Life Changes I Wish I’d Made Sooner

By the time I turned 25, I was sure my life was a single-lane highway.

A single-lane highway with no exits. As far as I was concerned, I was headed in the same direction, with no…

There’s something about the summer that brings out the fun in kids. Long summer days without any thought of school foster the type of carefree living children relish every year. The only bad thing about the summer is it can go by really fast. As parents, it is important to…

10 Fun Summer Activities to Enjoy with Your Kids in NC

If your kids aren't headed off to summer camp this year, you might be stumped as to what to possibly do to keep them entertained and keep you sane. And unfortunately where I live, fun, cultural and educational activities are rare jewels, so we typically have to venture off at least an hour to enjoy ourselves. But don't be discouraged if you live in Small Town, NC like me; North Carolina is chock full of other destinations that are well worth the travel time. I've…

Hold Fast to Dreams, Pursuit of Joy - Mom. Life. Love.

Hold fast to dreams

For if dreams die

Life is a broken-winged bird

That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams

For when dreams go

Life is a barren field

Frozen with snow.

A poem by the great Langston Hughes.…

Chocolate Banana Peanut Butter Smoothie Recipe

I'm not a breakfast person. I generally hate eggs, and usually anything I eat early in the morning disagrees with my tummy. I have found, though, that smoothies work well for me in the morning. Really anytime. Plus they are quick and convenient and give me the energy I need to get from one task to the next. I wanted to share with you my Chocolate Banana Peanut Butter Smoothie recipe made with almond milk, instead of dairy milk, which is much easier on me. At 294 calories (calculated with…

Parent Involvement is a Must

With my oldest child finishing up the 2nd grade school year, I've been a little reflective on my involvement in his school life and wondering why more parents aren't actively involved.  My experience with my son's charter school this year has been rocky to say the least, and has forced me to make the decision to find a new school -- more on that in another post.  My 8-year-old son, Cameron, is a straight "A" student, never had a single bad behavior report and is loved by all the staff and…

As a single mom of two, there were a lot of things about life and motherhood that I learned the hard way. There are many moments I'd love to be able to go back and redo, and there are times when I look back at moments that…

Prints and Patterns for Kids

Prints are in. From florals, to tribal, to art deco and more, prints are as hot as ever. And I love it! The best thing is that prints aren't just reserved for adults. Designers are harping on the trend and making wonderful clothing for your little ones!  After the jump are a few of my favorites.

Swim Lessons Could Save Your Child's Life

Whether or not your child is destined to be the next Michael Phelps, learning to swim is an important part of summer safety. Consider these sobering statistics:

  • I in 5 people who drown are children under the age of 14. For every 1 child who drowns, 4 more are treated for submersion injuries and many result in permanent brain…

Breaking Free From the 9 to 5: The Vision

I was a bill collector in my former life. Well, not really in my former life, but just a few months ago.

I remember sitting in my cubicle, calling and awaiting calls, day in and day out, wondering how I got myself into this rut. I fought back tears every time I left my house to commute to work, knowing I'd be missing out on almost every important part of…
