Don’t Get Caught With Your Pants Down – Being Ready for an Emergency

Do you know when the best time is to plan for an emergency or a crisis?

When you’re not in the middle of one, that’s when.

Would you know what to do if a major crisis hit your home or your town? And by major I mean “Holy  Mother Mary of God - batten down the hatches” major – not “they’re calling for an inch of…

10 Things You Don’t Say to the Parents of Daughters

When you’re a parent, you get lots of advice.  And if you know me, you know that I hate unsolicited advice. I hated it when I was single and people told me how to find a husband. I hated it when I was pregnant and people told me how I should take care of myself. I hated it when my kids were small and people told me how to discipline them. Unless I walk up to…

Bloggers, Bullies and Organic Food

What do bloggers, bullies and organic food have to do with each other?

I thought you’d never ask.

I was living under a rock this weekend because I missed the apparent firework explosion on Twitter  aimed at KFC and their Blogger outreach. It came up on my radar today…

Blogging Basics: Which Commenting Platform is the Best

Which Commenting Platform is the Best?

Ask five bloggers which commenting system they use on their site and you will probably get five different answers.  There are many, including but not limited to:

  • WordPress
  • Livefyre
  • CommentLuv
  • Disqus

But which one is the best?…

Social Media Common Sense for Bloggers

As many know, I made a personal commitment to dig back into my personal blog in 2012 and I’m  proud to say that, in my opinion, I’ve done a great job.

What many of you may not know is that in my 9-5 life, I own a company thatspecializes in digital and social media marketing. Sometimes it’s…

Teaching Kids About Differences Using Eggs

I thought today was a fitting day to tell the story about one of my favorite school events. When Mackenzie was in the 2nd grade, her school held an event to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. They used  this event to show the kids that no matter how different we may be on the outside, on the inside we’re all the same.

That in itself is very nice, but…

Hey Society – Get Your Opinions Off My Body

Did you see this article? I saw it late last night and LOVED it. Even posted it to my Facebook page. In the spread, size 12 model Katya Zharkova poses nude next to a “straight size” model to show the differences between them.

I loved it… thought it was a beautiful spread, truer words were…

The Retail Sexualization of Teens

If you didn’t see this post by fellow blogger Vinobaby’s Voice, you need to read it (after you read this,  of course). It’s regarding the high school senior who is raising all sorts of chaos because her school’s yearbook staff rejected the girl’s senior photo submission. Once you see the pictures, I’m sure you’ll understand why they rejected them. Yes, It’s Too Sexy…

Teens, Tweens and Finances

We forewarned our girls that this Christmas was not going to be a big one.  The Rooster had changed jobs halfway thru the year and my business was slower than last year. Even if that hadn’t been the case, when we saw the 13 YOs “list” it made us do a double take and realized that these kids needed a severe reality check. I’ve made the comment many times that there is NOT an M.D. behind my name. Sorry for the harsh truth kids, but we are not rolling in the dough.

We “gently” advised…

Kids Who Sell Stuff… And People Who Don’t Buy

I have 3 kids which means in our time and like everyone else, we’ve sold a lot of crap. We’ve sold cookie dough, pizza making kits, wrapping paper, God awful things they considered “gifts”, magazine subscriptions and of course, Girl Scout cookies.  We are VERY lucky that the elementary school we’re at now doesn’t participate in item sales – they just ask us for pledges and donations at the beginning of the year. And then nickel and dime us the rest of the year, but that’s a different…

Hope in Heels – A Gala To Benefit Dress for Success of Winston-Salem

I was honored when a couple of my favorite local bloggers reached out to me this Fall and asked if I wanted to help them organize a GALA! for our local Dress for Success. A ball?! Last time I got that  gussied up was for my wedding in Vegas! So now I get the chance to get the…

The Problem With Kids

Is unfortunately, usually, their parents.

One of the things that I noticed pretty quickly when we moved back to this area is that in the South people tend to live by the rule of "do as I say, not as I do" – especially when it comes to RSVPs.  I have

been bitten on more than one occassion by parents who didn't RSVP for birthday parties. I don't mean responding…

Social Media, Parenting and (Lack of) Common Sense

I was running around Facebook, as I frequently do throughout the day, when I came across a business page running a contest. Nothing odd there, right? Lots of businesses run contests and incentives to increase their traffic and number of “likes”.

Except this one was different. This Facebook page was for a medical practice that caters  to…

They Just Pop Out That Way

Watching three girls go from womb to now, I have had the privilege of learning/realizing that yes indeed, some things do just come to us girls naturally. It's like a code of honor that Mother Nature plants in

their heads while they're being created. Here are a few that I find

worthy of comment...

You must never, ever go to the bathroom alone. What…

What *I* would teach at Cotillion

I returned from a conference recently and was reminded of the moment back in May where I (apparently) lost my senses and agreed to let my 12

year old attend Cotillion classes. Truth be told, I think they

were having a hard time filling the class, so they started calling down

the list. Our last name starts with "D".. we were doomed (no pun

intended).
Anyhow.. there it sat on my desk.. almost as complete as

a wedding invitation except this outfit would be a…
