A friend of mine once told me that she has several large tote bins in her basement filled with all of her daughters' school work. At first I thought she was kidding, but she said that she had saved everything that the girls had done, because they didn't want their work tossed out.…Continue

Dear Parents I Used to Nanny For,
Twenty years, twenty pounds, and a marriage and two kids ago, I was your nanny. And I judged you. My parenting standards were based on unrealistic expectations. I knew nothing of the shit storm that is parenting. While I made bewildered mental notes about the state of your home, the behavior of your children, and your fashion choices, you were keeping actual human beings alive. I apologize.
I have seen the light. And so has Anna Lane, who…Continue

I've spent the last week cleaning and clearing out things from both my home and my storage. Inspired by a book I read about "tidying up" and how we cling to things we don't need for reasons hard to explain, but possible to overcome, I set out to create a home environment in which I wasn't constantly having to clean clutter every single day.
The book is a…Continue

I have always wanted a mesh screen. I came close to purchasing one last year, but a friend of mine owns a few and always complained about how flimsy they were and that it didn't have an opening in the middle, so having to push it to the side to get through worked against keeping all bugs out. I was happy when a chance to try the Magnetic Screen Door came. Getting one that's supposedly the "#1 Best Screen" FREE? That's a…Continue

Yesterday I didn’t get the opportunity to write a new blog post. My baby normally goes to daycare during the day because it is hard for me to care for him by myself due to my current medical problems. Tuesday late afternoon I got the dreaded call from the daycare that my baby boy was running a fever and…Continue

A few weeks ago, my husband asked me if I needed anything from the store. I asked him if he would pick up my youngest son a coloring book because he kept grabbing my pen from me when I wasn’t watching and kept telling me that he wanted to draw. I took the pen away from him and he was devastated, even though…Continue

Hi Moms, I want to talk about loyalty vs. blind loyalty in families.
Loyalty is essential for genuine family solidarity. But blind loyalty leads to family dysfunction.
A loyal family member is faithful to the family's traditions and honors its obligations. A loyal family member is emotionally present with support and encouragement during success or duress. These unwavering devotions are admirable and observable: just look at how a loyal family member helps another member…

It's frustrating being sick. If you can't sleep but have to rest what do you do? For the first few hours it may be fun but after that it is just boring. How do we keep the mind busy while the body rests?
For a lucky few this isn't a problem. They are able to sleep and heal. Sleep is a struggle for many of the rest of us though and those hours in bed or on the couch get very long.
Whether you are a child or an adult there are lots of options though. Some you may not be…Continue
