Act 1: In which my son gets clean
Synopsis: At about 7:30 pm, we tell our son it is bath time and ask him to go upstairs for his bath. Repeatedly. Our son yells that he is not dirty or stinky and does not need a bath. Or, he says that he is busy playing/reading/doing any activity that is not bathing. When he fails to comply, we either lead him up the stairs…

We've all seen those old television sitcoms (or at the very least, Fred and Wilma Flintstone) where the husband and wife are sleeping in separate beds. This mostly had to do with The Production Code of 1930 (also known also as the Hays Code), which, among other things, forbid showing a married couple with a double bed. Here's…Continue

Our cat (who we love) is on a diet. And she is hungry. HUNGRY! She knows that Mom will be the one who is going to get up and feed her. I woke at 6 am, which (thanks to the end of daylight savings time) was really 5 am, and decided I might as well stay up and enjoy the extra hour of my day.…Continue

Until you become an adult, you never really understand that your parents really WERE looking out for your best interests when you were a kid. As much as you thought they were unfair and totally out to ruin your life, they really did kinda know what they were doing (most of the time anyway).…Continue
It's 3 am. The house is quiet. It is nice and dark, except for the blue lights on the computer router that cast weird shadows in the office. The dishwasher has long stopped running. Do you know where your child is? I know where mine is. He is right beside my bed. And he wants to talk.

It's late at night. You are about to head off to bed, but before you do, you make a quick stop in your child's bedroom. After readjusting the covers (how do they kicked off every night?) and retrieving various animal friends from the floor, you hear it. It may be quiet at first, but then it becomes an easily identifiable sound. Is your child snoring?…Continue

One of the hardest things for me about parenthood is the constant change. I like a slow, easy schedule that is both flexible and predictable. My mornings need to be quiet. I need to get all my work done before 3. I need to get dressed early or it will never happen. All of these things are not what parenthood is about, and I constantly struggle with getting my head back in the game.
Things are not working for our family right now. Ben is getting older, and Baby Sister is getting older,…Continue

Co-sleeping is a fairly common practice and many parents sleep in the same bed or room with their young baby or toddler. This is a very controversial topic in the United States and most people think co-sleeping is completely dangerous and that it should be avoided. However, as a mom I know how hard it is to be able to get a good night sleep especially…Continue

Today I decided to buy my kids alarm clocks. This wasn't a 'teach my children responsibility' purchase, it was more of a 'Let mommy sleep until 9am on the weekend PLEASE' kind of buy!Continue

For the past few nights, Squeaker has slept in 5+ hour stretches! Pre-baby, I did not understand how this could possibly be a good thing, but after months of uncomfortable pregnancy sleep and 10 weeks of being in various states of consciousness–I feel like I’ve won the lottery! I have found sleep to be one of the most contentious topics in new mom land. Where does he sleep? Where do I sleep? Where does dad sleep? Is it okay for him to sleep in a chair? Can he sleep swaddled? Is he…Continue

One of the top New Year’s Resolutions has to be along the lines of losing weight, getting fit and eating healthier. We make these resolutions with the very best of intentions but then life gets in the way. Our bosses need us to stay late at the office. The kids get sick. We stress about gathering our tax…Continue

I apologize for being MIA on here lately, but unfortunately, my father had a bad stroke and was hospitalized. It's been pretty horrific to say the least, but rest assured, I HAVE been keeping a mental list of wacky things I've learned. And here they are:

You know how you had that one toy in your bedroom as a kid that kinda creeped you out once your parents turned out the lights and tucked you in for the night? Mine was a clown who I swear glared at me from his perch high up on my bookcase. (Special thanks to Poltergeist for that little childhood fear.) But now that I'm an adult (allegedly anyway), my daughter has…Continue
