Imagine a lovely mom n’ pop restaurant on a beachy island. Perfect ambiance, honest food, good service. It’s also the last day of your family vacation, so you’re looking forward to a little celebrating at the dinner table.
The tomatoes on the salad are ruby-red and farm-fresh, the newly baked brown bread steams with delight, the shrimp are gianormous and cooked perfectly and the crab bisque….ahh, that sensuous, mouth-watering, swooningly-delicious fresh soup. All is peaceful…Continue

Recently we had some powerful storms rip through the area, causing widespread blackouts. Contrary to popular belief, losing electricity isn’t all that bad. Depending on how long it’s lost for, of course!
Some of the "upsides" to going without power I found were:

This summer, I'm taking another round of "swimming" classes with my toddler. For her, it's a way to get comfortable in the water; I know she will not master the art of the backstroke but she will learn to float on her back.
But for me, it's a lesson on what not to wear, what to bring and what to really do in the water with my tot! (Yes moms and dads, if you want your child to blow bubbles in the pool then you too must insert face in water!)

Recently, my blog partner (Yin Mama) & I got into a conversation about leg hair. Mo'Nique's appearance at the various movie award shows sparked the topic. Mo'Nique doesn't shave her legs and is not embarassed to wear outfits that show off her legs. She's not the first, nor the last. But in our culture, leg hair is a definate no-no for women.

Recently I discovered an indoor play area where for $2, my toddler can run around an indoor gym to her heart's content. Toys are everywhere, as are other little people. For two entire hours, she gets to wear herself out and I get to chat with other adults. I've added it to our weekly roster of "mommy groups" and it's bliss for us both!
But before I had my daughter, I completely poo-pooed indoor gyms and mommy groups. Boy has my mind changed! Come check out my latest blog and…Continue

Yin Mama, my blogging partner, works outside the home (I work at home, a paradox discussed in an earlier post,"Role Reversal, How Green Is It on the Other Side"). Lately Yin's been wondering if she's not actually working at a daycare center, rather than in a high-octane marketing office. The childr...I mean, adults, she works with are beginning to fall into some childlike…Continue

Why is it that kids will happily gorge themselves on ice cream, candy, or gooey-cheesy things but turn their little button noses up at salads, lentils or other nutritious-from-the-garden-foods? I know the scientific and biological reasons, as well as understanding that some parents are in a perpetual survival mode with their kids when it comes to their diets. But as a self-proclaimed foodie, I want to expose my little one to all the flavors the world has to offer. Bit by bit, of…Continue
