What I Want for my Children

Argh! YOU DID WHAT?!

Yes. That's me on many an afternoon. Make that morning. OK, truth-be-told, it can happen at any moment. Today it was the crayon-covered rocker that did me in.

And despite the fact that children are not the behaviors they exhibit, I honestly have difficulty sorting the two when my impatient Aries-anger ignites.

Whew. Deep breath. Calm down. Re-focus. Now move forward.

Yes, having children who are ages 1, 3 and 5 can be challenging. But…

All Alone (Part 1)

It's storming outside tonight. Again.

I'm craving sunshine. Yes. This rain-loving, born-in-San-Diegan wants warmth from the sun and natural, bright light.

But, it is still May. One more day anyhow. And another shower can't be bad for the rainforest that surrounds us here. So, I'll just write about last night. When it wasn't raining. When it was surprisingly cold out and the sun was setting beyond the forest's edge.

Mommy's Wine: The Controversy

I don't know many women, unless they don't drink at all, that would argue with the fact that at the end of the day a nice glass of wine is like a big hug. Some women stay at home all day, and there is not a break to be had. No matter the age of your children, there is always something: the changing of diapers, clothes, feeding - whether it be…

Cooped Up

It rained all winter. A mix of rain and snow actually. And now that the sun has come out. Spring has arrived. Warmth has freed me from all of the layers.  And I'm feeling awfully cooped up this week.

It's raining again. Today was Day 2. Only. And it verged on the brink of beautiful and then hilarious followed by insane every hour. …

How long is a piece of balloon string? and more importantly what colour?

My first baby boy turned two yesterday. TWO! I can't believe it's been two whole years since I met first met him, coughing and spluttering after being dragged into being. What a blur of love, tears, awe, wonderment and it seems balloon ribbon choices. It's with shame I admit I spent at least 3 minutes discussing the balloon ribbon colour with a long suffering, yet very patient, party warehouse…

Blood Oranges and Sunsets

Last week I was so stoked to find blood oranges at the market. I love blood oranges. Actually, I love most any food that's visually stunning. Looks are a lot for me when it comes to food.

And as it turns out, names are a great influence to our girls.

You see, these… Continue

Oh, the Bugs

This is our first year at our home on the Lost Coast. And our first taste of the seasons has been memorable.

Fall was splendid. The mosquitoes dwindled and finally disappeared. The gigantic Laurel out back dropped its leaves in great heaps. The light green moss on our wrap-around porch turned bright green with the moisture in the air. And the weather grew colder. Suddenly.

And then with Winter's arrival. Cold. Frigid. Frost. Ice. Snow. Wait, we didn't know it snowed here. Not… Continue

The Last Goodbye

On May 3rd 1992, my son Eric Miller was killed in a one car collision. He was home visiting with family in Louisiana. My family and I visited Louisiana very often. However, when my son began to insist that he spend some time in Louisiana with our family, I reluctantly agreed.

After I received the phone call telling me that my beloved, beautiful and kindhearted son was killed in a car accident; I slowly began to understand why going home was so important to him. It seemed as if I was…

My Precious Angel Of A Child Is Testing Me!

It is inevitable that sooner or later, our "precious angels" will challenge our authority and power as their parents. Little do they know, we are usually always a step ahead and have the benefit of knowing them better than they know themselves...

My recommendations are to not force or use intimidation to "control" their behavior. Remember, even though we are parents, we still don't have the God given ability to "control" another human beings behavior and attempting this with a…

Own Your Beauty: The Authentic Self

Reposted from my blog Living Lusciousness

BlogHer came out with Own Your Beauty and I felt so inspired by what it means! It puts in mind my favorite Dove soap campaigns about real beauty and a positive self-image no matter the size, shape or color you are. Olay also has the Love The Skin You're In campaign that features caring for your skin and keeping it healthy. I'm absolutely happy that big… Continue

Planned Parenthood? ~www.TheBloggingMom.com~

Yesterday I was at Madison's basketball game just like I have been every weekend for the last umpteen years. Everything is so nice... enjoying the game... winning...all is good. Problem is, lately I can't actually watch the game because Hudson gets so much attention. Everyone that passes by tends to say something. Of course I don't mind. Most any stay-at-home mom will tell you they love any adult conversation, so this is a good excuse for some small… Continue

Modeling Imperfection

Today one thing is on my mind. It’s about all of the unintentional modeling we do. The modeling of imperfection. The modeling of poor parenting. The modeling of rushed decisions.

2010-08-17 - Tuesday Thoughts - Modeling Imperfection

When I think about the parent I strive to be, it doesn’t usually include many flaws or mistakes. It’s a…

All Boy or Out of Control???

My son has been deemed, “all boy” by numerous good-natured Southern women here in Nashville. I’m not naive; I realize this is a nice way to say, “Your two-year old son is borderline out of control. Have you considered Adderall?”. Despite my hesitation to accept his “all boy” title, I am slowly coming to grips with my lot in motherhood. It’s true, I did not win the “good baby” or “sweet toddler” lottery, in fact, I didn’t even have one matching number.

This past weekend he…

Motherhood and the Little Hotties

While I’m on the beach topic…I couldn’t help myself.

What in the world is that title about? Hotties?!

No, not a mid-life crisis. Just a thought or more as motherhood and age settle in on this thirty-something-mom of three kids.

A few weeks ago I had a lovely best-friends-date. Yes, two moms, happily strapped with one baby each (all older children left at home.) Lots of…

Do You Have Facebook Anxiety?

I avoided Facebook for a quite a long while.

Then, as I decided I was going to start a blog…it felt just a bit funny to have anxiety over joining the online community while sharing my life on a blog for all to see.

So, I joined. I added a few people. I added more people. People found me. I found them. I’ve not really figured out the chatting aspect to it…yet.

But, I’ve remained a bit aloof of the whole thing because, I’ve decided, I…

Tuesday Thoughts | Ahem...Exercise

I remember when I found out I was pregnant with baby #3. Yahoo! Wonderful. So excited.

Oh, the commitments to myself. ‘Boy, this time I’m going to stay on top of things. I’m going to do plenty of exercise. Eat healthy. Lots of rest.’ You see, pregnancy #2 was full of rich, dairy cravings,

and with my first child just turning one, our walks were just about as

fast as a snail’s pace at that time. Not super-fat-blasting, if you know

what I…
