Clutter and Parenting

Simple Sunday is where I’ve been exploring my thoughts on clutter. So, as part of a series I didn’t know I was starting a few weeks ago (the art of de-cluttering, 5 things I’ve learned about clutter,…

The Mother’s Day Gift to Give Yourself

Mothers can have bad days – kids misbehave, work gets on top of you, the house is a dump, your husband is being useless, etc. Mothers often tell me that when they are having a bad day, they think of me and they instantly feel better. The chaos in my life provides them with some comfort in those manic mama moments.

But I have to let you in on a little secret: it’s not that bad. In fact, it’s pretty darn good. Sure, I don’t get a lot of sleep and nights out on the town are few and far…

Brenda Novak's Online Auction to Benefit Diabetes Research

Diabetes is a killer. My 15 year old son was diagnosed with it when he was 11. It's been a tough almost five years, but things are looking up. I met Brenda Novak, a NY Times bestselling author, at a local writers meeting. Her son has the disease, too. Brenda is a dynamo. She took a proactive approach and started her Online Auction a few years ago. Since then, it's raised more than $700,000 for diabetes research!!

I host a page on the auction site, and this week Brenda is…

Giving Kids What They Don’t Want

I posted a blog recently about the value of saying “No” to kids. The gist was:

1) Your kids will be fine if they don’t get what they want all the time.

2) If you’re going to say “No” then be sure to follow through – unless you like to lead the double life of parent and white noise machine.

I just discovered another good time to say “No”– when it comes to buying them nice things. Ya know why? Because they don’t…

My Un-Birthday So Far (With Cat Poop)...

The night before my birthday, last night, a dear friend I never see anymore because she lives in Berlin---GERMANY---visited and we stayed up talking and sharing a bottle of wine until midnight. I wouldn't have traded that visit for anything, but it was late, my son is an early riser and right before I headed for bed (where my husband snoozed blissfully) I started my period. Oh yes: TMI! TMI! I know. However, to carry on---my first birthday present was a huge dose of real life with cramps,…

14 Not Forgotten

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre.

I was 18-years-old when the 14 women were gunned down. As an earlier adopter of feminism, I had already done much of the reading required of a budding feminist and had some very decent mentors in place.

When the Montreal Massacre happened, it rocked my young world. Twenty years have gone by and never have I forgotten that day. Throughout my life, I have… Continue

Moving House

So we finally bit the bullet and are moving house. The thought of it is overwhelming – so much crap to be sorted, packed or purged. With six kids, I know you can imagine just how much crap we’re talking here. Adding further stress is the prospect of making our current house look nice enough that some other family will want to buy it.

Getting our house sale-ready will be a big job. My kids have left their marks – on the… Continue

Anyone Out There With Healthy Kids? Anyone??

As all you mamas know, once one kid is down, it’s just a matter of time before they all start dropping like flies. I’ve got a lot of flies, so things can drag on for quite some time. In fact, with so many flies, the whole little germ fest tends to recycle and the first kid who brought it into the house is starting round two of something while the last kid is just heading into recovery mode. It’s like a twisted game of germ tag.

So… Continue

Earth Promise: Reduce and Reuse: It Helps the Environment

Stuff. Possessions. Things. We all have way too much of it. Especially if you have children or if you are one to hold onto things for sentimental reasons. (You know who you are!) There may be a psychological underlying reason why you hold onto your stuff, but no matter what the reason is, there are ways to help reduce and reuse it.

Here are some ideas to reduce and reuse:

Birthday party favors. When my girls come home from birthday parties, the flood… Continue

Humility = Parenting

*To enter the Skin Care Giveaway, click here. Contest ends on Saturday, winner announced on Sunday.*

There are days I love and adore my kids. And then there are days I envy those I know who are childless.

But, one thing I've learned from being a mother, is that I am indeed humbled. If ever I thought I was on top of my game, it only took having children to teach me otherwise.

Humility,… Continue
