No Justice When It Comes to Tween Body Image
Like most 10-year-old girls, my daughter loves to shop at Justice. So I was flipping through the latest Justice catalog that came in the mail, and I noticed a disturbing trend. Before I point out the obvious, see if you can see what's wrong with the following… Continue

To all of you nostalgic saps who are mourning the potential death of the Twinkie, I offer the following quiz:
How many Twinkies have you actually consumed in the past month? (NOTE: You should not count this week when the world decided that Twinkies were edible again.)
- If your answer is more than 10: How old are you, and how high is your body mass index?
- If your answer is between one and nine: Really? You…

A new study has found that women who co-sleep with their babies are possibly more prone to stress than those who don't.
I co-slept with both of my kids, and I could not disagree more.
According to a Fox News article, "Breastfeeding and co-sleeping with baby affects mom's welfare," the study followed 195 women in a Chicago suburb for six months… Continue

My husband made the greatest purchase of our lives last weekend when he found this Pokemon Monopoly game at a garage sale for a dollar.
Did you catch that? It's a Monopoly game about POKEMON!! And my kids are only ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED with… Continue

My daughter had a friend sleep over the other night. I'm not a big fan of sleepovers, so we don't do them very often. But this girl is one of my favorites of S's friends. We'll call her Peggy. She's a nice girl, low maintenance, no drama. It's hard to find those qualities in a 10-year-old girl nowadays.
Peggy brought a large bag of leftover Halloween candy with her. We were going to the movies, so her mom let her bring the candy to take with us. She also proceeded to eat a… Continue

My 8-year-old son had an eye doctor's appointment today. He wears glasses, and he has not been able to see as well as he should, so I took him in to get a new prescription for some new glasses.
We saw a new doctor that we hadn't seen before. He seemed nice enough, but when the doctor put that refractor machine over M's face (the one with all the lenses that looks like a pair of space-aged binoculars), things got a bit wonky.…

It was Saturday morning, so after a long, stressful week I was looking forward to taking a run around the block. By "run" I mean "mostly walk," but I managed to break into a slow jog a couple of times along the way. (I'm not much of a runner. My theory is that my ancestors were royalty from England, so it is not in my blood to be active or athletic in any way. But I occasionally attempt some sort of physical activity in order to avoid dropping dead of a laziness-induced heart… Continue

The "Too Cute" series on Animal Planet is one of my favorite shows to watch with my 10-year-old daughter because it's, well, cute! I consider it one of the few "safe" programs to watch with kids because it's pretty wholesome and innocent.
If you've never seen the show, it consists of close-ups of fuzzy baby creatures doing adorable things such as falling down, rolling over, and getting stuck in silly places. Most of the time, it follows a litter of kittens or puppies from birth to… Continue

My 8-year-old son has mild Asperger's, which often results in "sticky" thoughts and vocal tics. By "sticky" thoughts I mean these obsessive ideas that he just can't get past. For instance, if he forgets to watch a favorite TV show, he will whine, complain, and cry about it for hours afterward. The thought gets "stuck" in his head.
He is very aware of this problem, and when I say, "Is your brain sticky today, Buddy?" he'll say, "Yes, but I can't help it!"
As a result of the… Continue

In recent years I've realized that my husband and I have entered the ”golden years” of parenting. The kids are no longer babies, but they haven't yet reached teenage hell. They play independently, they bathe themselves, and they know how to use the toilet. As a result, we get to have intelligent conversations with them, play complex games with them, and even teach them to get their own drinks and snacks. It's a glorious time to be a parent!
Unfortunately, the ”golden years” are not… Continue

My daughter was diagnosed with asthma when she was 3 years old. It has never been serious and only seems to flare up when she gets sick. She has only had one real asthma "attack" in which she felt she couldn't breathe and we had to give her the albuterol rescue inhaler. The other times have just been nonstop coughs and wheezing.
The doctors keep telling us she should outgrow it, but every time we think we're done with her asthma she gets another cough that brings that dreaded inhaler… Continue

This picture may look like a silly Saturday morning pillow fight, but it's actually a great treatment I've discovered for my son's sensory processing issues. Miles just turned 7, and the older he gets the more concerned I've become about his developmental problems. I can't get any help from his school or our insurance company,… Continue

It is now 10 p.m. on Sunday evening. I have officially been "disconnected" for 24 hours, and I am ready to once again join the virtual world.
In case you missed my previous post
, I was inspired by the Australian mom who made her family disconnect from all electronic devices for six months. So I made my family unplug for one day. We were not allowed to watch TV, play video games or use the computer all day. I… Continue

I read a news article last week about an Australian mom who forced her family to “unplug” from all electronic devices for six months. The mom, a professional writer named Susan Maushart, has three teenagers. She banned the Internet, cell phones, iPods, television and video games. She even wrote a book about the experience cleverly titled “… Continue

It was the biggest snowstorm our area had seen in more than two decades. Nearly a foot of snow had already piled up by the time we woke up the morning after Christmas, and the snow continued throughout the day. We were… Continue

Whoever invented the Easy Bake Oven should be forced to eat nothing but Easy Bake foods for the rest of his life. These things have been around for almost 50 years. You'd think someone would have figured out by now that it's more fun to buy some real cookie mix, bake it in the real oven, and actually eat the cookies. The stuff that comes out of that cheap plastic, light-bulb heated contraption isn't even close to food. It's like some kind of dehydrated space food from NASA.
Here is my… Continue

It was a snowy morning at the bus stop, and the grass was wet and icy. So I told the kids to stay out of the grass and stand on the street so their shoes wouldn't get wet. For reasons I will never understand, Miles decided to take this directive as a challenge. He looked right at me… Continue
