Vacation Redux

We were supposed to be in London this week. Actually, our vacation was to end tomorrow with a flight home, an eight-day vacation, without children, spending time with Colby exploring London, Edinburgh and the countryside of England. But you all see the news, read the

papers and have all seen the pictures of a pesky little volcano in Iceland that

continues to spew ash and lava into the air.yes""> Yep, that pesky little volcano ruined my blissful…

Spectically Speaking

I am getting older. How do I know this? I can’t read labels anymore. I can’t read
emails on my iPhone anymore. I
have to hold my book farther away from my lap and my arms are getting
tired. I need reading glasses.

Mean Girls

Mean girls are nothing new. We didn’t call them mean girls when I was in school but they existed. There have been a few in

my life. The girl that made my 5th

grade year pure torture, the girl in my class that was my friend one day, hated

me the next and was my BFF the day after that, and then there was my best

friend from kindergarten that somehow grew up to be better than me.…

What a Difference a Year Makes

A year ago, we lived in an upper, upper middle class neighborhood that required dodging golf carts as you drove home from the grocery store. Houses were really

big and really poorly built, but it just wasn’t a small, well built kind of

neighborhood. This was the type of

neighborhood that gave out large candy bars for Halloween, not the little

bite-size bars the rest of the world gives out.yes""> And most of the kids in the neighborhood…

Danger Lurks Beneath

Yankee Doodle is Going to London

Yes. This Yankee is heading to London. Tomorrow. Colby and I

usually take one vacation a year by ourselves.yes""> Normally we go to the Caribbean because this time of year I

am seriously in need of some sun and sand time.yes""> I crave a tan and the humidity and the little fruity rum

drinks delivered to me every hour on the hour.yes""> And seven days WITHOUT children.…

All Trussed Up

mso-ansi-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-language:EN-US"">As I posted in The Art of Aging Gracefully, I work

out five days a week. I’m not a

masochist, I am just an organized, goal oriented, stick to my routine type of

gal. If I don’t make it one day or

one week or for three weeks, I try very hard not to beat myself up. I just start over the next week.…

Ode to a Texan

If you follow me at all, you already know how I met my husband in Two Funerals, A Christening and a Wedding, and you know how he proposed in The Proposal, but to truly understand how my world works, you have
to understand my husband.

Failure of the System

I am sitting at my desk absolutely so angry that I could spit nails. I just read a series of articles

that reported the return of a 7 year-old Russian boy back to Russia. The adoptive mother, from Tennessee,

put him on an airplane bound for Moscow, alone, with a note saying she was

returning him. Seriously? SERIOUSLY?yes""> And…

Putting Pen to Paper

I’ve been writing a couple of blogs since the beginning of the year. I started writing my personal blog in order to get practice for my business blog. I’ve had so much fun writing for A

Mother’s Hood, that at times I have neglected Birth by Paperwork. I think this happened because it is

easier and I am CONSTANTLY coming up with ideas for A Mother’s Hood, where

Birth by Paperwork is…like work.

But with both blogs, I…

Watch It Wiggle...See It Jiggle

How many times in your life have you eaten jell-o? How many times have you fed it to your kids? I had it a lot when I was growing up. Every Thanksgiving, my
mom would grind up cranberries and oranges, crush walnuts and add a bunch of
sugar, then mix it all up with red jell-o.yes""> It didn’t matter what flavor it was as long as it was red.

Being the Mother of a RADish

I am the mother of a RADish. A RADish is a child with Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD). RAD is an attachment

disorder that results from a traumatic event in a child’s early life. Elle was adopted from Russia and spent

the first nine months of her life in an orphanage.yes""> Her birth mother delivered her, terminated her parental

rights, and left Elle at the hospital.

A month later, she made her…

Just Add Water

I recently had a rather humiliating experience that I finally decided to share with the world…in hopes I can make you laugh today. Last week my husband was
out of town and I was home alone with the girls.yes""> Usually this stresses me out, but not this time. I was quite calm and was having fun with
my daughters.

Detour from the Traditional

As I sit on my deck enjoying the warm and beautiful Easter sunshine, I have a confession to make. I don’t really like Easter.

It is not one of my favorite holidays.yes""> Growing up we always had Easter baskets and I remember getting

a new dress every year, dressing up in a pair of patent leather Mary Jane’s

with frilly white socks and going to church.…

Ode to the McDonald's Hamburger

I am a child of the 60’s and I admit that I love McDonald’s hamburgers. Not the cheeseburger, not the Quarter Pounder, not the Big Mac…but a simple hamburger. I also admit that I have eaten at

McDonald’s all over the world and there is some comfort in walking into the

golden arches and knowing that the hamburger will taste the same in Moscow as

in Wichita.

When Your BFF Is a Psychic

One of my best friends is psychic. Yep, you read me right, a bona fide, intuitive, medium kind of ghost whisperer. Brenda and I

met in kindergarten and were friends all the way through high school. We lost touch after graduation and I

hadn’t seen nor heard from her in 26 years.yes""> I had reconnected with friends from high school and she was

one of them. We had emailed a

couple of times, but out of the blue she called…
