Sparkly: I wore it Saturday night

Last week ended on a tense note, so Ben and I snuck out for a quick drink and a few moments alone on Saturday night. We deserved this time together. Actually, if we’re going to be fair about it, we deserved a trip to Europe but I’m grateful for anytime alone.

We didn’t go anywhere fancy. Still, I wanted to take it up a notch so I wore this necklace, which had belonged to my Granny Bea.… Continue

Pretty, petite sociopaths bullied me...Thanks for the memories "ladies" {snort}

I was bullied and run out of school when I was 11 years old. It was horrible. So horrible that I’ve made a conscientious effort to stuff my feelings good and down ever since. Then the recent stories about kids and online/offline bullying and the tragic consequences began running rampant through the media, and all those suppressed feelings resurfaced. That’s just great. Twenty-five, perfectly good years of denying my feelings, and…

I say we quit keeping dental floss on the piano. WHO'S WITH ME?

Years ago when I was just a girl, my dad bought a grand piano. A BRAND NEW GRAND PIANO. We’re talking about a man who has dental work done without the benefit of Novocain just to save a few bucks. I imagine the first time he passed on the the analgesic, the dentist nodded understandingly, opened up my dad's medical file, and then scratched FREAK across his patient information form.… Continue

Burial plots...you don’t buy a starter plot and then trade up to a larger plot located in a better school district.

A couple weekends ago, we went to my cousin’s house for his son’s second birthday party. They served us a nice lunch buffet, and I have to tell you when we first walked into the house, the BBQ aroma from the kitchen felt like a big, welcoming pork hug. If they made them, I’d buy a meat-scent Glade Air Freshener. I don’t usually use air fresheners, but a Glade ‘meat’ Pluggin? I could totally get with that.… Continue

These were the photos before...

I’m going to try something new every month and show you the “before” pictures I use in my monthly banners [I may come to regret those words]. It’s fairly obvious these banner photos are retouched, dipped in varnish remover and then spray-coated, but just the same, you’ll get a gauge of Photoshop's capabilities. Mkay, here we go… Continue

IKEA hangover

We ditched most of our kitchen stuff before we moved to Mexico, and have been eating off of mismatched plates and drinking out of plastic cups since we got back. A year ago. I know, the horror, right?

So yesterday, I decided to drag the kids to IKEA and pick-up some basic white plates and other random stuff. Since I’ve lost my grip at IKEA before and have ended up with a trunk full of EKBY GRUVAN shelves [which never made it out of the… Continue

Bikini Wars: Kate Gosselin VS Me [Alternate title: This is why women HATE themselves]

Sooooo, yesterday I opened my big mouth and told you I’d be posting before and after bikini photos of myself today. Then I pressed ‘publish,’ had a small aneurysm, and fell under my desk. Anyway, you’ve probably checked out the photos by now so let me get right to the point before my in-laws call and beg me to drop my married name from this blog.… Continue

This, in lieu of a mudroom [Alternate title: How to scare off a producer at The Nate Berkus Show]

Ben and I spent a good chunk of our weekend purchasing storage containers and dumping the contents of our bedroom closets into the center of the room. You guys, our marriage? What can I say? David Copperfield called, and he wants his magic back.

I also cleaned and organized Whitney and Heidi’s room. I placed four Rubbermaid bins outside their door and labeled them: Keep, Donate, Toss, and Send Out for… Continue

Anxiety is good. Put down your Xanax.

I haven’t been to the dentist in four years. Now, I realize some of you just read that sentence and went slack-jawed and wide-eyed as if I told you I grind up puppies in a food mill. I’m quite aware that in some social circles, missing four years of dental appointments is akin to setting libraries on fire. But in my defense, I don’t particularly care for dental exams, which I feel is reason enough to let my teeth rot-out. That, and my mom is… Continue

How mocking and judging others has made our marriage stronger

We’ve recently introduced a new show into our TV watching repertoire called Surviving the Cut. We happened by this show somewhat unintentionally, since I had initially mistook it for some kind of reality-dance-audition-series. I’d DVR’d it, anticipating an hour of leg warmers and men in butt-tight, cutoff sweat pants rolled up into their nether regions. But instead of watching some coked-up choreographer shouting, ‘People...and five, six, seven, eight...!’ we ended up watching US… Continue

