A Birthday Wish

A Birthday Wish

A few years ago, when my oldest turned four, I wrote him a little letter that turned out to be incredibly popular with my readers.

Two years later, for his sixth, I wrote him another…

The Kim K Barbie

I'm a recovering Barbie-addict. I played with them until I was like 16, and I still would if I didn't have all boys. I'm a little burnt out on trucks, pirates and Spiderman, so anytime we're at someone's house and they have little girls, I'll immediately wonder if they have Barbies. I even have a method:

  • I'll make eye contact with the girl. Whether she's across the room or simply in the seat next to me, eye contact will be…

Veteran Moms Needed

I'll admit it: There are worse things in life than a 5 year-old boy who loves to be with his mommy. Like famine, disease, another Kardashian reality show...But I really can't take it anymore, and I need some insight as to how I should deal with the obsession attention. (Before you go on, yes I know this won't last forever and yes I know there will be a day when I'll miss this, but for the sake of my sanity I must have coping mechanisms.)

When I leave the room for…

Parents Stopping Puberty So Child Can Pick Gender

There's a couple in California who want their pre-teen to pick his/her own sex. Yes, you read that correctly. At present, the child is being pumped full of hormone blockers to delay puberty until he/she decides which gender path to choose. Once that decision is made, hormones will be given to start puberty. … Continue

Channel One and Your Schools

Channel One News  is a 'school-safe' news channel which informs teens on current world events and pop culture. It's free to schools, which means it's funded by a lot (LOT) of advertising. Earlier today I posed as an interested parent wanting to get Channel One in my school district. The reps at Channel One were very helpful, and informed me that they have many new things coming, including an interactive model geared towards grades as young…

The Mind of A Mother

Sometimes I wonder if I had enough time to keep a journal, what it would read like. Going one step further, what would it read like if I waxed Virginia Woolf and wrote in narrative mode, penning whatever dialogue I had with myself. Would I share such thoughts with people I knew? People I didn't know? Would I risk being committed to a psychiatric facility for the sake of  my blog?

What the hell; I like living on the…

She Must Beat Them

I'd like to think I have a handle on my kids. Sure, there are the occasional outbursts in public, sometimes so unbelievable that I pretend I'm the nanny, but for the more manageable ones I'm not opposed to public time outs and major ultimatums. ("If you don't knock it off I'm going to throw all of your toys away when we get home.")

But I'd say that more times than not, I'm in…

Focker Me

Yesterday, my 5 year old had one of his best little buddies over to play. While his mom and I chatted upstairs, we suddenly noticed that it was far too quiet. With the bedroom door closed and behind it three rambunctious boys, we looked at each other with raised eyebrows and wondered.

But one thing led to another, and we forgot about checking on it. When my girlfriend and her son left, I turned to G.

"So, G, did you have fun?"

"Yup." He nodded, munching on a…

Playboy Bunnies, Slutty Nicole Sherzinger, and Your Kids

When someone thinks of feminism, I'm sure Playboy immediately comes to mind. Forget birth control, suffrage, and equal pay; true liberation is found in deep cleavage and nude centerfolds. Right?

NBC is bringing this glitter to the public airwaves as part of their Fall 2011 lineup. The polemic is that the show will demoralize women by casting them in a meaty light. But NBC prez …

French Vogue Model: Bait For Pedophiles?

Ok, stay with me. I know that blog title was pretty heavy-hitting, but just take a look at the spread of the baby model in French Vogue.  Comment dite vous PEDOPHILE ALERT en francais?

I'm not sure how the Parisian family court operates, but I'm sort of hoping someone is sent over to the parents' home to do a little Q&A. Like,… Continue

The Breast Milk Doll: Ick

There's a Spanish-made doll out there that helps little girls simulate nursing. It's called "The Breast Milk Baby". There's bra type 'bib' girls put over their shirts which has little flower-shaped petals the baby doll can suckle. And suckle it does. There's an audible "sloop sloop sloop" sound the doll makes; and then mommy (in this case a 4 year-old mommy) can burp her fed baby.

Teen Choice Awards Honors: Murder, Sex, Drugs & Hookers

The Teen Choice Awards airs this Sunday on Fox. I can't think of a show less appropriately titled than this one. Almost every one of the movie nominations are rated "R". I understand the whole "pushing the envelope" thing in the entertainment industry, but I really don't know why Nickelodeon (parent company: Viacom) keeps forcing adult content down the throats of kids.

Oh wait, yes I do. Advertising revenue. Instead of an awards show with commercials and product placement geared… Continue

Katy Perry + Smurfs = ?

The Smurfs premiered this past Friday with $36.2 million dollars in ticket sales. I haven't yet seen the movie, but I plan to. It sounds like a cute revisit to my 1980's childhood, where Saturday morning channels rotated between Smurfette, the Care Bears and Fat Albert. And when I say "rotated", I mean that literally. We didn't have remote controls.…

Jenny McCarthy, I Bless You

So the web is on fire with Jenny's recent Tweet of her larger-than-normal pregnant self. In an age where pregnant celebs look at 38 weeks what I did at say, 9 weeks, it's so refreshing to see Jenny make no apologies for a ginormous belly and double chin.

But…

Amy Winehouse: No Wake Up Call Made

"Dead at 27." Sadly, this is a line I've read in a Hollywood obit one too many times. Amy Winehouse and her low, sultry voice and gloppy style left a legacy of drugs, alchoholism, and little more. Before you read on (or click off), let me assure you this post is not about the sadness of her death. I won’t even touch on the eerie similarities between Winehouse and Joplin. Not only would I sound like every other blog out there, it would be entirely disingenuous. Of course it's…

Two and a Half Men

A lot of the work I do at the PTC is centered around advertiser accountability. Specifically, the companies who support Two and a Half Men.  With Ashton Kutcher replacing Charlie Sheen, whose recent antics award him the Biggest Moron on the Face of the Earth trophy ("winning!" "tiger blood!" the "… Continue
