Okay, so is it okay that my favorite is Little Patient Big Doctor? I'm a bit partial since I wrote it. Though to be honest it's taken me a while to make that statement. I'm not one of those people who think that just because I did it -…Continue

Let’s think about this for a minute. Balancing by its nature is risky business. Tightrope walkers balance, gymnasts balance, window washers balance. This isn’t for everyone. Sure most…Continue

I'm a real mom. I have 5 kids and 1 husband. I am an attorney. I teach. I volunteer. I just wrote a book and so now I'm on the speaking circuit too.
How do I balance it all? You want the simple trick so that you can do it too? The answer of the right combination of organizational skills, know how, and tricks of the trade? You too can become…Continue

Guys, I don't know about you but I miss blogging. I really didn't have time to do this over the summer. Now that school has started and the kids are back in their groove, I can get back to it. Connecting with all of you - even though I have no idea who you are really makes a difference. I think blogging is about reaching out to other moms and sharing our thoughts and experiences.

I do my own research and I think it's high time that doctors get used to us doing this.
Doctors need to adjust to a reality that patients are actively engaging in their own care and should be treated as partners in their care. This means that at times the doctor may disagree with a patient's diagnoses and prognosis. Well as partners do, then the…Continue

I love all the contests that are out there on Mother's Day. Here's the question: Do you feel luckier and are we actually luckier this day over others? I think that if we feel we are lucky, we do get luckier. I know this sounds a bit far fetched but hear me out. When you don't feel like you have any luck, do you even try? I don't. I just don't even bother giving anything a try. But when I feel lucky, I try my luck and you know what? Sometimes I win. That's my take. What's…Continue

Let me share with you what I heard when I walked into a doctor’s office.
“But Doctor, isn’t there anything I can do to help Ethan overcome his…Continue

What’s this approach? It’s a combination of two things: attitude and know how.

That’s right. We can reduce stress by attacking everything. I’ll get to that in a minute. First, here’s how I see it. I love going to the doctor for - you name it headache, backpain, stomach issues, skin issues- with the diagnosis that it’s all due to stress.
What is this catch all our doctors like to use? “Stress.” It seems to describe and explain everything. Usually, we deal with it by treating the symptom. Take a pill for the…Continue

I Am. I say short books rule. I've never understood people who pick up a 700 page book with gusto. What are they thinking? That's hours of time with eyes glued on print. I get it, the story can be amazing and transfer you to an incredible place. I just don't think that I have the stamina to go there. Do me a favor and turn that book into 5 different books and I'll bet more people would gladly pick it up.
I've recently discovered…Continue

Thank you to each of the mom bloggers out there who I don't know but together create a community of support. My story and Little Patient Big Doctor is profiled today on CNN.com. Part of the reason is the positive community of support we give each other. Seeing each of you succeed gives me strength to believe that my…Continue
I'm so excited. My son is allergic to so many things and we've been through the wringer with him but he's doing so well. So, I wrote Little Patient Big Doctor: One Mother's Journey to share what we did that helped him so that other families can be helped also. I never imagined that writing the book would lead to radio interviews and interacting with so many wonderful people with such a wealth of knowledge. Here is a…Continue

Ready for this? I don't think that it is a school's responsibility to be nut free. I don't think airlines should be mandated to keep peanuts off a plane. I don't think it should be mandatory for restaurants to provide nut-free options or for that matter, egg free, dairy free, soy free or anything else- to which all my son is allergic. It's my issue and my responsibility.
It's certainly greatly appreciated and an act of goodwill when schools, airlines, restaurants and…Continue

Okay, so I encourage the importance of a partnership between doctors and patients. I figure if we can talk to our doctors, he'll know better what's going on with us and we'll better understand what he wants from us. We'll also be able to work together if we have all kinds of other ideas we're thinking of trying that he may not suggest- like using olive oil for that dry scalp instead of a medicated shampoo.
But could this closeness hurt the doctor? Go with me for a second.…Continue

Okay, this has to be one of the most important skills parents have up their sleeve. I have a child with asthma. In my case it's vital. If a kid panics, things just escalate out of control. So, any tricks we teach our children to stay calm can be life saving. You can read all about that in my book Little Patient Big Doctor.
Even if you are not dealing with asthma but have a child who is stuck on top of…Continue

Sounds like the answer to that is YES according to Newsweek's latest article: Why Almost Everything You Hear About Medicine is Wrong. It seems that over 50% of all studies that come out ultimately are proven false. So that means that more than half the time, your doctor has no idea what he is talking about - but here's the kicker- HE THINKS HE DOES- which makes…Continue
