What to talk about after the sex talk

I am a big proponent of talking about sex in an age-appropriate way with your children. My son knows that he can ask me questions and he will get honest explanations. He knows the correct anatomical names for body parts, he understands how babies are born and he even understands the basics of how breast milk is made. As he gets older, we will…

She's growing up too fast

I can still remember the day the nuns and teachers separated the girls and the boys in seventh grade to cover sex education. In retrospect, it was probably worse for the boys, since the monsignor was brought into the school to talk to them. We girls at least had the female science teacher in addition to the nuns.…

A Case for Sex Education

(previously posted on

There is a very vocal minority who believes that sexual education for children and teens should be nonexistent, that somehow keeping a child ignorant is "protecting his or her innocence." I firmly disagree with this. Scratch that; make that strongly, emphatically, vehemently disagree.

That belief ignores a very…

Video: Sex After Baby

Dear Diary,

My entire life I was taught to get married first and have sex second. Obviously, that didn't play out. Nonetheless, I always associated sex with guilt. I felt guilty for committing a sin and for fornicating with someone who wasn't my husband. I felt like I somehow blocked my blessings in life, because I wasn't following my mom's instructions or God's for that matter. Although…

How are babies made?

We were eating dinner in a Chinese restaurant when my son asked me how babies were made. I swallowed my mouthful of sweet-and-sour chicken and answered him with an age-appropriate summary of how sperm and an egg join together and then grown inside a woman's womb to make a baby.…

No, I am Not Trying for a Girl so STOP ASKING!

If I had a dollar for every person that questioned me about the sex of my children and had an opinion on my non-existent future child, I would be sitting on my private beach with a delicious cold cocktail in my hand waiting for my personal chef to deliver my lunch. BUT…sadly I don’t, so I am sitting in my house writing this article…

Sex Ed classes for children and parents

When I was nine, my Mother showed me a video in which a mother created a uterus and ovaries out of pancake batter to show her friend's daughter how menstruation worked. Some of you may be weirded out by this, others of you will have a vague memory of the video and rest of you will be shocked at how many hits come back when you Google "pancake batter menstruation video." (Evidently, lots of people have fond memories of that…

When to talk about pornography

When I was eight years old, my friend Annie told me about a movie she saw at home. She described scenes of a naked woman riding a horse and a man peeing in a woman's mouth. Many (many) years later I realized Annie had watched one of her father's porn videos. (Is this a Sorry, Mom moment? I don't know.)

Why Couldn't it Be 50 Shades of Purple

Discussions about 50 Shades of Grey seem to be everywhere, ad nauseam.  I have been wrestling whether or not to jump into the conversation but I decided I could no longer keep silent as I am passionate about helping people have better relationships and I think there are a few issues that haven’t been addressed yet (believe it or not!) ... so here goes.

First, I love the color Gray…

Just Add A Hint Of Sex To The Title

Okay, so about a week ago I wrote a post about email marketing techniques.  Remember...I said I wanted to figure out a way to get people to actually open my newsletter?  On my big BOOK LAUNCH DAY???

Well, here are the results of my efforts.  Out of 229 recipients, 45.4% opened the email. That is a ROCKING number, folks!!!!  The industry average, according to Mail Chimp, is 16.9%.

This is what I learned.

A sexy title with the…
