Lying to our sons

There are the lies that I intentionally tell my son: The tooth fairy, Santa, that dinosaurs come alive at night. And then there are the lies that I don't mean to tell my son, like that I will be home from work on time.…

What Can I Do To Keep My Child or Teenager from Lying to Me Constantly?

Teenagers begin exerting their own voices and want to begin making their own choices.  Their choices may not be the choice that you agree with and they may cover up their actions to avoid getting caught.  If they are caught, they may attempt to cover up what they did and begin telling their parents a stream…

Why Do Older Children and Teens Lie to Their Parents?

Parents it is very important that you have a continuous relationship with their child as they are growing up so that when your child becomes a teenager, you will know them well enough to determine when they aren’t telling you the truth.  Kids will tell you a story if they think that they can get away with it.…

Q&A Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire

I have a very imaginative 8 year old boy who lies all the time. Sometimes it’s to get himself out of trouble, sometimes it’s just to add to the conversation as an “expert”.  How do I channel his imagination and need to be part of discussions in a positive way?

Imagination or no imagination, everyone lies at some point and the reasons for doing so are consistent.  Either we are trying to protect…

Somebody's Gotta Be The Bad Cop

It's a dirty job, but, unfortunately, somebody's gotta do it.  And this weekend?  Well, I was the one who got stuck being the bad cop.  Cause short people lying straight to my face is just not something that I take too lightly.

It all went down on Sunday, which was an unfortunate flurry of activity around here with the kids coming off the high…

Tatted Mom's Guide to Catching a Child Liar

"Mom! Um, my brother just said a bad word. He was trying to tell me a joke, then he said the 'F' word," is what my daughter came hauling into the living room to tell us yesterday. Hubby immediately called my son into the room, and his interrogation began. My son, of course, said that his sister was lying, and that she just wanted him to get into trouble. Thus the problem any parent eventually faces- catching the real liar.

My husband's method is simple.…

Another Mom Hat: High School Choice Researcher

We've come to that moment of parenthood that came much too quickly for my preference, but nevertheless, it's here. We are now looking into high schools for my first-born. I've always been a private-school, Catholic school kid & parent so now we're transitioning to the public school system. I've decided to go out of my comfort zone because we're fortunate to belong to an awesome school district with great high school pathway options. I've done some outside research & now it's a matter…

Motherhood is a Learning Journey

...This week has been a true test of my sheer will and strength as a mother--sending my 13-year-old, my first-born off on a 5-day retreat miles away, off the grid---no contact! It's been emotional--up & down--happy for him, worried for him, excited for him then missing him. Very much missing him.  And I survived. My Huz has survived (barely) & his younger brother (very bonded to him) also survived.  We missed him SO SO much!! But we love him and want him to experience…
