I don't Know Where I've Been

Goodness Gracious I just climbed out from under my rock and realised I have not updated this since people stopped clapping and Tinkerbell died... You would not believe that I'd been abducted by aliens. But I'm sorry you'll just have to take my word for it..

I am absolutely consumed with responding to fanmail, waiting for the onshore winds, just generally being an embarrassment to my kids, my day is filled with fluorescent light from 3am to well after sun-down. I am avoiding…

All about My Mother: How Touch Helps Us Take Risks

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=all-about-my-motherStrong emotional bonds between mothers and infants increase children’s willingness to explore the world—an effect that has been observed across the animal kingdom, in people, monkeys and even spiders. The more secure we are in our attachment to Mom, the more likely we are to try new things and take risks. Now researchers are discovering that this… Continue

Breast-Feeding: Not Just for Women?

http://healthland.time.com/2010/10/08/breastfeeding-not-just-for-women/#more-11922

I grew up hearing from my dad that a woman can do anything a man can do. Now, as a parent, I try to impart that same wisdom to my own two girls. Still, biologically, there are some things gals can do that guys can't — breast-feed, for one.… Continue

The Preacher and the Frog Princess

An old country preacher was fishing one afternoon when he noticed a frog sitting next to him. The frog said, “Mister, I’ve had a spell cast on me. If you’ll kiss me, I’ll turn into a beautiful princess and I’ll make you happy for the rest of your life.”

The old preacher smiled, picked up the frog, and put it in his pocket. After a while, he looked into his pocket to see how the frog was doing.

The frog said again, “Mister, I’ve had a spell cast on me. If you’ll kiss me,… Continue

Decorate with homemade paper pumpkins

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/homegarden/2013041952_kidcrafts05.htmlYou can almost smell fall in the air.

All of a sudden, it seems as if the air is crisper, the leaves on the sugar maples are turning orange and pumpkins have popped up in crates at roadside vegetable stands and local grocery stores.

It's my favorite time of year when this part of the Earth gets… Continue

Seasonal Crafts: Apple Heads

The Native American art of making apple heads is both easy and fun. Follow these instructions for a creative fall craft.

Choose a big apple and start by peeling it.

Then, with a sharp knife, form the nose, make eye sockets, and cut a line for the mouth.

Carve around the mouth to accentuate the cheeks, and make some lines around the eyes and on the forehead.

Soak the head in lemon juice for about 1/2 hour (so it doesn't turn brown) before hanging it to… Continue

The Fall

ddmacc502.wordpress.comhttp://ddmacc502.wordpress.com Image via Wikipedia

The fall is my most favorite time of the year. The crisp breeze in the morning and fresh air is reminiscent of my hometown in Illinois. I miss all the autumn colors here in the deep south but I still love this time of year.

I remember looking out at the fields of pumpkin as far as the eye could see. The corn being harvested and sounds of crows all… Continue

You Don't Believe All That Stuff, Do You?

The lady replied, "Of course I do. It's the Bible."

He said, "Well, what about that guy that was swallowed by that whale?"

She replied, "Oh, Jonah. Yes, I believe that. It's in the Bible."

He asked, "Well, how do you suppose he survived all that time inside the whale?"

The lady said, "Well, I don't really know. I guess when I get to heaven, I will ask him."

"What if he isn't in heaven?" the man… Continue

Women Apologize More Frequently Than Men Do

Research confirms that women tend to apologize much more frequently than men do, but there's a curious twist as to why this is the case. Christie Nicholson reports

September 25, 2010 Who do you think apologizes more often, men or women?

I think a lot of us might answer: Women. And as a Canadian woman I probably apologize more than anyone else.

Interestingly though, recent research revealed a curious twist for why women tend to apologize… Continue

Straighten Those Teeth? Braces For The Young Crowd

http://n.pr/bOLDGJSeptember 27, 2010

If you walk the halls of an elementary school, you're likely to see lots of "metal-mouths." Many parents are now opting for early orthodontic treatment, and the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist for an evaluation no later than the age of seven. But research shows there are often advantages to deferring treatment

"There's been a number of studies that have shown… Continue
