Admitting you need sleep is the first step

My son's alarm goes off at 7:35. I can hear him get up, turn the alarm off and then...silence. I know he has gone back to bed. At 8 am, I tentatively go into his room and gently wake him up. He is cranky and angry and tells me that he feels like he didn't sleep at all. I do my best to be gentle with him and coax him into the day, even though I desperately wish I could send him back to bed for a few more hours.…

Keeping tv out of the bedroom

In my fantasy life, I would have a treadmill in the family room where we keep the television. This way, if I wanted to watch tv, I would pair it with the treadmill and get more exercise in my life as I walked to watch.

But, that fantasy hasn't come true (yet).…

Who is up in the middle of the night?

It was 2:33 am.

I know the time, because I bothered to look as I made my way into my son's room to nurse him. I was a different kind of tired that I had never felt before - mommy exhausted. But when I changed my son and started feeding him, and we were cuddled up on our special rocking chair, I was…

Staying home when you are sick

I was trying to concentrate at work, when I heard it. A phlegmy cough. Then a pause. Then that cough again. Someone in my office was sick.

I admit to being guilty of this myself - going to work while sick. I have rationalized this because I think "it's just a cold," that I can "work through it" or that I…

Bed rest and the toll it takes

Bed rest for me was AWFUL, but it takes it’s toll on the whole family. This was for my fourth pregnancy and two out of my three previous had been a little over 3 weeks premature. Due to my age (33) and the fact that my cervix was shortening every time I went in, the doctors thought it best to put me on bed rest at 23 weeks along. I was devastated, especially since I was a somewhat active person. I mean I had to be, I had 3 boys! Luckily I wasn’t on “strict” bed rest, I still got up to take… Continue

Sick and Bored, What To Do?

It's frustrating being sick. If you can't sleep but have to rest what do you do?  For the first few hours it may be fun but after that it is just boring.  How do we keep the mind busy while the body rests?
