I'm teaching you to become an adult

A friend of mine told me (semi-jokingly) where it all went wrong. He said he gave his son a great childhood and they became buddies during his son's teenage years. He said that this is the reason why now - when his son is in his 20s - my friend can't get him to leave the nest. My friend doesn't blame his son: Why would anyone want to trade in a cushy life in a happy home for many poor years in a crappy job and a small…

Working Moms: End of Summer

I’ve been trying to find time to sit down and write my “end of summer” post, but when you’re a working mom AND a student… it’s almost impossible.

When you’re a working mom, summers don’t have as much impact as when you were a kid. The…

Knowing there are things you are doing or doing wrong inside and outside your home that can hurt you or your family is a scary thought. Most of the examples below will be rationalized to seem like the type of accidents that befall "other families", but it can happen to anyone if…

3 Things to Fix Around The House Before They Get Worse

A family home is a massive and complex machine. From stubborn windows, to uncleanable ovens, to attics that refuse to clear themselves out, it’s a miracle that your house remains operational. But without a little attention here and there, things can get out of hand – and ultimately more expensive to deal with.

A sagging gate that won’t close

Gravity takes its toll on garden gates over the years, and eventually the business-end…

A First Time Homebuyer's Guide to Visiting a Potential House

Buying a house isn’t something they teach you about in school, it’s something you have to figure out for yourself – which is why sharing wisdom about the process can be so valuable.

There are many things to think about when you go to check out an intriguing place, and they aren’t all 100% intuitive. Knowing the right things to look for and the right questions to ask requires a little preparation up front.

For example, you might look past a messy owner’s failure to…

Embracing your inner slob

I like a neat house. I am not the type of person who cannot sleep if the house is messy, but I will make sure to give it a thorough clean on the weekend when I can devote some real time to doing so. When my home is clean, I feel more calm and rested in it.…

Keep off my (very small) lawn

My son does not like the backyard in our new house.

In our old house, there was a big backyard that was mostly flat and it was perfect for water battles and running around. In the new house, the backyard mostly consists of a hill (that will be great for sledding on), but we definitely can't have water…

Parenting Standards… Lowered. | Anna Lane on MomCave LIVE

Dear Parents I Used to Nanny For,

Twenty years, twenty pounds, and a marriage and two kids ago, I was your nanny. And I judged you. My parenting standards were based on unrealistic expectations. I knew nothing of the shit storm that is parenting. While I made bewildered mental notes about the state of your home, the behavior of your children, and your fashion choices, you were keeping actual human beings alive. I apologize.

I have seen the light. And so has Anna Lane, who…

Favorite Make-Ahead Meals

For once, our freezer is stocked. I still feel like it's not enough, but I have no room for anymore stuff, so I guess it will have to do! I've been making a few extra meals each week for the last few weeks to stock up on meals for when the baby comes. I've learned that anytime I make a casserole, to just make two of them and freeze the other one. It really doesn't take anymore time and saves me from cooking a meal on another day. It's so handy that I will continue to do it from now on to…

Looking for room(s) to spare

Sometimes I ask my son about the house he would like to live in one day. He tells me that he wants a big backyard with a fence to keep him safe (that's my guy!), lots of good sidewalks for riding bikes, a slide instead of a stairway (don't ask) and three rooms just for him.…
