Dear Liquor Store,
Perhaps you may have heard some rumblings about the impending summer vacation that's about to pounce on the town here any day now. Yes, kids will soon be out terrorizing the streets and pimping lemonade hardcore on every effing corner. They will be changing their clothes 357 times a day, thereby creating even more…Continue

So if you're anything like me, you're trying your damnedest to find something for your kids to do so that they don't kill each other over summer vacation. And that "something" would preferably be an activity that keeps 'em occupied for a long stretch of time, perhaps even long enough for Mama to have a well-deserved glass of wine and maybe even *gasp* take a pee in…Continue

The Naticaus, based out of Norfolk, Va.They retired the USS Wisconsin, and turned her into a 3story museum. Ranging from Ocean life, History of Jamestown to Naval History. We had such a wonderful time at the Nauticaus, in semi costume at that. Gabe so wanted to where his Liberty Spikes, but unfortunately, I was out of hair spray, so he had to settle for making a costume instead. He is such a character. I swear, he…Continue

I have been coming across blogs here and there about the stress of having their children home for the summer months. And I can’t help but wonder why. Summer is such a wonderful time of the year. There is so much to do. Homeschooling changes your view on things.

My son has a new hobby, but he knows it won't last long.
He catches fireflies. He zips around the yard, diving, jumping, doing his best to outwit the twinkling little insects and capture them, for just a moment, in his jar.
Then he holds them up to the sky and lets them go.
Firefly season in Michigan is fleeting. For just a few weeks our weather is perfect and our yards glow. Our days are warm and our nights are clear and cool.
Mother Nature lulls us into forgetting the soggy…

I have a summer cold. It sucks.
I rarely get sick, but I guess my number came up and the Cold Fairy decided to whack me with her sick stick. Colds in the winter aren’t so bad, because you can curl up on the couch with hot tea and lemon and be miserable with yourself. But in the summer, not so much. The garden doesn’t care that my throat hurts, and the basil and kale certainly don’t give a shit that all I want to do is take a nap. Nope. And apparently, the children still expect…Continue

Cheers! Summer is officially here. And based on the weather here, summer didn't want anyone to forget it.
It was H-O-T all week.
After weeks of back and forth warm-and-then-cold-rainy-days, summer is here full throttle. And I'm excited that our tall, seeding grass will die back soon, so I can perhaps breathe clearly again. Sniff sniff.

As my kids grow older, I'm becoming a sucker for anything that measures how little they are at this stage in their lives. I love crafts that use their finger or handprints, like here and here. I have their infant footprints framed in my bedroom. I imagine that twenty years from now I will cherish all things that…Continue

As I drive Elliott and Hunter around to their various camps this summer, I am reminded of the summer of 1988. The summer I was a camp counselor at Camp Cormorant, on Big Cormorant Lake in Lake Park, MN.
