Over the weekend I read an interesting article in the Los Angeles Times about the future of wine and it's being called: The Miracle Machine. The proposed Miracle Machine is the blessed counter top product that would give the everyday wine lover the ability to turn water (and a few prepackaged ingredients) into wine.
Two big time wine guys (with lots of fancy wine related titles after their names), have been burning the midnight oil alongside the computer…Continue

I cannot be the only one…who completely understands the need for school fundraising, but hates it just the same. During our first year enrolled in a public school there has been a fundraiser of one sort or another happening every month, whether our children are being asked to peddle wares from a catalogue or participate in a hoola-hoop marathon, there has been no lack of fundraising activities.
This list consist of my top 5 reasons I loathe school…

If you are the one bringing home the literal bread in your household then you have seen them, the bright eyed, loom band wearing, merit badge earning Girl Scouts and Brownies outside your supermarket doors selling those cookies. Those cookies, the ones that can’t help but bring back my memories of selling those rectangular boxes while wearing knee high socks and a brown smock, offering my best seven year old sales pitch to unsuspecting supermarket customers, and as you know…Continue
I cannot be the only one....who is a Mama to a child that believes they are the boss in your house. Giving directions in place of taking directions has become a normal Sonny Boy'ism, whether it be when the dog needs to be walked or what I will serve for dinner, his two cents are thrown around freely. Sonny Boy's bossiness is especially in full swing when he's playing, or rather supervising, with me or his dad.
I've seen this bossy behavior in other homes as well, like the time I was…Continue

I cannot be the only one...whose child's behavior, or lack thereof, has an uncanny ability to make you lower yourself to a level of response that you are ashamed of later (or in my case, immediately). A child can bring out your childlike happy go-lucky side or a petty not-so-nice side that has been hibernating within your psyche since junior high school.
I have adapted to my surroundings as a Mama, my aptness at tuning out whining or just general six year old blabbering could…Continue
This past week’s wine drinking was interrupted by a very vile virus that attacked our home and took my boy and I out for most of the week. The inability to taste or smell anything for days on end kept me from uncorking and giving a new budget friendly bottle of wine a try in order to offer you a review. While wine-less and laid up under a pile of blankets and pillows, I was able to spend plenty of time perusing the web and reading blogs, which is where I stumbled upon the ingenuity of…

I cannot be the only one…who has been lucky enough to have made it six years without a cold or flu hitting all the members of our house at one time, that is until the last three days. Fortunately, this dastardly bug only knocked the Sonny Boy and I out, but it definitely makes for a trying experience when your child and yourself are both sick at the same time.…Continue

I cannot be the only one…who lives in a house ran by boys and who knows that, even with their brawny efforts, making Valentine’s Day anything other than a run-of-the-mill Friday will be up to me, and this includes the Sonny Boy’s valentine exchange at school.
I started asking the very indecisive Sonny Boy what type of valentine he would like…Continue

There is many a besotted couple that only wine on Valentines Day because of the pressure to make this day special. The rest of the three hundred and sixty-four days of the year they rely upon other sorts of spirits to provide that warm and fuzzy buzz, so when this holiday focused on Love rolls around every February, these once a year wine drinkers are left staring aimlessly at the wine aisle with no clue what wine to pair with their impending evening of…

I cannot be the only one…who has noticed their child has started to show signs of real independence; whether buttoning up their own shirt or washing their own hair in the tub, the small things that can be done without Mama, are being done without her.
This realization came to me the other day as I was attempting to complete a set of sit-ups (attempting is the key word there) while the Sonny Boy was scrubbing away in the shower unassisted. …

I cannot be the only one…who has told their child something in the safe confines of their home, to only hear that comment repeated back to them by another child at the elementary school playground, leaving you wondering what else your child blabbers about while not in your care.
One of Sonny Boy’s little…

I used to consider myself a Cabernet Sauvignon type of girl. I loved the rich red hues, bold flavors, and the security of what to expect when ordering a glass of wine when out at a restaurant, but recently my taste have changed. Now I would say that I gravitate more towards Merlot and Pinot Noirs (which is unfortunate because of the Pinot's more expensive price tag), but I find these two reds range of taste more broad, and usually more enjoyable as well.…Continue

I cannot be the only one…who has spent the last several years of their lives in a perpetual state of begging their child to eat. Not just the typical, “Eat your vegetables,” but a pleading to eat something, anything, even the one part of the meal that you were sure your child would eat (like grapes or French fries). This has been a running theme in our house since the day the Sonny Boy was born (literally, read…Continue

I cannot be the only one…who attempts to find the balance between my child becoming a world-class liar and not stifling his imagination when he is sharing his latest exaggerated tale. Don’t misunderstand me, I have very little patience for the, “I didn’t do that,” type of fibs when I clearly saw Sonny Boy squeeze toothpaste all over the bathroom counter, I am speaking more of the, “John’s dad came to school juggling chainsaws, he dropped one on his foot and cut off his…

I cannot be the only one...who is amazed at their child's lack of ability to just simply get out the door in a timely fashion. Our school mornings have been hectic whirlwinds of velcro shoes, backpacks, and impromptu bicycle riding in the garage, adding up to a rushed and stressed out Mama that wants to throw in the towel. Just recently though, I've noticed that it seems like we might have finally ironed out the morning wrinkles, and have been arriving at school ON TIME.

I cannot be the only one…who finds them self disenchanted with their experience as a newbie Mama to public elementary school. I have a variety of different reasons for my less than enthused feelings, one is the fact that the principle has already called me at work, got me really worried, and then dismissed the whole point of the call as "nothing really," and now I can add the first report card to my kindergarten dismay.
The impression I am making with that…Continue

I cannot be the only one...who knows that the old saying, "when it rains, it pours," is as true today as it was when the first person uttered those words (probably between sobs and woeful wails). We spent this past week getting knocked around by strong winds, the Sonny Boy took a vacation, and the Hubs and I got to spend a little alone time together (sounds great, right? Well...keep reading for the plot twist).
Southern California is a beautiful place to live, we have…Continue

I cannot be the only one…who was shocked when my child moved past infancy and was still not sleeping through the night. This is something that no one warns you about when you're pregnant, most likely because they don’t want you to jump off a bridge by overwhelming you with the REAL truths about motherhood, but when the Sonny Boy continued to wake us way past three years of age, I figured I would have a lifetime of exhaustion to look forward to.…

I cannot be the only one…who has noticed that some Mamas thrive on schooling you on what is good parenting. There are those Moms who I think are just waiting for a good moment to drop some superior mothering wisdom on you and the others who are all about passing parenting judgment, either way this schooling happens to me quite often.
I narrowed down the…Continue

I cannot be the only one…whose weeks are so full of things to do that they fly by fast and whose weekends fly by even faster. Time has a horrible habit of getting away from me (notice how I don't take the blame for simply having bad time management skills) and before I know it it's Friday afternoon and I have so much yet to accomplish. This past week was no different then the rest and we had quite a few things going on per usual.
It was a gray and chilly day…Continue
