Family Calendars: Scheduling our Busy Family Lives

Life gets busier and more complicated as we go from childhood to adulthood.  First it’s all about us.  Then it’s about us and our family.  Then it’s about us, our family, and our friends.  Then, as we continue to grow and have families of our own, we add our spouses and children.  Then our parents get older, and we…

Why Do We Own

Most people say they own too much stuff.  We all know we are guilty of excess in some area of our lives.  However, WHY do we own the things we fill our homes, offices and cars with?  There are many theories, but here are a few:

First, our stuff allows us to do things. This is true for all the items we need in our lives to do things like cook, learn, groom and care for our children.  These things also help us control our environment.  For example, we WANT things like air conditioners…

Advice from Busy Moms

I have a lot of busy moms in my line of work.  A lot of them have their own “trade secrets” and I wanted to tap into that knowledge base and share their best tips with you.  Here is what I came up with.  Many of these are direct quotes from moms like you.  If they can do it, so can you!  Pick one tip and start there.

-Use grocery delivery services such as Pea Pod.  You can set up a recurring delivery so your staples arrive automatically every single week.  Don’t spend time at the…

How to Get Started Organizing

I recently had a discussion with some of my family about the boundaries I set for myself in terms of what I keep.  I have one bookshelf in my living area and it is divided up into sections; organizing books, business books, social media books, travel books, hiking guides, and of course, fiction books to keep and some are in a “to read” section.

I’ve been reading a lot and while I borrow a lot of books from the library, it means that my book shelf recently runneth over.  Instead of…

Things I've Learned This Week

** Santa needs to be A LOT more organized next year.

** I may never see my son again now that Wii U is hooked up in the basement.

** Goatdog REALLY likes to open presents.  Especially ones that don't belong to him.

** When it snows, everyone seems to have forgotten how to drive.

** Teepeeing the inside of your house…

Welcome to our Toy-Room

http://www.thepiggytoes.com/2012/11/16/welcome-to-our-toy-room/

One of the joys of, well, all of my pregnancies is that I organize and re-organize everything.  Tell me you’re the same way, yes?  During my last ‘nesting session’, I hit the toy room, purged lots of toys and re-organized everything.  My head was spinning with options as to what to do with all of their toys and…

How to Easily Organize Any Space In Your Home

Each day that I walk home from Aliya's bus stop I chat with one of my neighbors who also has a child that rides the bus with her. We basically share our thoughts on general things like life, kids and whatever we can think of for our five minute catch up as we walk home.

I work from home and I didn't have the previous day scheduled to work so me being my Martha Stewart self (I like to think so) kept myself busy. I told her how I organized Ayanna's entire closet before she came home…

Quarterly Reorganizing

Each quarter I think it's a good idea to check out my schedules and see if I need to make changes. School is back on the routine and my nephews had to get picked up  from school this month. So October is really going to look different. So lets get started.

I want to make time for all of you here at…

DotMine - Organization for Professionals, Families and Students

I have so many friends who have the latest smartphone – with all its fancy apps and productivity tools – yet, they still prefer to carry the good old-fashioned paper agenda.

I get it, actually. There is something very rewarding about jotting down do-not-forget’s and to-do’s on paper. And there is an immediate, tactile satisfaction too in scratching off that “done” item and…

Paper,Bills,Clutter Oh My!!

You’rwoman-billse a busy mom; you have to shuffle school work, doctor notes, work papers, bills, etc… Papers, papers, papers!!! I want to focus on one section of your many papers… “your bills”. When you get your bills what do you do with them? Do you put them in a box, bin, desk or the nearest open space? Pick your poison, and I did them all, then would sort them, mark due dates on calendars, and then file them in designated files. Ideally this would look nice and neat, but did I forget to… Continue

Stress Free Strategy # 9

Plan ahead

If it's predictable -- and many things are -- plan for it.

Take care of "to-dos" before they turn into crises, emergencies or late fees.

Some Examples:

Don’t let the gas tank get below a quarter tank.

In the event of a rushed morning before work, or worse yet, a real emergency, you won't have to make another stop; and you'll…

Making Resolutions a Reality

One year I was fed up with making resolutions and not seeing them through, so I renamed them goals. Which, of course, is what they are, but I was disguising them as something else thinking that I might be able to actually accomplish something by renaming them.

So, now I am back to calling them what they rightly should be - Resolutions. As I think back over the last 5 years only one year stands out as a year that 3 of the 5 resolutions were accomplished. That was the year that I… Continue
