Gift Guide - For L'il Ones (and not so Little)

Every day, our kids are bombarded with commercials for toys they must have! Most of these toys will probably hold their attention for about five minutes and end up at the back of their closet. I try to never fall prey to these crazes (well, I did with the zu zu pets but only because I thought it would be a…

Awesomeness = Grandma!

Are you a marathon shopper?  Maybe the one that get to the stores the night before a HUGE sale for the best deals?  I've seen some amazing pictures of the deals people have been getting from the Black Friday shopping trips and a part of me (a very SMALL part) wonders what it would be like.  continue

Why do we buy so many kids toys?

Why do we think kids need so many toys? I am DONE!

When I was young we had a handful of toys and we were fine with that. It seems now that kids, mine included, have more toys then I did my entire childhood. This is what I walk downstairs too daily, it’s the play room.…

Random Toys

Personally, I think today's toys do too much. Walking through the aisles at the toys store most of the toys I see are battery operated and play music or make some sort of sound. When I was a kid, the toys we had made us use our imagination. They didn't do anything special unless we invented a story ourselves. As a parent, I try to balance the "old school" toys with the "new school" toys. The ironic thing is that at her age she easily grows tired of them.… Continue

Hmm Maybe the Play Kitchen Wasn't the Best Idea

I have been dying to get my 2 year old her play kitchen.  I LOVED my play kitchen as a child and I was so excited to buy it for her.  I heard so many mom's getting it for their kids when they were just a year old, but I didn't think it was a great gift yet....she wasn't even pretend playing until 18 months.  So I patiently waited to get it for her until her 2 yr old birthday.  It sat in boxes for three weeks in my dining room waiting to be put together.  When you have two kids close in age…

A Letter to the Liquor Store

Dear Liquor Store,

Perhaps you may have heard some rumblings about the impending summer vacation that's about to pounce on the town here any day now. Yes, kids will soon be out terrorizing the streets and pimping lemonade hardcore on every effing corner. They will be changing their clothes 357 times a day, thereby creating even more…

Aye, aye captain! Ships ahoy!

Imagine being the master of your own destiny or the captain of your own pirate ship. If you're two years old, such lofty goals might seem unreachable, that is, until you lay your eyes on a real treasure from Fisher Price.…

Get Out The Gardening Hat...It's Planting Time

The day has finally arrived I have been anticipating for eight months.  Planting day!  The planning started in February when I ordered sweet corn, and every time I drive in the driveway, I wistfully look at the barren, brown patch of dirt counting the days until spring.  A few weeks ago, Colby tilled my garden with his tractor and expanded it by 50%.

Why I LOVE Infantino Puzzles

I am always looking for puzzles and games that have educational components that my soon-to-be 4 year old will also find entertaining.  One brand that I absolutely L-O-V-E is Infantino!  I knew that they made a lot of different baby items I liked, but I had no idea they made puzzles until I found one at a local discount store.  The packaging caught my eye, with its cute little yellow box with bright pictures of the puzzle pieces on the front, and an actual puzzle piece attached to the handle. … Continue

This will be the year of the clean basement!

Welcome to 2011 - the year of the clean basement. No, seriously. I mean it this time.

See, it's not that our basement is dank and forbidding - far from it. On the contrary, it's a treasure trove guaranteed to suck you in.

If the children are there, we know we're doomed. Our oversized basement is toy central. Little toys, big toys, - toys that haven't been touched in years. But bring out that old stained, ragged bunny and my daughter clutches it to her chest like a long-lost…

Easy Bake Oven is a Hot Mess

Whoever invented the Easy Bake Oven should be forced to eat nothing but Easy Bake foods for the rest of his life. These things have been around for almost 50 years. You'd think someone would have figured out by now that it's more fun to buy some real cookie mix, bake it in the real oven, and actually eat the cookies. The stuff that comes out of that cheap plastic, light-bulb heated contraption isn't even close to food. It's like some kind of dehydrated space food from NASA.
