that you will be responsible for a tiny human being and that you have…Continue

So how many times have you made a deal with your kids, like "if you do ____ for ____ days, you can have a ____"? And you make the deal knowing very well that your kid would never do ____ for ___ days straight? Well, I made one of those deals, and I had to pay up, and I've never been happier.
You see, having a child like B, the whole reward system never,…

Let me just start by saying, whoever thought that taking a road trip when your 8 months pregnant… wait, no. I should really start by saying how sweet it was that my hubby took the time to plan a little family getaway after the holidays. In all honesty, it was an awesome idea; one I would normally love if I weren’t 8 months pregnant with a God awful back problem. I knew this would be quite an adventure as it was, taking 2 toddlers and a psycho dog to the mountains. Now…Continue

Serene Sunday - for me, serenity can be found in a slice of carrot cake.
Each Sunday throughout the month of September I will be exploring ways to find serenity in one hour or less. I have found that many times the time spent in serenity is sometimes short. This means the trick is to find something that…Continue

I want to share this story because it is true and I think it is a beautiful story on many levels. It also helps to explain another reason why your small gifts or moments of kindness can be so meaningful.
I was still undergoing chemo, but with my family’s blessing, I…

Ah, mothers… Whoever your mother figure might be, she certainly deserves to be celebrated. This is the woman that gave guidance, has always been there and that, today, loves you unconditionally. Mother’s Day is a day to show appreciation to the woman who helped make us who we are today.
We have invited a select group of companies to sponsor this Mother’s Day gift guide. They offer an array of sweet and…

I am totally hyped to say that my Thanksgiving was awesome. I spent it with the people I love, it was quiet and peaceful, and the food was amazing. Way to go, Mom, by the way! I skipped Black Friday because besides being broke beyond belief, I wanted to just lay around with my babies. And that is exactly what we did. My children enjoyed a 5 hour Power Rangers marathon, again, which I ain't gonna lie, I did…Continue

So we just finalized out Bankruptcy. It many ways it is a closing of a very hard chapter for Ian and I. I don’t imagine so many couples would be trilled for their bankruptcy, as much as we are. We had about 200k, all of which was medical debt.
Over the past 10 years, we have spent 7 of them without insurance. In those 10 years we have survive 3 layoffs, two evictions, and we moved about 6 times in 5 years. And that is only the been the financial set backs.
