The house is still. The only noise I hear is the hum of the refrigerator. I’m basking in the quiet and trying to make it last as long as I can. Because…today is the last day of school. A day I’ve been dreading more than a gynecological visit or a root canal.

The spring is progressing nicely. We have managed to dodge the Toto-like weather, and my garden is planted and starting to grow. The mixture of rain, humidity, and sunshine has contributed to my green thumb abilities.
Everything has come up except for the spinach and Swiss chard. Well, a singular spinach plant has sprouted. One. I never had any luck last year, so I’m not holding out much hope for this year. I’m not really sure if the Swiss chard is up yet, because I’ve never…Continue

It has been typical Kansas weather around here lately. One day it is 40° and the next it might be 90°. In between the 40° and the 90°, there is a whole lot of nasty storms. As the humidity starts to rise, the thunderheads start towering to the west, and the storm warnings show up on the television screen, it is usually a safe bet that it’s not going to be a very safe night.

We bought our house two years ago, so this is the third summer we will be living on our 20 little acres in the country. Like moving to every other house we’ve bought, it takes time to settle in and get things done.
First there was the moving in part, then the decorating, then dealing with the placement of the Christmas tree, and recently we just built a barn. The landscaping around the house is about six years old and it is starting to get that “matured” look. You know, that look…Continue

I love meatloaf. My family loves meatloaf. Everyone loves meatloaf, and I am sure all of you have your own variation of meatloaf with hamburger, onions, and ketchup. I never cared much for it when I was a child, but as a cook, I love being able to throw everything in a big bowl and get my hands dirty…like a little kid.
I also love a well-manicured hand. I prefer wearing color on my fingernails rather than a neutral French manicure. In the past, I have tried everything to get a…Continue

I have a special place in my heart for my dog, Huey P. Long. He is the first dog I’ve ever had, and when he showed up on our doorstep, malnourished and mangy, there was no way I could call animal control. I just couldn’t.
Huey must have a special place in his heart for Elliott and I because there is no doubt he would die for us. He is extremely protective of us, while only merely tolerating Hunter and Colby. Over the 18 months we’ve had him, he has warmed up to Colby and Hunter,…Continue

One precociously cute 6 year old. She is potty trained, capable of doing her own laundry, but prone to temper tantrums. A budding fashionista, will set the table after five reminders. However, she likes to use projectile vomiting as a weapon. Best offer accepted.

Colby recently bought a new pickup truck. Just so you know, this make the third pickup truck he owns. Don’t ask me to explain why…I think it is a Texas thing. When he bought the new truck, he had the family in mind. Well, he mainly had me in mind. Besides being more comfortable to take on long road trips, I could easily drive it when it snowed and when I had things to haul.

Yesterday was Mother’s Day, a day filled with homemade cards, a bouquet of pink and yellow flowers, and beef brisket. It was a beautiful and unseasonably warm day spent with my family and my mother.Continue

Yesterday was one of those days I plunked my bottom down on the couch and watched television until my eyes glazed over. The six hours of gardening had left me with little energy to do much of anything else. As I was channel surfing, looking for a program to take a nap to, I came across TLC: Extreme Couponing. I had seen the trailers for the program, but I didn’t really have much of an interest watching women clip…Continue

The day has finally arrived I have been anticipating for eight months. Planting day! The planning started in February when I ordered sweet corn, and every time I drive in the driveway, I wistfully look at the barren, brown patch of dirt counting the days until spring. A few weeks ago, Colby tilled my garden with his tractor and expanded it by 50%.

It always seems to start with a phone call.
This time the call came during dinner preparation, a pot roast simmering in the oven with a pile of carrots and potatoes to peel. As the phone rang, I glanced distractedly at the caller ID. I didn’t want to answer. I didn’t want to answer because I had carrot juice on my hands. I didn’t want to answer because I knew who was calling.
