Extended Breastfeeding Past the Toddler Age

Today is quite a special day — I have been breastfeeding my son for 3 years, 3 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days. Yay for extended breastfeeding!

When I started breastfeeding, I didn’t have a goal in mind of how long I wanted to do it. I had such breastfeeding problems during the first two weeks with sore nipples, all I was concerned with was learning how to breastfeed correctly so it would stop hurting so much. Thinking about how long I was going to do it was furthest from my mind, all I… Continue

Motherhood: Mismatched Socks and Reheating Coffee

Not Me! Monday

I did not wear a white and a black woolen sock to New York City the other day. Uh, yes I did. I was invited by Hasbro to a blogger event before they officially opened their doors for the New York Toy Fair (look out for the extensive blog post on that). I could only find one of each, it was 6 in the morning when I got dressed, and nobody was going to notice anyway. I could have worn other socks -- I have plenty -- but these are my… Continue

If you could have a drug-free birth, would you want it?

Are you pregnant and want a natural birth? Then you'll want to read this!

My next New York City Moms blog post is up and running! It’s called Natural Birth, Duggar Style. This article is generate some interesting comments (and heated discussion!).

What do you think, do you feel — like me — that more women could achieve a natural birth if they had educated themselves more about how the hospital is set up to push you into C-sections and believed more strongly in their ability to… Continue

Playing With Trains at Midnight

Hmm, time for Not Me! Monday. You want honesty? You got it! My next New York City Moms blog article was not overdue. I finally finished it this morning and it’s in the cue. I’ll let you know when it gets published. It’s called “Natural Birth, Duggar Style.” I do not still owe someone a book review, have to watch a video about breastfeeding and write the review, and manage 1781…

Our New Vegetarian, Kinder Diet -- Week 1

It’s been about a week that we dramatically changed things here in the Bleasdale kitchen. After reading Alicia Silverstone’s The Kind Diet and watching the movie Food Inc., my husband decided that he wants to radically change his eating habits to hopefully get rid of the pain he has been in for months.

Eliminated meat:

I went to the grocery…

Blue Cupcakes and Collard Greens

...After we stopped in town to get the mail, my sister-in-law and three of her kids came over for the afternoon. Don and Maria wanted to watch the movie “Food Inc." I decided to entertain the kids with making cupcakes.

I had just bought this muffin-making kit for a dollar on sale yesterday, thinking it would come in handy one day. Reading the ingredients made me shudder . . . Let’s just say making these was more fun than eating them — not even the kids ate much of… Continue

Blogging Mom Shellie Loses Little Son to Drowning Accident

A few days ago, a little boy died. He wasn’t even three years old, and apparently he died by drowning in the family’s pool, right in front of his mother’s eyes.

I am sick to my stomach about this. I don’t know this family, I don’t know the whole story, but as a mother I can’t even fathom what his mother must be going through right now. Her life will never be the same. Instead of judging her or this tragedy in any way, I am sending only compassionate thoughts her way.

I… Continue

Cute Video of Landon Playing Guitar and Singing to his Teddy Bear

My first video on my blog, Dagmar's momsense -- I’m exited! This is one of my favorite videos I have shot of Landon so far. It was shot in our old home.

He is about 2 1/2 years old here and is serenading his teddy bear, Manhattan. Since Landon has always been very musical and loves guitars, Don bought him this little ukulele. He is pretty talented, don’t you think? I love how he keeps singing and singing; it’s so cute :)

Gosh, do I miss those curls . . . They never came… Continue

First Snow and the Perfect Gift

A few days ago we woke up to a few inches of snow! I got some nice pictures of Landon enjoying it. Now that he is three he seemed to be even more exited about the first snow of the season...

Need the perfect holiday gift for a small business owner, entrepreneur, artist, writer, musician, film maker, or environmental and social activist who wants to get more customers, generate more revenues, and build a following? Then consider getting David Mathison’s Be The Media! He now travels… Continue

Are Mothers Who Choose Not to Breastfeed Selfish?

While pregnant or even before, every woman inevitably thinks about the topic of breastfeeding. Will I breastfeed my baby? For how long? I think most women have the best intentions and try to breastfeed and then stop after different periods of time – they might breastfeed a week, they make it through the rough first few weeks and go on to nurse for a few months or a year, and then there are the extended breastfeeding moms like me.

