Schooled Too Fast

Each morning, Stephen, my baby, asks me if he has to go to school.  "Third grade is boring. We don't even do anything. We don't have enough recess. School is for attendance."  Oh, baby... you don't know boring yet, I remind.  Get dressed.  Did you eat? Get your backpack.  Do…

Packing For Tomorrow

Packing for tomorrow

Last night, the kids and I had the opportunity to pack some lunches for the West Suburban PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) organization. This non-profit agency gives emergency food and shelter to individuals and families in the West Suburban Cook County area. They operate a shelter every Tuesday night and provide lunches for the next day. There are many PADS programs available all over with some even supplying permanent housing and supportive services for their…

I WANT, I WANT, I WANT….MANNERS PLEASE

My son shouted, “I want popcorn!” I quickly responded, “Please go back into the other room and come back in here and ask me the correct way. Try again.” He obliged and returned stating, “May I have some popcorn please?” I always have to stay on him, but dog gone it, he is going to get…

When I grow up, I want to be a...

My son is practicing for his graduation. There are some songs and a skit that his class is doing, and part of the skit features the children saying what they want to be when they grow up. This is particularly funny to me, as my son changes his mind constantly:

Monday: When I grow up, I want to be a…

Make Him Crave What He Has Lost

To cut a long story short, every woman that has been dumped at least once wants to take revenge, no matter how sweet she is. Maybe you are not calling it ‘revenge’, but it certainly is. Remember how you wanted him to realize what he had lost? Note that you were probably not ready to forgive. Therefore, it was a plain desire to get back at him (and that dumb little bimbo of his). Here are a few recommendations you might find useful to fulfill your secret desire.

Dear Moms

Dear Moms,

You may be reading this on your phone in the bathroom, taking your 3 minutes of “alone” time to catch up on the world around you. You may be sneaking a peek at the park or at a red light, taking a chance to feel connected to another adult in some small…

Taking your coffee in a sippy cup

My son is not a morning person. I am fine with that. I am fine with talking gently to him in the morning, making his room brighter and even helping him get dressed on the days when he is really not into getting out of bed. I'll do whatever it takes to help him start his day.…

Baby Don't Let Go

I remember the week I brought my daughter home from the hospital. It was while I was sitting on the couch that I had my first real “moment” with her.

Now that I think back it was a fleeting moment, but I promised myself that I would never forget; times of immense happiness are somehow always neatly wrapped up and filed away in your memory.

She was sleeping, her head against my shoulder, breathing in complete rhythmic harmony; a sweet hum that filled my heart.

Her cheeks…

Japenese Tips for Tidying Up

I've spent the last week cleaning and clearing out things from both my home and my storage.  Inspired by a book I read about "tidying up" and how we cling to things we don't need for reasons hard to explain, but possible to overcome, I set out to create a home environment in which I wasn't constantly having to clean clutter every single day.

The book is a…

I don't want to be a sexy pirate

Halloween is my favorite holiday. It takes place in my favorite season, I love seeing all the children dressed up in costumes, the candy is plentiful and everyone is happy. My wonderful husband takes our son trick-or-treating and I dress up and hand out candy at the door. But here's the thing:

I don't want…

"The talk"

So I had THE question asked of me by my 6 year old daughter. You know the one, the one that turned me into a awkward and uncomfortable teenager. "Mommy, how does the baby get in a Mommy's belly?" She asks me while we are drawing at the art table. Her brothers were napping, so this Mommy and daughter bonding just took a whole big turn.

I panicked, what do I say? What is age appropriate? I want to give her the right…

Cutting the cord - one snip at a time

I'm watching the back of my son as he rides away from me. I can see him wobble a little on his bike, but the training wheels take up the slack. He starts to turn the corner and he suddenly looks very little to me. He picks up speed, as he heads down the block. He races by the fence, and is now out of my eyesight.…
