I (clearly) read too many parenting articles. I read them because I enjoy them; I read them hoping to learn something new; I read them for this blog. So, when I saw an article around the American obsession with parenting, I had to click on it.…Continue

Someone asked me the other day if I wanted to have another baby. People like to ask parents that question. (I don't know why, as it is really none of their business, but they ask.) I have my standard answers:…Continue

It happened at breakfast. I don't know why these things happen over breakfast. Maybe it is the quietness of the morning. Or the contemplative nature of maple syrup. But that is when my son started randomly telling me the story of how the twin towers fell on 9/11.…Continue

Three years ago I thought it would be a great idea to create a blog. I had no idea what I was doing. I logged in to Blogger and went through the steps. It was easy to get started but then I was stuck looking at a blank canvas not knowing what direction to take this new project.
Over the years my blog has become something more than what I originally thought…

There is a video of my son at seven months old. He is in his high chair with a sippy cup in front of him. In the video I ask him, "What does a baby pterodactyl say?" And he proceeds to screech and giggle in a manner that I find faintly Jurassic and very funny.…Continue

Rosemary Lichtman, Ph.D. and Phyllis Goldberg, Ph.D.
If you've recently celebrated a landmark birthday, you may be thinking about the milestones in your life. Crossing from one personal decade into another is a significant event and takes on a life of its own. Connecting with friends who are also making this transition can help focus on what you've gained over the years – memories, perspective, wisdom – rather than on what you've lost – agility, some energy, your youth!…

I'll be upfront about this - I am not qualified to write about circumcision. And it's because I am a woman. But I want to talk about it anyway.
The Center for Disease Control reports that the choice to circumcise boys is on the decline in the U.S. The…Continue

Wordless Wednesday as some blogs post up on this day... but as for me, it is a OUCH OUCH day...
Very early this morning I went for my breakie in a not-so-familiar food court. It was quite crowded and most of the tables were occupied... Instead of looking for a table first, my eyes were up on the stalls' banners .... doing just that, I paid the price... cos....
All of a sudden, my right leg twisted and I came tumbling down on the floor...then only I realized that there…

Tomorrow is Christmas Day... and wishes of Merry Christmas and Happy New Year has been "flying" here and there in Facebook, in blog posts, Sms-es, telephone calls... and from colleagues, friends and family...
So how are you celebrating your Christmas today? Tomorrow? As for me, going to church is something quite sombre tomorrow morning... no, it is not about the Christmas sermon... the sad news is that my Pastor will be making his last appearance in my church tomorrow and he will…

I wake up the next day, and before I’m out of bed, BOOM it hits me just like that. Everything in my mind has changed. This isn’t just a good thing, it’s a great thing. It is a blessing. I want kids. So maybe it didn’t happen the way that I thought it would. It definitely didn’t happen the way I envisioned, but that doesn’t mean it’s anything but great. I say it again to myself It is a blessing!
My brother’s statement from last night plays again in my head, “If you think of it…Continue
I leave the room and sit in the lobby for them to finish my paperwork. While I’m waiting, I send Jason a text saying, “I just wanted to let you know that I’m at Planned Parenthood. They confirm that I am pregnant and due in November.”
He sends a text back saying, “I don’t even know what to say to you.”
Stunned by this reply, I’m at a loss for how to respond. How does he not know what to say to me? Last I knew, it takes two for this result to happen.
He sends a follow-up…Continue

Since his car is at my place, I offer to pick him up so he doesn’t have to take a taxi.
I arrive to get him. He gets in the car and asks again why I’m crying. I hand him the pregnancy test.
He looks at it and says….“Well, you got what you wanted a baby and no guy.”
I reply, “Yeah, that’s every girl’s dream.”
He then says, “If it’s real that is.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You could have used Kool-aid on the stick.”
My mind is reeling in…Continue
I never thought I would be one of them. Not that I ever judged them, because my younger sister was one. It just never occurred to me that it would be me. I had been so picky about finding “the one,” and at 37 I thought I did…until reality set in and I knew I hadn’t.
Being self-employed, I didn’t have health insurance. So I went to Planned Parenthood to get on the pill. The nurse asked, as they always do, when was the first day of my last menstrual cycle? I don’t know about you, but I…Continue
Did I really just spend 5 minutes going through a Q&A about celebrities regarding whether each couple would last or not? YES. Am I embarrassed to admit it? YES. Why am I writing about it? I DON’T KNOW!…Continue

We've all heard the tragic stories: mom or dad forgets that a sleeping baby is in the back seat and they trudge off to work with baby in the car. They come back for lunch, or at the end of the day, and are faced with a dead child. It's heartbreaking, but it happens…Continue

Earlier this month, a family’s world was destroyed. A Liberty, MO family received notification that a Guatemalan judge had ordered the return of their seven-year-old adopted daughter.
This story caught my eye because I have a six-year-old Guatemalan daughter, and Liberty is only 40 miles away from where I live. So, it was hitting rather close to home.
