We have a ritual in our family, that after the end of the school year, J & I offer the boys a congratulatory gift. It's our way of saying thanks for doing your best in school, you're done so let's party!!!…

Ever make plans to go somewhere, and it doesn't pan out the way you expected? Yet, where you do end up ends up being some how, uh, better? Well, yesterday my sister and niece came over for a visit and our intent was to check out a car show, because car shows are cool, lol. I had no idea it was canceled, so after driving all the way there and seeing the location deserted, I had the bright idea to just go to the Marina and enjoy…Continue

HENNA BLOSSOM | a work in progress (<-- direct link to blog post)
I'm FINALLY sorting through photos from our mini vacation in Florida. After being back home for a week it already feels like ages ago. I think the weather gap makes it even more so.
One of the funny things about going through (my) photos is how many…Continue

When most people think about staying in a nice hotel, eco-friendly doesn’t exactly come to mind. Think about all the people taking hot showers, running the air conditioning in their rooms, and watching TV, not to mention washing all the towels and bedding. It’s mind boggling to think about how much energy is being used. But, believe it or not, there are hotels that not only care about offering comfortable amenities and convenience to their guests, but care about our planet as…Continue

As I sit here at a library computer typing I am thinking about how crazy the last three weeks have been while my husband has visited family in China . I am also very grateful he will be home soon and I will no longer be single handedly taking care of our three childrens. The day after Christmas my husband left to visit his family. Since then I have been trying like crazy to keep up with our three very active children. F is 8 yrs old and a loving sensitive boy. F is also very…Continue

** Men are by far THE biggest babies when they're sick.
** Taking a shower is really just a whole lotta work.
** My house looks like we had a major party here. Which would be awesome if we'd had a major party here.

** Seeing his grandma in the buff apparently doesn't phase my son in the least.
** Hot flashes and sea sickness don't mix well with a pirate ship cruise.
** And just because it's a "pirate" cruise does not mean that Johnny Depp…Continue

Last week, we took our official annual family camping trip. Each summer, we take one trip to a California State Park that I deem “official”because it is with kids and without cell phones, laptops, or iPods. The only media we allow are cameras and Kindles (for capturing memories, and because we can keep all our books in one place). What I discovered on this trip was that three days of no Facebook updates, no check-ins, no Tweets and no notifications can actually be…Continue

Wooo! Lucas and I are home after seven days in the Sunshine State. We had such a great time, and seeing my mom again was like surfacing for air. It had been too long. It will always be too long. …Continue

** Just so we're clear, I will still drink the wine if a fruit fly lands in my glass.
** The end of the school year is when all the crap that's been shoved into a tiny desk for nine months suddenly makes its way into your kitchen (or your trash).
** My son thinks I grew up in the early 1900's. Awesome.

I normally do these "reflective" kind of posts on Fridays, but I was just too swept up in Paradise last week to sit down and really use my brain for anything productive. But now that I've been sucker-punched by reality once again, I decided to look back on the finer things I discovered on our family vacation....
** Every day should end in a…Continue

My husband threw me for a loop with his question. "What do you want to do over spring break?" he asked.
Um, what? Spring break? He had to be kidding. I'm still packing away the last of the Christmas decor - just last week I found a stray box of hooks on a bookshelf. Surely it can't be time to plan for a spring vacation already.
Besides, I still have the vacation pamphlets I picked up last spring - you know, the one for bicycle rentals, the one for that…Continue

My family has always been cottage-goers. Growing up, a few relatives had cottages, but one in particular had very special memories, and always felt like home.
My Aunt and Uncle owned a small cottage on a quiet little bay. It wasn't anything extravagant, but I have some of the best memories of my childhood from up there. This cottage sat on a small cliff with about 50 stairs…Continue

I have never been a world traveler. I’ve only ever left the country to go to Canada, didn’t go to Walt Disney World until I was 19 years old, flew once on an airplane when I was 2 years old and not again until I was 24, and I have never been on the West Coast.
I can still remember those random winter days when we would gather for a family meeting to discuss where we wanted to go for our family vacation. Being the ten year old history buff I was, I always suggested colonial…Continue

** My kids wait to take a dump until it's time to walk out the door.
** This ass isn't gonna run itself off.
** You can never ever hug your kids too much.
