The Day School Closed

I am watching the great blizzard of 2011 raging outside my window. There is a fire in the fireplace, homemade salsa simmering on the stove, and a glass of Irish whiskey within reach. Life can’t get much better. I had nowhere I needed to be today, and I have an appointment tomorrow, but if I don’t make it, it’s OK.

School was closed today and it has already been cancelled for tomorrow. I don’t think the girls have gone to school for a full week since before Christmas. I am…

And the Northern Girls with the Way They Kiss...

It is snowing in Kansas. Finally. I have had to endure the national reports of all my friends as they talked about falling snowflakes, shoveling drives, and building snowmen. Seriously? I think they brag about their white stuff just to make me jealous.

I am not Martha: Our Gingerbread Shanty

I think of myself as a pretty creative person, decent at crafting and creating. Apparently my crafting niche does not extend to the making of gingerbread houses however. First, I made the icing way too thin, so it took me 3 days and lots of strategic propping to get the house to stand up. I decided not to even attempt to prop up the chimney, so the kids and I put it aside ate it. Then, I made the decorating icing too thin so most of our candy decorations were…

Fargo Far Gone

Once upon a time, I lived in Fargo, ND, that cold, windy, desolate place with an Academy Award winning movie named after it. Tom’s first job out of college took us to this unthinkably isolated part of the country. I remember the day he received the phone call informing us where we would be moving. We were hoping for St. Louis, or Savannah, GA.… Continue

Snow

Me
I rolled out of bed. I could feel it in my bones and down my spine. It wasn't necessary to peek out the window but I needed to confirm with my eyes what my body was already telling me. It snowed last night....

First Snow and the Perfect Gift

A few days ago we woke up to a few inches of snow! I got some nice pictures of Landon enjoying it. Now that he is three he seemed to be even more exited about the first snow of the season...

Dee Dum, Dee Dum, Delightful, Redux

[From my blog: http://thebeetgoeson.blogspot.com]

When I opened the curtains this morning, the sky was overcast. Our streak of nice-ish weather seemed over.

A while later, after The Spouse and children left, I looked out the window and saw people on the street carrying umbrellas.

That's not good.

Just a moment ago, I thought it suddenly seemed quite dark in here. I looked up.

It's snowing.

The kids went to school today in… Continue

Snow and Ice Storms

When you know the weather is reported as Bad:( take advantage of it. Run out and grocery shop for the items you may need for baking. Take a run through the craft stores in your area and pick up a craft that you have always desired to make but don't have the time to do. Go to your local book store and select an interesting book you have not had time to read or select a children's book and read with your family. Games...we are not game family and I wish we were. Put out an old game from your… Continue

Need ideas on how to get the word out there.

Recent visitors suggested I try to market our guest house to parents of Autistic children. Their child loved the animals and whole atmosphere of the farm. The parents were able to relax completely in the guest house and cook and do things whenever they wanted. They had been searching for 'hands on' activities for their child. He was able to feed the cows, visit the llama and bond with the goats. If anyone has any ideas how to target such an audience, I would greatly appreciate it. Or if… Continue

A Christmas Wish

(I was tagged with the holiday story tag. So I had to write a holiday story on Kat Logic and then have to tag 4 others to do a New Years story. I'm including a portion of it here , sinse it's rather long. You can view the rest of it by visiting Kat Logic.)

WV moms combat bulky coats with innovative outerwear: Babycapes

No responsible parent would ever knowingly put their child in harm’s way while traveling in a vehicle, but this winter, many parents will do just that merely by dressing their children for cold weather.

Martinsburg, WV, mom, Elizabeth Hostler, was shocked to learn that she was putting her daughter, Andy, at risk every time she put her into her infant… Continue
