Guilt Free Bedtime Routine

Let me start out by saying that I'm in no way claiming to be super mom or that I have it all together because I don't.

I have however, found an idea that works for our bedtime routine. I thought it might be helpful for other parents who also struggle with the challenge of wanting to end your…

Missing Mom

There is a piece of me that is missing. Anyone who has lost their mom can identify with the feeling.

Mother's Day is always a day that stirs up the emotions even more because of her absence. I do have a diversion because I am a mom. My kids and husband do sweet things for me during the day to…

I tried the luge. You can too!

I love when plans work out for a spontaneous adventure. My friend was already coming to town, so I just offered her  the "choose your own adventure" option for her visit.  Try the luge, cross country skiing or attend an ice sculpture festival.  I was sooo excited that she wanted to try the luge too.  The weekend we went was the first time the track had been open all winter due to lack of snow.  This was a Christmas gift I've been impatiently waiting to use.

I had tried the wheeled…

Sweaty Elbows

The thing about hot yoga is that you will have sweat coming from body parts you didn't know could sweat.  Like your elbows.  I was a little intimidated by the idea of trying a 75 minute class where I would be sweating while twisting my body into a human pretzel.  I've taken regular yoga classes before.  I can  feel my heart rate go up and blood get pumping in the cooler temps of those classes.  I was a little uncertain if I might be passing out at some point during the class.

The…

Look Stupid!

Recently I joined my sister in law for a night of rock climbing.  I have gone several times before.  In fact our old youth room in our church had rock climbing walls.  My observation was that middle school students were always way more eager to climb than high schoolers.  I think the idea of looking stupid in front of their friends was a factor.

Our local gym also has a rock wall.  I only go on it every once in a while when my kids REALLY beg me.  Why?  Because it's located…

Adventures in Exercise

“I’m soooo sorry, Are you ok?,”- that’s what the old lady in my hydrorider class said to me after she accidently dropped her 55lb bike on my head as I was helping her get it into the water. I was fine but had to hold an icepack on the side of my face for the whole duration of the water “spin” class.

We had joined our gym a few years ago and it took me the longest time to even try a group class. I…

White and Nerdy

When I think of a segway, there are two images that come to mind. The music video to Weird Al Yankovic's Song "White and Nerdy" and the movie Mallcop with Kevin James.

I found out about a place where you could take indoor segway rides in an older mall…

Humility and Hope

I read an article this week titled "Christmas belongs to the poor" by Jeff Goins. One of the parts that really stood out for me ironically was from an old Frasier rerun he caught on TV. On that episode Frasier forgot his wallet and several homeless people joined together to pay for his bill. One of the men shared with him the true spirit of Christmas. He said,“The rest of the year belongs…

Uncomfortable Giving

This past summer I gave blood for the first time.  I had been putting off the experience because 1.) I don't like needles 2.) I strongly dislike being in any form of a medical environment.

I will admit I was enticed to have my first blood drawn by the cool swag gifts they were advertising that included a really cool American apparel t-shirt and yummy ice cream amongst other freebies.  I'm just being honest, I'm a sucker for free stuff.  I hated the finger pricking and the needle in my…

Stumbling Upon Creativity

My husband and I recently visited a holiday art show open house.  What made this experience inspiring and interesting was the family we met inside.  We found out about the event online and decided to check it out while we were already in the neighborhood.  My mom was an art teacher and artist so I have always enjoyed viewing the creative expressions of others.…

Unexpectant Holiday Cheer

Recently my family and I ate at a small corner restaurant and bar entirely covered in Christmas decor.  I found out about this little "Griswald delight" in an article from our local paper.  It immediately piqued my curiosity and I wanted to see for myself this creation of a collector whose accumilation started at the age of 4.  This labor of love begins after Halloween and stays up close to Valentine's Day. The article shared that the owner was 4 years old when his parents got divorced and…

Why Death has made me want to Live

The most awkward question a person can ask me is a simple, common question you ask someone you don’t know. “Do you have any brothers or sisters?” This can put the person I just met in an uncomfortable position because I have to say “yes, but he died toward the end of my 6th grade year, he had cerebral…
