One of the first things my husband and I always thought of when we had the "baby talk" was how expensive babies are. How many things they need, how much it all cost, and how little money we have to buy all these things. We thought we couldn't "afford" a baby.
Wrong. Besides the basic necessities - clothes, food, car seat, diapers- babies really don't need a whole lot. The baby industry is huge, and many things are completely unnecessary. Having a baby certainly doesn't have the bank,… Continue

This blog isn't about my usual businesses. Goodness knows I need to promote them, rather about a favorite holiday. Although I haven't decorated. I am eating hard boiled eggs however....the girls decorated them. Nothing fancy, just the paas Easter egg kit, and yes we are already eating them. Do you have an Easter tradition? Share it! What else other than hiding Easter baskets. I will probably go out tonight and get some things for the girls. I tried to get the girls skates but hubby said walmart… Continue

We got a package two days ago that Landon (and I!) could not wait to open. We received two soft plush toys from the My Natural Toy line
. They are made by Hosung, the makers of miYim Organic toys
, a Brooklyn-based company that created these and many other cute, cuddly characters out of organic, environmentally friendly materials.
The frog,… Continue

1. Place hooks, shelves and other put things away spaces at eye level so your kids can easily reach them
2. Clean with your child a few times. This allows your child to learn from you what you expect “clean” to look like.
3. Make a chore chart with rewards that are meaningful to your child. And remember that stickers may be meaningful for younger kids but won’t cut the mustard with older kids. Be flexible as kids grow.
4. Limit the number of stuffed animals your child is allowed… Continue

After reading an article about the mountain of toys our children all amass, I was inspired to write an article about how I am losing the fight with noisy toys in my home! I thought they were just annoying, but after I researched this topic a little bit, I found that they can pose hearing risks for our children!

Something rather large has happened and with toy safety being such an issue I wanted to draw to your attention some news about what could happen to the makers and distributors of handmade natural toys.

Since everyone here is a mom, I thought you all would be very interested in this post.
A recent study tested 1,500 toys and found higher levels of lead, mercury and other harmful substances! And surprisingly, not all of the toys with high levels of lead were produced in China.
If you need any eco-friendly toy suggestions, check out… Continue

As a 30-something mother of two little boys, I don’t get to play with dolls very often. When I visit my neighbor who has two little girls under the age of five, I walk into a pink fantasy land of glittery, girlie wonders. Barbies, princesses, baby dolls, My Pretty Ponies, Polly Pockets - it’s awesome! Were I 20 years younger, you could never make me leave that house.
As a little girl, I loved two things. Fashion Plates and Barbies. My younger sister and I played with Fashion Plates… Continue

The problem with the rural, rural area I live is not enough nice toy stores, you know besides cheap plastic things from Walmart.
So I have found some really great natural, creative, innovative toy and book shops online. They have great stuff!
And I listed them on the undertheBIGbluesky blog today.
