Book Review: ‘Beware of the White’ by Kai Strand

This middle-grade novel was an entertaining, delightful read!

Terra is a sweet, smart girl, very close to her mom, and not what one might call popular at school. In fact, she’s often a bit bullied at times. She also suffers in silence for the death of her dad years ago.

The action begins soon after Terra’s 12th birthday, when she receives an…

Running in Circles…One 5K at a Time

Ah….the year is finally winding down, yet, I am still running in circles. Camp forms need to be completed, sneakers need to be replaced, closets need expunging, duffle bags require fumigating.   I’m a one woman show.  I amass the camp clothes, label, wash all the pool towels on a regular basis and I wonder sometimes, do my kids actually know how much behind the scenes preparation it takes just so they can have fun? The answer is a…

No Justice When It Comes to Tween Body Image

No Justice When It Comes to Tween Body Image

Like most 10-year-old girls, my daughter loves to shop at Justice. So I was flipping through the latest Justice catalog that came in the mail, and I noticed a disturbing trend. Before I point out the obvious, see if you can see what's wrong with the following…

The Substitute

On Saturday morning I took my son to the neighborhood barber for a desperately needed haircut.  After much protesting and eye-rolling, he agreed that his curly hair was out of control.  Two weeks of wrangling with it unsuccessfully was enough to get him in the chair and see if the barber could reach that happy medium between messy and controlled –…

Start Your Tween on the Right Path for Healthy Skin

When I attended MORE magazine’s Reinvention Convention this last June and heard Dr. Will Kirby speak about healthy skin (I wrote about this in an article, Ageless Skin De-Mystified), it had me wonder when I should start teaching my girls about skin care. And,…

Back to School - BillMyParents Smart Spend Card

Finally a spend-smart credit card for teenagers! When my son was 16 years old, he had an opportunity to go England and train with the coach of the Manchester United soccer team. Chase (my son, not the bank) had a bank account but due to under-18 age status, he was restricted with his ATM debit-only card which he could not use as a credit card. So, we nervously gave him cash to take with him. I bought several travel type garments (socks, money belts) in which he could hide the money. Not a great… Continue

'Tween Wolf!

http://crikeymum.blogspot.com/2010/08/tween-wolf.html

Am I the only mUm who wants to ring her 'tween' daughter's neck, because she is as annoying as an ingrown toenail?

What is it with this almost 11 year age phase that, one minute she displays the common sense of a pot plant, walking across the road without looking, and the next she's hanging out the washing unprompted? How did she go from cute…

GirlMogul.com - Boosting Tween Girls' Self-Esteem

Andrea Stein started Girl Mogul as a t-shirt company in 2007 when she realized that today’s girls needed an alternative to diva and princess tees. The company’s popular blog has since grown to become an online community dedicated to encouraging tween girls’ (ages 9 to 12) success. The site – and the community encourages our daughters to dream big and reach for the stars.

As the parent of a now 13 year old daughter, I can tell you – from very recent experience – that the tween years… Continue

Fun Fridays Should Definitely Involve Food on Your Face

Homeschool in my house revolves around two pimply faced ‘tweens. Honestly, they aren’t that pimply yet, but every day I can feel it coming. It’s like a deep, gutteral rumbling below the surface and I am bracing myself for the inevitable eruption.

With increased hormonal secretions, hygiene has become of paramount importance. I find…

Smoking Pot at 13?

Unfortunately I was head-butted into teenagedom last weekend, when my 12 year old step-son came to visit. Like already, 12? I wasn’t ready for it! Not like anyone ever is…

Him, hubby and I were sitting in the living room taking turns playing Call of Duty. He was sitting in the recliner, hubby and I were sitting on the couch together. It was step-son’s turn to play, so hubby kind of…

Tween Behavior - Say Goodbye To Your Back Talk Tween

Talking back in a rude tone, the sucking of teeth under their breath, the snide remarks when asked to do something, the snappy attitude when they have to do something they don't want to do, rolling their eyes the minute you start to talk is all bad tween behavior, with the most common being back talk. Tween back talk accompanied by a rude tone and body language has to be the single most annoying, exhausting thing parents of tweens have to put up with.… Continue

It's time to celebrate 10 years of Harry Potter. What a perfect time to get our tweens involved with this book series. Read them together and create your own family book club.

It's been over 10 years since author JK Rowling first introduced us to the

Who is this boy & what have you done with my son?

.....sometimes I don't recognise the 'alien' who has taken over my son JK’s body & walks out of his room in the mornings! One minute he was a charming, sweet, communicative, HELPFUL little boy, who worshipped & adored his mommy (sigh) & then one day....well, one day, I think aliens descended, abducted him, gave him a brain & hormone implant & sent ‘something’ back to me!

One thing that has made a huge difference to his mood… Continue

Knowledge vs Life .... Smokin zee peace pipe

When researching the top things mothers consider when picking their childs school, I came up with two equally popular subjects. Is it a school full of druggies? Is it a school full of knocked up girls? Lets start with Drugs. Parents of public schooled children didn't want there kids attending a school with a history of drug related activity. Parents of home schooled children believe they are preventing there kids from being a crack addict.

Statistically drugs are a bigger problem… Continue

Knowledge vs Life .... Meet the kid

Here is a little background on Bella. She has always been shy, a loner, teachers pet and has such determination in life you almost want to bottle it and sell it. Recently in the 6th grade she has turned into quite the chit-chatterer and social butterfly. She went from just 1 best friend for years to having a busier social calendar than I have. The girl actually took my cell phone and when the other line beeped and it was for me, she asked if I could call them back because she was on an… Continue

Knowledge vs Life .... Intro

Sorry the posts have been scanty lately. I am personally dealing with a dilemma in life, proving once again the job of a mother is never ending. Bella is entering middle school next year. The joyous 7th grade. Normally you just pre-enroll your kid in the district chosen school. Unfortunately my life never goes according to plan. My kid is a smarty pants. She is a consistent straight A student and at the end of the 5th grade got tested and put into the “gifted and talented” program. I do live in… Continue
