Dear old(er) Dad

When our son was younger, we would ask him questions we thought he didn't know the answer to, just to hear the funny answers he would come up with.…

Finding friend time again

I'm a little bummed. I got a text from a faraway friend who is going to be in my city next week, but it happens to be on a day I will not be around. It is one of those spontaneous meetings that just didn't work out and I am trying to take comfort in the fact that I will see her again in a few months for our twice-a-year gals getaway.…

Switching between work and family

I've talked before about how my brain is compartmentalized. I have a hard time moving between work and family life without a transition period in between (which is why I've been able to make my peace with traffic).…

The parent you prefer

Like many mothers before me, I have always assumed that my son would have a few years of devotedly following me around before deciding that he wanted to be just like his wonderful Daddy, and then he would start following him around all the time. And, for the most part, this has started to happen: My little guy has started to decline time with me in favor of hanging out more frequently with my husband.…

Spending time with the one you love

My husband and I try to have lunch together at least once a week. He and I are fortunate enough to work only a few blocks apart, and that Tuesday lunch is a treat. It is wonderful to see him in the middle of a busy working day.…

new books that would make a great addition to any child's library

I believe its VERY important to have some sort of library for your child. By the time I was expecting my first child I  owned about 25 children's books waiting for the mind to explore.
Books like this board book from Penguin Random House book publisher,…

No time like the present

My son is doing his math homework on the computer. Today's lesson centers on the clock. He dutifully types in the time that each clock face represents. Since he is pretty good at this, he whizzes through all the questions.…

The 15-minute mile

Something very silly occurred to me the other day, as I was thinking about how I don't make enough time in my day for exercise. My problem is that I have been looking at my schedule for a large block of time, but the truth is I don't need that. I just need 15 minutes.…

What do you have to lose?

I try very hard not to lose my temper with my son. I repeat phrases in my head like "he's only six" or "he's still learning" or "will he have a memory of this moment?" but sometimes it is inevitable. I yell; he cries; he loses things.…

Dinner at home

As mentioned before, I am the primary cook in my family. I love cooking. And I feel secure enough to admit that the idea of cooking for my family has been integrated with what I think constitutes Mommyness for me.…

The TV isn't invited to dinner

Sometimes when my husband has to work late, I give my son a special treat and let him watch a movie while he eats dinner. It's a rare event, but one that I can justify since most of our dinners are spent around the family table, eating and talking about our days. That together time at dinner is important to me, as it is one of the best parts of my day.…

Mommy, please put the phone down

In my head, I still think I do a good job of not using my smartphone in front of my son. That may or may not be reality: I have been working a lot lately, so I know he has seen me distracted by my phone. But the subject is on my mind a lot: When I am with my son, I should be fully with my son.…

How much time do you spend with your children?

Sometimes I don't think I spend enough time with my son.

I work full-time (and overtime). So on weekdays, I see my son as I motivate him through his morning routine and from when I get dinner on the table through when I tuck him into bed at night. Weekends are considerably better as we go through our chores…

I need few more life and adult age to complete my general work what I really want to complete... :)

When Mommy needs a time out

Sometimes my son pushes me over the edge. It's part of his growing up - he pushes his boundaries and learns the consequences of disrespect. My patience level - like all parents - varies. There are days when I can shake it off, and then there are days when I yell.…

All screens come with an off button

My son now has Minecraft on his iPad. And like most new electronic privileges in our household, it came with a set of rules.

So far, he has taken to the rules quite well. Whenever I tell him that his time is up with the…
