When did Lego sets turn violent?

When my son was born, he received a couple of LEGO sets. Even though he wouldn't be able to play with them for years, family and friends knew that my husband was a big LEGO fan and were certain that my son would be one, too.…

Book Review: Just Beneath The Surface By R.H. Ramsey

I just finished reading “Just Beneath the Surface” by R. H. Ramsey.  This book is rated for a mature audience and shouldn’t be read by someone under the age of 18 due to the graphic nature of this book.  This book was full of twists and turns and there was never a dull moment. This book is filled with suspense, drama, and action that will leave you wanting to read more.

I want to thank Rhonda for giving me the opportunity to review her book.  While this is a fiction…

Coping With Sandy Hook

Like every other parent in America, I sent my kids off to school yesterday morning with a giant lump in my throat.  The horrific events of Friday's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School were at the forefront of my mind as I hugged each of my twins as tightly as I could.  A small part of me even wished they were sick so they could stay safe at home with me.  However,…

Temporary stay at home mom, and that's ok with me.

Two kids, two stints as a temporary stay at home mom….otherwise known as maternity leave.  My second “vacation” as many ignorant people around me prefer to call my time off is coming to a close.  Back to being a slave to the man next week.  I have mixed emotions.  I love my children.  I have…

Domestic Violence: Happy Birthday Desirae

Today would have been the 16th birthday of my oldest niece. On February 4th 2010, her and her mother were killed in a case of domestic violence

by the man her mother had been married to for almost 10 years. Because

of this man's actions, my brother is without his daughter, children are

without their mother, I am without my niece, and on and on and on.

Tragedies like this one are so far reaching, I'm not sure we can ever

know the full impact of what… Continue

Should children be taught how to use a gun?

About a month ago we were shocked to hear a story about an eight year old being charged with the shooting death of his father and another man.

Yesterday in Arizona, coincidentally, the same state as the eight year old, a 12-year-old boy who fatally shot his mother after an argument over his chores was found guilty of premeditated murder.

Prosecutors proved the boy acted intentionally and with premeditation when he shot hos mother eight times on August 1st. Mother and son… Continue

In America Rates At Which Batterers Get Custody (75%)

Rates At Which Batterers Receive Custody

by Joan Meier, Esq.

One statement in Breaking the Silence: Children's Voices that has provoked controversy was my statement that "the studies are showing" that up to 2/3 of accused or adjudicated batterers receive joint or sole custody in court. While no empirical study can definitively determine a universal statistical rate, the key point is that the research consistently shows that accused and adjudicated batterers receive joint or sole… Continue

The Making of the Documentary Small Justice

Diane Hofheimer, a paralegal and child advocate, handed me the VHS tape with a warning: The video would chill me to the bone. She told me itshowed a three-year-old girl clinging to a banister, begging not to be sent to live with her father. As Diane explained, a family court judge had awarded custody of this little girl to her dad despite evidence that he had sexually abused her. The thought of this made my skin crawl… Continue

RE: The American PBS Documentary "Breaking The Silence The Childrens Stories"

What Breaking the Silence Means

By Dominique Lasseur

Documentary film producer Dominique Lasseur set out to explore the failures of the family court system in "Breaking the Silence: Children's Stories." But when public television broadcast the program in the fall of 2005, the father's rightsmovement was quick to react with scathing criticism and a deluge of viewer complaints. What compelled you to take on this issue? We didn't set out to produce a piece about custody issues. We… Continue

Custodians of Abuse

by Kristen Lombardi

IF YOU'RE A PARENT, it's your worst nightmare: finding out that your child is being molested — by your spouse. If you seek a divorce as a result, or are already going through one when you make the discovery, you hope that family court will do the right thing: grant you sole legal and physical custody of your child. In fact, you can't even imagine that there could be any other outcome in the custody judgment. But for many… Continue
