When I was a pimply, gauche teenager, I loved reading Tiger Beat. In those days, the faces gracing the cover and every page in between was Scott Baio, Shaun Cassidy and Leif Garrett…Oh My. I was convinced that if Shaun Cassidy
really had the chance to meet me, he would…

I have always been worried about home security, not so much when I’m not at home, but more when we are all home and it is the dead of night. I worry about burglars, bad guys and meth heads breaking into our
house. We have an alarm system that
religiously gets set every night before we go to bed…and we have a dog…a dog
that has a strong heritage of German watch dog in him.

I am an open-minded person and accepting of all things. I don’t judge people for their beliefs in religion, child rearing or interior decorating tastes. Partly, because I don’t want to be judged, but mainly because I just don’t care whether they have a baby blue
couch sitting on a pale pink carpet with a ducky border in their living room.

I love spas. I love facials and massages and manicures and pedicures. I love the Zen feeling you get when you walk into a spa and are handed a cool glass of water with the floating lemon
slices. The calming harp music
always makes me more aware that I need less stress in my life and more

I am a lawyer…kind of. In the interest of full disclosure, I must admit I have never practiced. Not a day. It’s not because I couldn’t find a
job…I didn’t even look. It’s not
because I didn’t get good grades…United Missouri Bank (UMB) thought I had a
promising career in estate planning.
It’s because I wanted to be a lawyer…but I didn’t want to be a lawyer.…

When I was growing up, my Dad had a rule in our house, when you move away after college; you have to live outside a 500-mile radius of home. OK…don’t ask, but I will say
that when I eventually did move away from home, I did manage to move just
outside the 500-mile radius. The
funny thing was, as soon as I did, Daddy asked me when I was going to move
home. So much for house rules.

My daughter has Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD). She has it because she spent the first nine months of her life in a Russian orphanage.yes""> It wasn’t caused by anything she did, she just didn’t get the love, attachment and bonding that she needed as an infant. And then I adopted her. Unfortunately, as a grieving widow, I
really didn’t have the emotional surplus to give to her, to help her bond and
rebuild her broken brain.…

I have never had a dog before. Until the scrawniest, scraggliest, mutt showed up on our doorstep right before Thanksgiving.
Evidently, he followed Elle home one afternoon and refused to leave our
front porch. I told Elle to leave
him alone and he would leave. But
all evening he sat in front of our door and wouldn’t leave. Every time we would tiptoe to the door
and look through the glass, the saddest brown eyes…

Mary, Mary quite contrary
How does your garden grow?
With crooked rows
And broken hoes
And alphabetized herbs refusing to show.

It is the Friday before Mother’s Day and I am reflecting on all that makes me a mom, especially a mother of internationally adopted daughters. I am a typical mother,
I make sure my kids are well fed, with as little sugar and processed food on
the table as I can manage…although I tend to lose the candy game with their
Dad. I make sure they have clean
clothes and that they started out matching when I bought them…not always
successful on the fashion…

Colby and I are beach people. It’s one of the things I love about him. The concept of lying on a beach all day reading book after book is never a hard sell when it comes to vacation
time. The only thing we differ on
is the location of our beach chairs…I want mine in the sun and he wants his in
the shade…but I can work with that.

I was sitting on my beach chair relaxing/recharging when I saw a crab poke his head out of his hidey-hole.yes""> As I watched, he snuck out of his hole, scurried down the beach, then changed direction and scurried back down his hole. He did this a couple of times and I was
intrigued. At this point, I wanted
to take a close up photo of him, so I grabbed my camera and belly crawled
towards his hole in order to get a close up picture of “Clevis”…
