New Study Connects Autism to Environmental Exposures

Healthy Child Healthy World, who I blog for because they educate parents to protect children from harmful chemicals, just informed me that a new scientific study linking autism to environmental exposures has rocked the pediatric health care community. That’s important information I want to pass on to you. Maybe your family is impacted by autism, or maybe this information can help prevent future cases of autism.

Boob job after having kids?

I'm amazed how many moms would opt for breast implants if they had the opportunity.

And I'm amazed how many moms believe the myth that breastfeeding was the cause for their sagging breasts. Pregnancy and factors like smoking causes breasts to sag, not breastfeeding.

As a breastfeeding advocate, I don't want that myth to be the…

Raising a Bilingual Child: Go Ahead, You Try It!

Cool, He’s Going to be Bilingual! Well, Maybe Not.

“Oh, wie schön!” was the only thing my mom could say before she choked up and started to cry.

Those were happy tears. I had called my parents in Germany to tell them that I was pregnant. My father’s first words were: “You better teach him German.” Well, maybe it was the second thing he uttered. But he hasn’t let up reminding me about the importance of raising my son bilingually since he was born four years ago. {…

Extended Breastfeeding Past the Toddler Age

Today is quite a special day — I have been breastfeeding my son for 3 years, 3 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days. Yay for extended breastfeeding!

When I started breastfeeding, I didn’t have a goal in mind of how long I wanted to do it. I had such breastfeeding problems during the first two weeks with sore nipples, all I was concerned with was learning how to breastfeed correctly so it would stop hurting so much. Thinking about how long I was going to do it was furthest from my mind, all I… Continue

Playing With Trains at Midnight

Hmm, time for Not Me! Monday. You want honesty? You got it! My next New York City Moms blog article was not overdue. I finally finished it this morning and it’s in the cue. I’ll let you know when it gets published. It’s called “Natural Birth, Duggar Style.” I do not still owe someone a book review, have to watch a video about breastfeeding and write the review, and manage 1781…

Are Mothers Who Choose Not to Breastfeed Selfish?

While pregnant or even before, every woman inevitably thinks about the topic of breastfeeding. Will I breastfeed my baby? For how long? I think most women have the best intentions and try to breastfeed and then stop after different periods of time – they might breastfeed a week, they make it through the rough first few weeks and go on to nurse for a few months or a year, and then there are the extended breastfeeding moms like me.

Breastfeeding was one of the things I most looked… Continue

I Can't Decide -- Do I want Another Child?

Today, I found myself pondering again what I have thought about a few times since Landon was born: do I want another child? Landon was only months old when family members and friends started to ask about the second child, and a lot of my mom friends seem to be having the second child now or are pregnant or working towards it. Not us. Thankfully, I don’t have a huge urge to have another one, although I loved being pregnant and had such a wonderful drug-free birth experience. I say thankfully… Continue

Dooce Inspired: The Case of Our Deranged Bed

I am reading Heather Armstrong’s (better known as dooce.com to millions who read her personal blog) book It Sucked and Then I Cried. It’s insightful, self-deprecating and hilarious, as I expected — I love her blog. So I thought I’ll post a dooce-ish entry inspired by Heather’s writing:

So we finally set up our bed tonight. We moved into this house about a month ago, and we still were sleeping on just the box spring and mattress. (Well, mostly Don sleeps in the bed and I… Continue

How Long Did You Breastfeed? Why Did You Stop?

After my wonderful experience with it, I have become passionate about breastfeeding and would like to encourage as many moms as possible to start and continue to breastfeed — that is a major reason why I started my blog, DagmarBleasdale.com. No matter how long you choose to breastfeed — one week or four years — I want to be a resource and cheerleader for all new mothers because I believe most women can nurse their child with the… Continue

First Night Away From Toddler--Why I Co-Sleep--Safety Guidelines

My niece invited all the Bleasdale women to New Hampshire to celebrate her bridal shower, and I was exited to go. L is 2 ½ now and I have never been away from him for a night. We practice attachment parenting and co-sleeping, meaning he sleeps next to me. So going to the shower meant that Don had to take care of L by himself for two days, including one night. I am the only one who can get our sweet little boy to sleep, by bouncing with him on an exercise ball or nursing him, so this was going… Continue

This is why I only have one child :)

I Don't Get Facebook!

Am I the only one who doesn’t want 300 “friends” on Facebook? Am I the only one with a cell phone that doesn’t have a camera? Am I the only one with no interest in texting? The latest and greatest for a lot of other moms I know is being on Facebook, everyone declares to be addicted to it—I have to admit, I don’t get it.

I finally decided to sign up with Facebook and Twitter about two weeks ago, since I understand that as a blogger you “have” to be on them, it is one way how people… Continue

Find Your Passion - And Pursue it!

I just came back from “Mom’s’ Night Out – Women Who Make a Difference,” an event organized by Beth Feldman from rolemommy.com. It was wonderfully inspiring to hear Lee Woodruff talk about her journey after her husband Bob suffered a brain injury in Iraq, Alison Tepper Singer’s advocacy for autism that grew out of her daughter being diagnoses as autistic, and Lauren Candela-Katz’s involvement in fundraising. All of them, including Beth, stressed that they are doing what they are passionate… Continue
