Costa Rica: New Ways to Nurture Family

I recently traveled through Costa Rica, a small Central American country where peace of mind is a natural commodity. Visiting felt like a breath of fresh air with the slow pace of living and ecological mindfulness. The country has no need for a military presence and family life is a top priority.

High unemployment in the US continues to contribute to the economic downturn. And multi-generational households increase…

Women Olympians Medal as Role Models

Ever since Title IX guaranteed equal funding for girls' sports programs 40 years ago, we've seen the results in school, the workplace and women's self-confidence. Studies have shown that girls who play sports in high school are more likely to do better in science classes, complete college, avoid substance abuse and join the workforce. And the more time they spend participating in team sports, the higher their self-esteem.

Naturally, there's also an effect on the playing…

So You Didn't Win the Lottery…Now What?

Rosemary Lichtman, Ph.D. and Phyllis Goldberg, Ph.D.

Now that all the mega-lottery winners have stepped forward, the overwhelming odds are you didn't win. Americans spent $1.5 billion in their quest to win the jackpot, fantasizing about how they would happily spend the $656 million to be paid out to the winner. As it happened, there were three winning tickets so the final after-tax take home for each will be about $100 million. Still, nothing to sneeze at.

Are you…

They Can't Take Santa

I love my children. They are absolutely unbreakable and strong in spirit and it is SO inspiring. Today my 8 and 9 yr old found out from the other kids in school (and a teacher!) that Santa Claus isn't real. Totally heartbreaking, because I was determined to let them ride that train for a very long time. But with confirmation from a teacher, they weren't buying anything I was trying to sell them. My youngest had fallen asleep already, so luckily his dreams were still intact. So finally, we…

Forgiveness Isn't a Four Letter Word

There comes a time in every humor blogger's life where it's necessary to put aside the humor for a post or two and be serious. That day has come, Inklingers. There's a topic I've been wanting to cover for a little while now, and it's finally become time let the gates down and the seriousness flow.

This post, too, while great for anyone who comes across it, is meant more for women, as ladies, I will be speaking woman-to-woman to you all through it.

A few weeks ago my life fell… Continue

Strength

It is all come and gone. What I feared was nothing else but simple fear. My boy is doing great.

Wednesday morning went by fast. Boy took a bath and discovered how much he enjoys it! He fell backwards but he started kicking. Not even 2 minutes later, he was on his belly splashing water on his face and kicking the tub to get to the other site, turning around and doing the same. All with a cute little grin on his face.

Jokingly, Ty asked around what time I wanted to be at the… Continue

Cancer Blessings

Cancer Blessings.....

At first glance, these two words don't fit together. They appear to be an oxymoron. How can cancer, something so horrible and devastating, be paired with such a lovely word as blessing? How can a word that brings on the feeling of mire and darkness sit next to a word of hope and light?

I would say that they do fit together. I know my sister Amy would.

Amy and I have been in almost daily contact since her diagnosis. Many of the days have… Continue
