I cannot be the only one…who was filled with dread after they glanced ahead at their child’s school calendar and saw the words “Kindergarten Field Trip to The Zoo” printed on the page. I immediately envisioned Sonny Boy, tears streaming down his chubby little six year old cheeks, crying in a little alcove outside the gorilla exhibit, lonely and lost at the zoo on his first field trip. My heart started racing and I knew I had to find out all the…

I cannot be the only one...who has mixed feelings about summer. Those days of carefree hours in the sun or staying up late in the warm evenings are no more. Now my summer consist of scrambling to create a schedule for my six year old that will keep him occupied, well supervised, and allow me to keep my already very part-time, part-time job. All of this combined makes it difficult to love summer as much as I used to.
The best choice for our little family of three is summer…Continue
I cannot be the only one…who has logged into their blog on any random day only to be blindsided by a less-than-friendly comment left by a reader. After reading the aggressively negative comment I find myself going through a range of emotions: First, I feel defensive, thinking to myself, “What did I do or say that caused such animosity,” secondly, I feel defeated, “Maybe I shouldn’t write anymore,” and lastly, I remind myself, “What I write is not for everyone…and obviously this…Continue

I cannot be the only one…who has found their child's first year of public Kindergarten trying at the best of times and down right frustrating the rest of the time. I’ve discussed my dismay at the entirely satisfactory report card (literally, all satisfactory marks) and the abundance of fundraising…

I love wine, but like many things that I proclaim to love I don't know all that much about it. Being a busy Mama I tend to find something I like, in this case a Merlot or Petite Sirah, and keep moving without taking the time to figure out exactly what it is I like about it. The web is a great place to research and gather information like little eggs in a wire basket, but I do enjoy a tangible item that I can hold, mark my place, and add notes if I feel so inspired, so to fulfill those…Continue

I cannot be the only one....who has been with a group of people when your child decides to show a less than polite side of their personality, leaving you laying down the law in a little tougher of fashion than usual, much to your chagrin. This is exactly what happened while we were on our big family Spring Breakin' vacation.…

There is one thing about drinking my beloved wine that causes me to pause, this particular nuance of sipping the garnet elixir can be slightly embarrassing when the neighbors are around to witness it, that is the huge crash of broken bottles when you take out the trash from a weekend (or a work week, I don't judge) of delightful wine drinking. That sound, the glass on glass shattering, that in your face reminder of just how much you have been partaking in, gave me the inspiration to start…Continue

I cannot be the only one...who has suffered through one day too many of their child's whining and began to wonder, how long is this whining phase going to last? Some of the things my six year old does seem to never change, perpetuating for what feels like forever. With this in mind, I decided to list the 5 changes Sonny Boy has been reluctant to make, and, in the name optimism, the changes that happened so fast, I missed them while they were happening. I am…Continue

It’s been awhile since I’ve had the chance to try any new wines, I have been searching my normal haunts (Trader Joe’s, Costco, and the Wal-Mart) and have been striking out in finding anything interesting that fits into my Middle-Class wine parameters (under ten bucks a bottle). Then, while on his own perfect brew mission, the Hubs returned from the Total Wine with something different, a Chilean Carmenere, and viola a new bottle to taste and share my thoughts on was…Continue

I cannot be the only one…who has been mid-argument only to stop and realize that the argument isn’t really about what the bickering is focused on, but rather something else all together. This was the case when the Hubs and I were arguing about the Sonny Boy’s upcoming T-ball schedule.
The Hubs wants Sonny Boy to play T-ball, he…

Over the weekend I read an interesting article in the Los Angeles Times about the future of wine and it's being called: The Miracle Machine. The proposed Miracle Machine is the blessed counter top product that would give the everyday wine lover the ability to turn water (and a few prepackaged ingredients) into wine.
Two big time wine guys (with lots of fancy wine related titles after their names), have been burning the midnight oil alongside the computer…Continue

I cannot be the only one…who completely understands the need for school fundraising, but hates it just the same. During our first year enrolled in a public school there has been a fundraiser of one sort or another happening every month, whether our children are being asked to peddle wares from a catalogue or participate in a hoola-hoop marathon, there has been no lack of fundraising activities.
This list consist of my top 5 reasons I loathe school…

If you are the one bringing home the literal bread in your household then you have seen them, the bright eyed, loom band wearing, merit badge earning Girl Scouts and Brownies outside your supermarket doors selling those cookies. Those cookies, the ones that can’t help but bring back my memories of selling those rectangular boxes while wearing knee high socks and a brown smock, offering my best seven year old sales pitch to unsuspecting supermarket customers, and as you know…Continue
I cannot be the only one....who is a Mama to a child that believes they are the boss in your house. Giving directions in place of taking directions has become a normal Sonny Boy'ism, whether it be when the dog needs to be walked or what I will serve for dinner, his two cents are thrown around freely. Sonny Boy's bossiness is especially in full swing when he's playing, or rather supervising, with me or his dad.
I've seen this bossy behavior in other homes as well, like the time I was…Continue

I cannot be the only one...whose child's behavior, or lack thereof, has an uncanny ability to make you lower yourself to a level of response that you are ashamed of later (or in my case, immediately). A child can bring out your childlike happy go-lucky side or a petty not-so-nice side that has been hibernating within your psyche since junior high school.
I have adapted to my surroundings as a Mama, my aptness at tuning out whining or just general six year old blabbering could…Continue
This past week’s wine drinking was interrupted by a very vile virus that attacked our home and took my boy and I out for most of the week. The inability to taste or smell anything for days on end kept me from uncorking and giving a new budget friendly bottle of wine a try in order to offer you a review. While wine-less and laid up under a pile of blankets and pillows, I was able to spend plenty of time perusing the web and reading blogs, which is where I stumbled upon the ingenuity of…

I cannot be the only one…who has been lucky enough to have made it six years without a cold or flu hitting all the members of our house at one time, that is until the last three days. Fortunately, this dastardly bug only knocked the Sonny Boy and I out, but it definitely makes for a trying experience when your child and yourself are both sick at the same time.…Continue

I cannot be the only one…who lives in a house ran by boys and who knows that, even with their brawny efforts, making Valentine’s Day anything other than a run-of-the-mill Friday will be up to me, and this includes the Sonny Boy’s valentine exchange at school.
I started asking the very indecisive Sonny Boy what type of valentine he would like…Continue

There is many a besotted couple that only wine on Valentines Day because of the pressure to make this day special. The rest of the three hundred and sixty-four days of the year they rely upon other sorts of spirits to provide that warm and fuzzy buzz, so when this holiday focused on Love rolls around every February, these once a year wine drinkers are left staring aimlessly at the wine aisle with no clue what wine to pair with their impending evening of…

I cannot be the only one…who has noticed their child has started to show signs of real independence; whether buttoning up their own shirt or washing their own hair in the tub, the small things that can be done without Mama, are being done without her.
This realization came to me the other day as I was attempting to complete a set of sit-ups (attempting is the key word there) while the Sonny Boy was scrubbing away in the shower unassisted. …
