Like many couples, my husband and I moved in together before getting married. And we actually lived together for more than a decade before saying our vows. We wanted to be sure about our choice to remain together. (Absolutely sure.) And to this day, I am glad that we put in all that time before we tied the knot. We know each other on every level and I believe that it made the "hard" years of marriage (the first year after saying "I do,"…Continue

When I left the family nest to get settled into my first job, my Mom gave me some advice. She told me some things about my paycheck and finances, she gave me a few words of wisdom when dealing with my coworkers and when I got frustrated with that job, she told me to stick with it until I found something new.…Continue

At 5 pm, I have been working for eight and a half hours. I probably don't even know what time it is. In fact, I am probably in a meeting, since I work for a bicoastal company and it is only 2 pm on the other coast. (That tends to be a popular meeting time.)
By 5:14, I am trying very hard to focus on whatever…
I am spoiled. For several years I worked with my husband at the same company, and now we work only a few blocks apart. This means that I am used to being able to have lunch with my wonderful husband on a frequent basis and that neither of us has to go out of our way to spend time together in the middle of the day.…Continue

I have a day off soon. I am not going on any trips or spending time with friends or traveling somewhere fun. I am not doing anything but sitting still, ignoring all chores, and enjoying the idea that no one needs me. And I am crazy excited about it.…

In a former job, I used to have a mean boss. The kind of boss who would tear you down in public, make you feel worthless and mock you if you went to your car during lunch to have a little cry. My coworkers and I became adept at figuring out her triggers and avoiding them wherever possible. Some days we spent more time at work analyzing how she would react to something than doing our jobs. That was the least productive I've ever…Continue

Being a stay-at-home mom can be more time-consuming than the job you held before the children arrived.

This week is a busy week for me. My kids finish school tomorrow. The next day – Wednesday – is the first official day of summer break for them and then I leave for a work conference on Thursday. My younger two kids do not particularly love when I travel for work, so last year around this time when I left for…Continue

A woman in my office took off one Friday, and at about 9:30 am, I received an email from her. She wasn't showing as online, but she was definitely answering emails. I wrote her back, told her she was busted and reminded her that she was supposed to be off.
I get it: Sometimes it is hard to unplug from the…

This is sooo very cool. I've been doing it since January for Purina, Dollar General, Oil of Olay, NutriSystem, Samsung, Crest and Braun. Why not get paid for something you like to do, right? The joy is you get to do it from the comfort of your own home too.
I've been working with IZEA since the beginning of January advertising and have been paid already for the brand names I mentioned above to post and tweet. All I have to do is bid on their job and I just paid $5.00 up front to…Continue

We fight for a fair maternity leave, and a supportive work environment tooth and nail. We do so because we deserve to have a balance between family life and work. If the organizations themselves were aware of the benefits of maternity leave to the organization itself, I think the battle would get much easier. Not only does maternity leave benefit the organization, it also "greatly" benefits the economy. …Continue

I have really been in a funk lately. My mind has been a whirlwind of emotions & thoughts. Ever since my youngest, my baby, turned 4years old I have been giving myself a hard time. I feel this pressure, entirely from myself, but pressure no less, to work. Not that I don’t work now, in fact I feel like this is the hardest I have ever worked in my life! My husband and I are a bit old school. He works outside the home. I do all the household chores, all things clothes and food…Continue

I have never been a model employee. From the age of 14 until I was 25, I've held around 12 jobs (I may be forgetting a couple). In each and every one of these positions, I would show up to work and do my job with one foot out the door. When I worked at Wal-Mart, I was forever filling up receipt tape with random notes to myself. Story ideas, song lyrics, scraps of poetry, random observations. I'd watch the customers for inspiration for character's that I would one day write about. I'd…Continue