Breastfeeding was one of the things I most looked… Continue

Do You Want to Make a Living with Your Blogging, Writing, Craft, or Music? You Can!

I am an avid Twitter user -- left to my own devices, I would tweet all day. I like to connect with many other people, mostly moms, who are interested in the same topics: natural birth, breastfeeding, attachment parenting, green and frugal living, homeopathy, and using social media. I also love to provide my followers (2550+) with valuable retweets they might benefit from.

I think social media is amazing in that it allows anyone with a message to get it out to many people — without it… Continue

“Be The Media” And Make a Living Doing What You Love!

Are you an entrepreneur, artist, blogger, musician, or writer who wants to make a decent living? You can! I already blogged about how I heard David Mathison speak about using social media to market what you are passionate about and to use social media to your advantage. His book, Be The Media, goes into much detail about how you only need 1000 true fans to make a decent living. That seems entirely doable!

Be The Media is one of those book you want all of your family and… Continue

I Can't Decide -- Do I want Another Child?

Today, I found myself pondering again what I have thought about a few times since Landon was born: do I want another child? Landon was only months old when family members and friends started to ask about the second child, and a lot of my mom friends seem to be having the second child now or are pregnant or working towards it. Not us. Thankfully, I don’t have a huge urge to have another one, although I loved being pregnant and had such a wonderful drug-free birth experience. I say thankfully… Continue

We Attended the World Breastfeeding Challenge

When I heard about the World Breastfeeding Challenge, scheduled for October 3, I immediately knew I wanted to go. I’m up for a challenge! All over the world mothers would unite and latch on their children at the same time — what a great idea to promote breastfeeding! So Landon and I drove to the White Plains, New York, location, which was Full Circle Family Care. I told him there would be a lot of babies, and since he loves babies, he was all exited.

I was proudly sporting my “Yes,… Continue

Dooce Inspired: The Case of Our Deranged Bed

I am reading Heather Armstrong’s (better known as dooce.com to millions who read her personal blog) book It Sucked and Then I Cried. It’s insightful, self-deprecating and hilarious, as I expected — I love her blog. So I thought I’ll post a dooce-ish entry inspired by Heather’s writing:

So we finally set up our bed tonight. We moved into this house about a month ago, and we still were sleeping on just the box spring and mattress. (Well, mostly Don sleeps in the bed and I… Continue

I Spoke to “The Doctors” — The Bachelor Dr. Travis Stork & Dr. James Sears

I was invited by Rolemommy.com and CBS Television to participate in a conference call with Dr. Travis Stork (remember him from “The Bachelor”?) and pediatrician Dr. James “Jim” Sears today (what an honors since his The Baby Book and his parent’s The Breastfeeding Book and The Attachment Parenting Book are some of my absolute favorite!). Dr. Sears and Dr. Stork are part of a team of four doctors discussing medicine and health in a relatable fashion five days a week on CBS’s “The Doctors.” I was… Continue

How a Little Boy Named Stellan Made Me a Better Mother

I learned about Jennifer and Stellan a few days ago, and that sweet little boy has been on my mind since then. Jennifer’s beautiful blog, My Charming Kids, is actually one of the first mom blogs I ever came across seven months ago when I started my blog, but I hadn’t checked in until a tweet by another mom caught my attention. Stellan, one of four, is her nine-month-old adorable little boy who has heart failure, and Jennifer blogs about their difficult and heart-breaking journey every day. More… Continue

How Long Did You Breastfeed? Why Did You Stop?

After my wonderful experience with it, I have become passionate about breastfeeding and would like to encourage as many moms as possible to start and continue to breastfeed — that is a major reason why I started my blog, DagmarBleasdale.com. No matter how long you choose to breastfeed — one week or four years — I want to be a resource and cheerleader for all new mothers because I believe most women can nurse their child with the… Continue

My Baby’s First Haircut — Why I’m Still Crying

I finally gave in — it was time for Landon’s first haircut. After not being able to make up my mind about cutting off his beautiful little curls for the longest time, I had thought of making that trip to the hair salon in recent weeks. And when I received a half-off coupon in the mail from Snip-its, the kid’s place I wanted to take him to anyway because I wanted him to have a special, positive experience the first time, my frugal self took that as a sign.… Continue