A Priest, a Rabbi and an Imam Walk into a Bar

You’ve heard those jokes before. The jokes that start out with religious leaders walking into a bar and end in some off-color punchline revolving around body parts or selling hair, right? O.K., maybe those aren’t the most common punchlines, but it’s not like I’m really listening anyway, since I can never get past the idea of religious clerics [often of, at times, estranged religions] spending cocktail hour together. Because wouldn’t it be world altering if religious leaders… Continue

New earrings. And a plan?

I picked up these earrings a few weeks ago at The Limited while Lexi and I were out school shopping. They were on sale for $6.99, which I easily covered with the $23.00 of The Limited in-store credit I’d been carrying around in my wallet for the last ten years. TEN years. I can only imagine the look on Whitney’s teacher’s face if I were to mention that, I know I promptly misplaced that bright, yellow…

Hiding in a closet for two hours isn’t as fun as it sounds

Have I ever told you the story about the time I hid in Ben’s roommate’s closet for two hours white knuckling a baseball bat? Anyone [pause], anyone remember...no? Because I’d hate to repeat myself and risk sounding like a nagger. A repeater is like a nagger, and no one likes a nagger, however, sometimes a nagger must repeatedly remind a certain somebody to buy lemons on his way home because the last time a certain somebody wasn’t nagged at, the… Continue

First day of school pictorial. Almost rated R.

We were all up earlier than...well, you'd just hate me if I told you the last time we were up early enough to watch the 'Wake-Up' news. What can I say? Our kids don't wake-up before 8 a.m. And I realize mentioning this is a little like skinny people complaining that they can't keep the weight on and don't workout, and they eat whatever it is their little hearts desire. So yes, my kids are good sleepers. However, I can't consumer dubious… Continue

I wet myself, and six people on Facebook "Liked" it

I’d forgotten how much easier a summer without a child in diapers can be. I imagine this also applies to diaper wearing adults, as well. Not trying to deny any one particular groups’ hardships here, I just don’t know any diaper wearing adults. As far as I know, my friends and family all enjoy control of their bladders and colons. And chances are when one of them becomes incontinent, they’ll update their Facebook profile status to...… Continue

So my kid needs a real estate attorney

Whitney starts kindergarten next week, and in preparation for the big day the kindergartners practiced riding the bus, with a parent, to and from school. So yesterday morning, Whitney and I climbed on the bus and road to her new school where we met her teachers, but more importantly for Whitney, she got to fill her cubby with school supplies. Her own little piece of real estate. I think I’ll start telling people my four year old successfully… Continue

From Dallas with Love...and adorable bracelets!

Lexi just got back from Dallas where she spent a week and a half with her Opa and Oma. If you have someone who’s offering to take your preteen for an extended period of time, I highly encourage you to take them up on that offer. As in, drop whatever, whoever it is you're doing and pack a suitcase stat! You don't want to miss the window on that kind of offer!

Oma sent these bottle-cap bracelets… Continue

My outfit is way too cute for this

Several weeks ago, Ben and I attended a conference for web developers, even though I’m not a web developer myself. I'm a web designer, yes, but not a developer. They may sound similar but they’re not, and confusing those two roles would be like asking the hospital janitor [the one mopping your insides off the birthing room floor] whether, or not, your newborn is taking enough areola into her mouth when she latches on. Wrong man for the job, and… Continue

Twelve months of drivel and counting! All my mastheads are now up...you can all get back to the business of your lives again.

When we redesigned BuenoBaby earlier this spring, I had every intention to gather up all The Mastheads into one special place, which they could call their own. A place where they could stretch-out, scratch and watch the game. Sure, they may not share the same duties, and fulfill the same obligations, as their siblings, The Blog Posts, but that doesn’t mean I love them any less. Mastheads, you know I love you, even if I don’t say it…
