Christmas Gift Ideas for Infants – Eight Early Learning Toy Gift Ideas for Babies

Are you need some great gift ideas for your baby this Christmas?  As you know babies don’t need very many toys, especially during the first four months.  Once your baby turns 4 months old, he or she will need to begin spending time on their tummy to help develop their motor skills and strengthen their core muscles.   Even if your child isn’t quite ready to play with the toys, babies are always interested in looking around and exploring objects around them.  Playtime is also a great way…

I am a Mother and...a Liar

I cannot be the only one…who has noticed that being a mother has made me an unintended liar.  The lies I tell are usually in my son’s best interest, for instance I don’t really know if the dog will bite him if he pets her while she is eating, but I think it’s safer not to, so I say with great confidence that he will get…

Edu Science 450x Starter Microscope Review

I had a coupon and the "birthday bucks" from ToysRUs, so instead of letting it go to waste as I sometimes do, I decided to make a quick detour to ToysRUs yesterday. I was kids free for a couple of hours, so there was no one there to tug on my clothes and whine that they're tired of hungry or "want to go hommmmmmmeeeeee". My "quick stop" ended up being more like 45 minutes.…

Anatomy of a Playdate

I came home today to find my son’s cousins have come over to play for the afternoon. With my son suitably entertained for the time being and my husband on kid patrol, I am comfortably ensconced at my desk with a cup of hazelnut coffee and a croissant slathered in Nutella (what else?) and…

Freaky Furby

You know how you had that one toy in your bedroom as a kid that kinda creeped you out once your parents turned out the lights and tucked you in for the night?  Mine was a clown who I swear glared at me from his perch high up on my bookcase.  (Special thanks to Poltergeist for that little childhood fear.)  But now that I'm an adult (allegedly anyway), my daughter has…

Welcome to our Toy-Room

One of the joys of, well, all of my pregnancies is that I organize and re-organize everything.  Tell me you’re the same way, yes?  During my last ‘nesting session’, I hit the toy room, purged lots of toys and re-organized everything.  My head was spinning with options as to what to do with all of their toys and…

Pink is Just a Color and so is Blue....available soon

My new book, Pink is Just a Color and so is Blue will be available on Amazon in 2 weeks.

Pink is Just a Color and so is Blue is inspired by my 2 boys.  I once heard my older son telling my younger one that he was “like a girl” because he liked the color pink and enjoyed playing with toys that some people might…

Little Girl Bike

I can't decide when to purchase Izzy her first bike/trike.  Once in awhile we make a trip out to Toys R US to play.  It gives her the opportunity to play.  We make a two hours of it just to window shop and try things out.  The last time we were there was the first time she wanted to sit on a trike and was…

Finding Your Frugal Side

As soon as a baby enters our world everything changes. We no longer have the extra funds to eat out, nor do we have the energy. After all, isn’t just finding time to take a shower a feat that makes us smile from ear to ear?

I don’t find it necessary to be an extreme couponer to be frugal. While I would truly love the idea of being able to dedicate the kind of time, focus, and dedication it requires to take couponing to that level of success that…

Flexibath Toys

After reading an article yesterday about how often you should bathe your child, I started to think about our own bath time routine. Joshua is 18 months old now and since he was a few weeks old we have given him a bath every night, without fail. In fact the only time he's missed his night time bath is on the odd occassion when we've had no hot water (thanks to a crumby boiler!).

Bath time is important not just for the obvious cleanliness reasons but for Joshua it's a change of…

Award-Winning Teacher Kimberly Dana Pens Children’s Book for Girls

Pretty Dolls by Kimberly Dana, a finalist in the Children’s Picture Book category at the 2011 Pacific Northwest Writers Association Literary Contest, is a delightful story about overcoming jealousy and the love a girl can share with her special doll, no matter what she looks like.

Little Tasha has several…

Adventures in Grandparenting

Grandparents are special people;

  • There are lots of t-shirts complimenting their generosity (If daddy says no, grandpa says yes).
  • We have special days to honor them with house plants & neck ties.
  • They are presented with global awards for their outstanding service (World’s Best Grandparent).
  • They are the most cost-effective child care option and provide a low grandparent-grandchild ratio to provide special…

The Kim K Barbie

I'm a recovering Barbie-addict. I played with them until I was like 16, and I still would if I didn't have all boys. I'm a little burnt out on trucks, pirates and Spiderman, so anytime we're at someone's house and they have little girls, I'll immediately wonder if they have Barbies. I even have a method:

  • I'll make eye contact with the girl. Whether she's across the room or simply in the seat next to me, eye contact will be…

Drugs, Theft, and Bad Things Little Girls Do

I’ve already confessed to forgery. But I’ve done other hard crimes too.

It’s no secret to anyone who knows me or reads this blog that Barbies were an important part of my childhood. Not in a BFF kind of way, but more in a drug addict kind of…

The Toy-Which-Must-Not-Be-Named

My son doesn’t have a Jack-in-the-box. Excuse me while I pause and breathe a sigh of relief.

But what does alarm me are the toys that play music, light up, or have some other battery operated function… especially at 3 am.

If you’re a mom it’s not hard to imagine that 3 am wake-up call from your child. You hear a small sound coming from the baby monitor and hope it doesn’t become a bigger more upset sound. But the moans and groans become a cry and you accept your fate (if you…

The Real Toy Story

It's Friday the Thirteenth.  Only seems appropriate to blog today about something creepy.  How about your child's creepiest toy?

There really isn't anything that can make a horror movie freakier than having a traditional children's toy turn into some kind of demonic character. You could look at the other side of it all as in Toy Story where the toys actually come to life when 'people' aren't around.  I remember being woken up in the middle of the night less than a year ago by one of…

I was a Barbie Girl

My sister is 4 years younger than me. When we were just kids, those 4 years felt more like 40. We were, and remain to this day, total opposites. I’m reserved, she’s outgoing. I play it safe, she takes risks. I like books, she likes being active. I’m girly, she’s a tomboy. But growing up in rural Pennsylvania gave us few options for playmates. We had no choice but to get along or be alone.

Opposites or not, we could always get along long enough to play Barbies.

Our evenings and…
